5 Tips to Stop Being So Hard on Yourself

Brava, Amanda! I’m sure this post will speak to many…

UPDATE: In fact, I’ve now heard from several men who affirm that Amanda’s experiences and tips are in no way limited to “American women” but rather, quite universal to the human experience. I suspected as much, but thanks for your comments!

This is timely. I have this creative endeavor that is time-consuming, “fiddly” and unusual enough that people are awed, but all I see is flawed. Hey, that rhymes… 🙂 For some reason I always seem to choose a hobby that feeds my perfectionism and gives it all kinds of “ammo” with which to sabotage me. It got to the point where I put all the supplies & stuff away for years. Every spring I would look over my past work and think, about trying it again. Even now, taking some of the essential supplies out of storage and trying to motivate myself to “just do it, dammit!” I hear the inner critic roaring to life like a flame from hot ashes.

I’m going to just have to print off that pithy quote: “Perfectionism is Self-Abuse of the Highest Order.” and stick it where I can see it.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Mystery schools teach to use the words banish, vanquish and reject. So anytime you have negative or fearful thoughts use these words. Doesn’t matter if you think them or say them out loud. ” I banish that thought”, “I vanquish that thought”, or “I reject that thought”. It’s taught that these are key words for the subconscious. Takes a little practice but it works.
