The Great Turning Film: Joanna Macy on Uncertainty

Another message from my she-ro, Joanna Macy:

For those with more time, there’s also this talk, posted by Naropa University last year … Joanna Macy speaking about “The Courage to See, the Power to Choose”:

Ten of Swords

Sometimes I dream of Tarot Cards, and this past week as far as Tarot Dreams go, I’ve seen nothing but the Ten of Swords. This card represents one of the most ambivalent messages in the deck, quite appropriate for our times. Tarot artist Robin Wood’s glossary entry for the Ten of Swords reads:

TEN –No, it is that bad!
Misfortune, ruin, defeat, loss, failure, pain, desolation beyond tears. Alternatively, evils or misfortunes which are over.

Reversed
Evil overthrown, courage, success, recovery, turning toward higher sources.”

For the record, I keep seeing the card upright, not reversed. Since Robin Wood’s cards are copyrighted, here’s a Rider-Waite-Smith version of the card:

We determine the meaning of this paradoxical card by exploring the context in which it appears. In terms of world events, we’ve got “A Tale of Two Cities” playing out all over the place: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times …”. We’ve also got enormous amounts of Cognitive Dissonance plaguing a species — especially in the US — who has mostly lost the ability to discern anything beyond the projected screen. Even the rare people who see beyond one or two screens usually stop there, patting themselves on the back for their intelligence and insight. For some bizarre reason, it doesn’t occur to people who’ve busted through one reality that the “opposite” they’ve embraced may be exactly the same in a mirror image, or even more restrictive and insidious. Once people burst through a reality, instead of having the presence of screens confirmed, they simply assume that the screens they’ve seen beyond are the only two screens in existence. No amount of pointing out screens and projectors/projections seems to convince them that they’ve only just begun the journey.

I write a lot about the Middle Way, a path that recognizes good within bad, light within dark, positive within negative, because the temptation to label things black and white traps so many people into the same old, same old with a different mask. People see a good side of someone they want to believe in and use that photograph or speech as “proof” that all their detractors have zero merit; this is the new sacrificial lamb so s/he must be telling the truth; no animal or baby would respond to an “evil” person this way; look, so and so loves his children, ergo, he must be on our side. Any information to the contrary — especially if it comes from a news outlet or government people have been told lies (hint: they all do at some point) — is met with Cognitive Dissonance. It does not compute, because these conflicting “facts” can’t possibly go together.

Oh, no? How many of you have ever dated a narcissist or psychopath? How many of you have simply had some bad luck in love in which you can’t really say the person was crazy, but he or she did break your heart with false promises s/he failed to deliver? If that person had zero attractive qualities and no love in their heart, then why did you ever fall in love with them in the first place? You might wonder in retrospect, but at the time, you saw the good without the bad. Or, maybe you saw the good and the bad, but chose to ignore your Spidey Senses, because you really, really wanted to believe the good.

Guess what? That happens on the political stage, as well. People fall in love with the leaders projected on various screens, just as much as they fall in love with characters in romantic comedies or television shows. Projections don’t equal off screen or behind the scenes reality. We live in a world with layers and layers of obfuscation, projection, and Glamour (as in the magickal term for creating a false, glittering “reality”). We live in a genetically and socially engineered world that does everything in its power to keep people so busy, so distracted, so ashamed, so poisoned, narcissistic, addicted and befuddled that they will never move beyond the first few screens.

Inbred narcissism, moral relativism (intentional confusion of one’s inner compass) and one-dimensional or at most two-dimensional awareness ensures that even those who move beyond those first few screens will be marginalized, attacked by those who worship the State, religion or status-quo, and/or deemed insane. Because the programming runs so deep, if people notice an “alternative” news source or politician getting “persecuted” or “maligned,” they automatically accept this as “proof” that this “alternative” really is “different,” not even realizing how thoroughly costumed, cast and plotted this mini series is. Many of the characters don’t even realize they’re actors, which allows them to project “sincerity” even if they’re playing a role. In a world of Reality TV, Facebook, Twitter, and online avatars, few people would recognize reality if it slapped them in the face.

And it does. Those creating the dystopia on this planet need our consent to continue. We live in a Free Will Universe. The reason it doesn’t feel that way is because those running the projections operate according to the letter of that law rather than the spirit of the law. They manufacture consent by controlling not just the mainstream media, but also the education systems, the medical system, and religions, infiltrating the “opposites” of these, as well.

As Vladimir Lenin said, “The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves.” Self proclaimed “awakened” people assume that because they see through one layer of reality and find some good qualities in the opposite of that reality, that they have now seen “the new solution” or “the real truth,” but they’re really just trying to find something, someone, anything, anyone who will take away their personal power again. Personal power’s like a hot potato. It requires responsibility for choices, and few people feel comfortable accepting that responsibility moment by moment for the rest of eternity. They’d rather make one more choice — the “right choice” — and outsource the tedious process of discernment, choosing and responsibility.

In private correspondence with a friend the other day, I described it thus:

…this desire to worship a guru instead of have them as more of a teacher and activator runs very strong with so many people. It’s really not that different from any pedestal situation — almost like our culture has a combo of collective borderline and narcissistic personality disorders. To not have those disorders (and the borderline IS that whole no boundaries, merging, I don’t know where you end or I begin paradigm) makes you a freak in their eyes. Or a stick in the mud. Or just … out of place.

Fortunately, more and more people are stepping out of that whole “take my power, please take my power, ohhh, my power’s too heavy for me, please take it from me, along with all responsibility for my choices and my energy, ahhh, we’re all one, now!” vibe that at least some people truly are looking for and capable of having a real relationship. When you find one of those, you will just relax into the relationship and that oneness will happen in a healthy way … where you blend but also maintain individuation.

So what does all this have to do with the Ten of Swords?

I will use America as an example, but if you live elsewhere, check your own locale, government and/or relationships for similar patterns:

(from correspondence with the same friend, regarding the suspicious disarming of American border patrol agents):

My friend: “I don’t get it, they’re buying AR-15’s for the USDA agent’s but may disarm the border patrol, easier for ISIS (Mosad) terrorists to get accross and make a lovely curtain call of 9/11?”

Me: Well, if it’s not obvious yet, then I don’t know when people are going to get it. As you said, AR-15’s to USDA, plus IRS, Social Security Administration, etc. Wide open border. Fast and Furious gun smuggling. Disarming border patrol. Disarming all registered gun holders, but not checking the gangs coming across the border. Amnesty for everyone, including the tens of thousands of convicted rapists and murderers they released from jail. Top 5 Islamic terrorists who’ve vocalized a desire to destroy the US traded for a traitor soldier who converted to Islam and possibly committed to Jihad. Sending our police departments for training in Israel “we will destroy Gaza” and “it’s OK to murder non-Jews.” Hundreds of generals discharged. Vets labeled with PTSD so they can’t hold guns. The Muslim Brotherhood are not considered terrorists anymore, but the Founding Fathers, people who organic garden, believe in the Constitution, and want to make the world a better place are….

Seriously, do we need blood in the streets for people to get it? Or even then will they think it’s something else? The cognitive dissonance in this country is deafening. At least you can’t confiscate magick. Pesky thing, those skills.

And then there is THIS….

http://viewsandpreviews.com/sacking-of-commanding-generals-prelude-to-surrender-or-armageddon/

My Friend: well researched, btw, this is by far the most senior commander’s ever to be sacked in US history, it’s not even close.

On that note, Ken outdid himself, pull up a chair as I believe this is his longest post ever on how the illuminati picked, then systematically groomed China to be the driver in a NWO takeover, got a say, fascinating reading, good ol Rockefeller and Kissinger, kissing luciferain cousins! Besides us putting the brakes on the BRICS takeover, there is one wild card that can and will derail this plan, civil unrest in China, it’s already happening and simmering into a potential powderkeg, sooooo, why is Obama in China on Veterans day? hmmmm, http://www.whitehouse.gov/schedule/president, the NY Times front page article was how there Chinese leader’s are reverting back to their 60-80’s the US is evil with the populace, trying to whip them into patriotic fervor, always the go to way to subvert internal unrest.

[Back to our regularly scheduled Ten of Swords article]

Seriously, what does this have to do with the Ten of Swords?

The answer is “No, it is that bad,” and people need to wake up if they want to get to the sunny dawn/rebirth on the other side of the death by swords. Recognizing the ugliness of a situation allows you to beautify it. Recognizing danger encourages you to implement protections — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, magickal — and the more the better. Recognizing that those running the show have not dumbed themselves down as they have the majority of the population should result in a bit of humble pie to realize, “Oh, oh, oh, oh. Well, crap! What do I do?!” That question is extremely overwhelming and uncomfortable, hence all the Cognitive Dissonance and truncated rabbit hole dives: “Nope, no more tunnels here. Uh-Uh. I’ve uncovered this here wascally wabbit, and I’ve got no need to look any deeper or wider or, gasp, multi-dimensionally. Nope, I got it covered. Why ya gotta be such a hater? You’re so 3D.”

Here’s the good news: remember that Law of Free Will? Well, it does come with the annoying need to accept responsibility for our creations, but it also frees us to reject creations we do not want. Permission DENIED. But Nature abhors a vacuum, so denial will only get you so far. We live in an endlessly creative universe. In order to claim that second meaning of the Ten of Swords (“Alternatively, evils and misfortunes which are over”), we need to fill that vacuum with the new, preferred paradigm.

And that takes work. Here in America, we’ve been taught for at least three generations that hard work isn’t necessary, wise or evolved. Get rich quick. Play the markets. Work the system. Only, just as with those projector screens mentioned earlier, people stop once they see through on or two systems. “The Secret” did not reveal all the secrets. It garbled and diluted them for mass consumption. Manifestation can occur through working systems of reality, but that process requires discipline, discernment and yes, occasionally showing up in the 3D implementation of your vision.

I can use our yard as an example. Despite what a friend tried to tell me last spring while I was weed whacking dandelions gone to puffballs with exponential abandon, “No, it really is that bad.” This yard, when we took it, made me cry. Yes, I saw the potential, and yes, I have spent hours per day figuring out how to create beauty, abundance and fertility in an otherwise destroyed, hideously ugly, forgotten and disharmonious place. But … and here’s the key part: I have also personally hauled over 20,000 pounds of wood mulch, thousands of pounds of compost, volcanic ash, used coffee grounds and rock dust. I’ve invested my own time, money and energy in seeds, trees, used my own diluted urine as a foliar spray when plants were dying from not enough nitrogen, moved plants, sourced plants, weed whacked, hauled concrete, artistically arranged plant groupings, and created wildlife habitats. Yes, I had a vision and help from faeries with whom I took the time to communicate, but I also implemented that vision.

We face formidable challenges in America today and around the world: food insecurity; the poisoning of fresh and ocean water; air pollution; radiation; geo-engineered climate change and droughts; uncontrollable (out of human hands) climate change, volcanoes and floods; over consumption and growing landfills; Satanic ritual abuse and the practically normalized sexualization and abuse of children; a dumbed down population; huge swaths of people completely dependent on the State for food, subsidies and healthcare; weaponized vaccines; leaking nuclear reactors; globalist Kool-Aid drinkers unwittingly ushering others into their own slavery and suicide; actual laws on the books that permit slavery in the US, Ukraine and Greece; banks and a BigPharmafia completely protected from prosecution; corporations with more “personhood” than actual people; a public so brainwashed and overwhelmed by information, EMF’s and technology that they really don’t know if they’re coming or going, and if you try to tell them, they’ll ignore you, ridicule you, attack you or stare at you like you have four heads. There’s more, but I’ll stop now.

A three-fold solution exists:

1) Recognize the problems for what they are. You don’t need to get stuck here, but you won’t know how to address issues without falling into new traps if you adamantly refuse to see the layers of issues. You can choose one or two areas as your focus, but be honest with yourself. Pray for courage and clarity.

2) Remove consent. Literally express the fact in writing, aloud or in some other clearly definitive way that you do not consent to these plans and orchestrated problems. Nor do you consent to the “solutions” engineered for your “reaction.” If, instead of the predicted “reaction” to the “problems,” you simply remove your consent to both the preordained problem and solution, then you step onto your own path.

3) Do what is yours to do. Follow through on your vision, hopes and dreams of an alternative reality. Use whatever skills, tools, passion and calling you feel in whatever ways you can. You don’t need to become a politician, natural healer or organic farmer, but if you feel called in those directions, then start walking. If you feel called to start small, then start small. But start.

I’ve posted this video before, and I will continue to post it, because she’s right on:

Layers Upon Layers: Learning to See Beyond Apparent Dichotomy

I was going to write a much longer post, but I can’t get this song out of my head. It pretty much sums up what I would have said. Those who get it will make the connection. Those who don’t wouldn’t have gotten it from a 2,000 word post anyway.

The Faeries’ Oracle cards from Brian Froud offered “The Pook” as commentary:

“It is time for the resolution of seeming contradictions and paradoxes in the situation. Someone or some part of the situation is cloaked in confusion, and our muddled thoughts must be stripped away, revealing truth. We just need to think about it, the information we needed is now available to us. And as soon as we have that burst of insight and get it, it’s time for us to make changes based on our newly clear understanding.

“Alternatively, it may be time for us to make a reality check on the good/bad labels we put on things. Make a list of the “good” (possibly even surprising things) about this situation, and another list about the “bad” ones. If you are not in the habit of seeing the good in the bad and the bad in the good, having preferred a black-and-white world rather than one with colors, you may need some help in learning to do this well.”

“You enter the forest
at the darkest point,
where there is no path.

Where there is a way or path,
it is someone else’s path.

You are not on your own path.

If you follow someone else’s way,
you are not going to realize
your potential.” ~Joseph Campbell

“Maturity of mind is the capacity to endure uncertainty.” ~ John Filmore

“As human beings, not only do we seek resolution, but we also feel that we deserve resolution. However, not only do we not deserve resolution, we suffer from resolution. We don’t deserve resolution; we deserve something better than that. We deserve our birthright, which is the middle way, an open state of mind that can relax with paradox and ambiguity.”

Revolution? Or evolution? We don’t need another hero, but I am certain we’ll find ourselves presented with one. Might as well make the best of it, eh? 😉

Integration Lifetimes and the Splitting of the Worlds

I keep thinking about Inelia Benz’s recent post, “The Splitting of the Worlds –Coming to a planet near You!” , urging people to consider an option besides simple light or dark … positive or negative. According to Inelia — and I had previously written about this, too:

“The physical separation is really up on the human collective mind right now. I would say, for now, just observe it.

“As I observe it, and this is something that is coming out in the Interview with a Psychic Assassin book, there is a third option manifesting. It’s is so outside of our reality scale that it needs to be observed.

“Basically, light and dark can and do exist without the other. In fact, that’s the only way they can exist. We can see both because there is both existing separately from each other in our world. There is also a reality where neither exists.

“And something that is just appearing in our awareness, is a reality where they both exist as One. Not light and dark making grey, but making a color that is not in our spectrum. Not a reality where they neutralize or mesh, but where a new element emerges.”

This third option has the potential to transcend the duality and extremes currently thrashing collective consensus reality. It’s akin to what I’ve called an “Integration Lifetime,” in which the goal isn’t fixing a single relationship or issue, or succeeding at a particular career, or evening the score; no, it’s much more complicated and yet infinitely simpler than all that! Integration Lifetimes (and there are millions here living them right now in microcosm of larger processes on our planet) aim to reclaim all the disparate facets of our multi-dimensional beings and empower ourselves to live and be in the world but not of it. Even that phrase fails to reflect all the subtleties of an Integration Lifetime, because once you find that new set point and way of being, you can suddenly afford to be “of” the world, too. The weight of the world won’t weigh you down.

The integration process begins with dis-integration, which is why I encounter so many of you as Medical Intuitive clients! Life falls apart in ways that prohibit you from using bandaids, splints and crutches as permanent cures. After the dis-integration comes a period of the Void. You’ve lost everything you thought you knew and were, but you can’t see or feel or know what’s coming, because “it” remains so far off your radar that you miss “it,” even when “it” begins to permeate your being. The Void can last awhile. However long it lasts, it feels uncomfortable. The sooner you embrace that discomfort of uncertainty, the sooner you notice something massive, healing and deeply nourishing moving through your life. It seems murky at first, hidden in the shadows, and in fact, Shadow Work becomes an important part of moving from the Void into the New.

Shadow Work requires great courage and fortitude, but it offers great rewards, as well. You begin to recognize the eternal parts of yourself, even as you catch flickers of new versions of you that look and feel vaguely familiar, yet somehow more whole, grounded and vast. For some people who tend to live very multi-dimensionally, such integration can even include making peace with linear time and the rational mind. For most people, it requires exploring (and sometimes even mastering) the concepts, ideas and skills that you find scary and repulsive. It’s not about right/left or right/wrong. Nor is it just a blob of formless, mindless goo. Real integration is about options, choices and responsible co-creation.

Most teachings on the Law of Attraction suggest that we must only focus on that which we desire, so that we don’t send ourselves into the downward spiral of “miscreation.” Although it sounds good to focus only on the positive and that which we do want, it actually takes tremendous energy and mental gymnastics to attempt to ignore things we’d rather not experience. The tricky part is that not everyone’s living in the same type of incarnation. People on a “regular” lifetime can leave their Shadows for dealing with another time. People here on Integration Lifetimes, by contrast, find that when they ignore Shadows, the Shadows get bigger, more threatening, and scream for more and more attention.

As a Medical Intuitive, I see so much of this dynamic play out in complex, chronic health crises, especially Lyme Disease, brain injury, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, endocrine disruption, and various autoimmune conditions. These sorts of conditions can easily become a game of whack-a-mole, which so perfectly mirrors the larger world right now with its myriad crises and intertwining rabbit holes. Just when you think you’ve gotten a handle on one symptom or corrupt group, another three blindside you — screaming even louder for attention. Most days during the week, I speak with at least one, sometimes several people who confess that they are paralyzed by the fear of death. Sometimes it’s the fear of suffering. Sometimes the fear that this current symptom or situation “will never go away.” Not just mild anxiety. We’re talking paralyzing, white knuckled, raw FEAR.

For people on an Integration Lifetime, positive affirmations rarely work, and — even more frustrating — these folks have usually done a lot of spiritual growth work, plus extensive study of natural and energetic healing, Law of Attraction, metaphysics, Ancient Traditions, science, art and more. They look around at people far less aware having far fewer and less intense issues, and they begin to judge themselves for “being a fraud” or “flaky” or “self-sabotaging.” Meanwhile, such judgment exponentially fortifies the blocks against healing and integration! Someone not on an Integration Lifetime reading a bunch of Hay House books might find that material life changing, because they’re encountering new material. But few things feel new to those on an Integration Lifetime. This sense of world weariness extends even into alternative spiritual and healing realms. These souls might feel initial resonance but then quickly return to feeling bored or disjointed — huge levels of awareness coupled with seemingly disproportionate 3D problems.

The worst thing you can do on an Integration Lifetime is try to make yourself conform to “normal” expectations and compare yourself to people not on an Integration Lifetime! Doing so will add to your confusion, because not everyone thriving on Hay House, yoga and Law of Attraction is on an Integration Lifetime! They might be great people with a lot to offer the world; they might be on a fast track to spiritual growth and development; but if they’re not on an Integration Lifetime, then don’t be surprised when their “sure fire” methods backfire for you.

This dynamic has implications for collective consensus reality and splitting timelines, too, bringing us back to Inelia’s comments: “And something that is just appearing in our awareness, is a reality where they both exist as One. Not light and dark making grey, but making a color that is not in our spectrum. Not a reality where they neutralize or mesh, but where a new element emerges.

“The urge to separate to different realities seems to be somehow related to the emergence of this new vibration. It is almost like if we don’t separate now, we will be all gobbled up into the new element and that is so unknown, so different, so ‘not human’ that we are pushing our choice hard now.”

The challenge for those on an Integration Lifetime is that “healed” does not mean “returning to the way things were.” No model exists for the new version of you, because you haven’t yet given birth to it. In the same way a child hides in the mother’s womb, this new version of you hasn’t yet seen the light of (any) day. It’s a new Creation, still nebulous in the realm of pure potential. We are in times of tremendous choice right now, and the type of lifetime you’re on largely influences what choices your soul will find most satisfying. The urge to split — although a strong one — also feels a bit “been there, done that” to those on Integration Lifetimes. To those younger souls just discovering things like the Law of Attraction and Reality Creation, splitting the worlds into light and dark, positive and negative seems like a fabulous opportunity. Even those on an Integration Lifetime might sometimes fantasize about living in the land of lollipops and gumdrops. Organic and sugar-free, of course! 😉 But ultimately, those on an Integration Lifetime would find themselves bored with that scenario, in the same way that people who’ve gone through a major life transition find old parts of their life feel too small or “flat.”

Healing for those on an Integration Lifetime is not so much about removal, as it is about conscious Creation. Sometimes Creation involves a carving away — like sculpting — but that carving away does not become an end in itself. Rather, the carving away exists as a step, perhaps many, many steps, in service to a greater vision, inspiration and spontaneous engagement with the material. Carving reveals Shadows, as greater depth encourages the play of light and dark, but the whole of Creation eventually reveals itself as far more than the sum of its individual cuts. An artist adds something with each taking away, infusing the Creation with life force energy until that Creation can hold its own.

I believe the third option of which Inelia speaks has begun to hint at its arrival, because enough people on Integration Lifetimes have come far enough on their individual journeys to open space for something beyond the Void. Old tugs to the familiar remain, but continued Shadow Work coupled with active, conscious Creation in both the imagination and in tangible ways — will continue to gestate this new option until the birthing time.

Different people engage Shadows in different ways. My dear friend and sweet faery twin, Tania Marie prefers not to work as an activist exposing wrongs or fighting for rights, but she’s got a body full of extremely potent, powerful, deliberate, beautiful and what some people have even called “scary” tattoos. She’s got a dragon, snakes, and jaguars, occult symbols, Moon goddesses, and ancient languages all in black, black, black ink all over her body. That’s a lot of intensity, money and pain, which she wears in indelible ink as an unapologetic reclamation of the power, Shadow projections, and often corrupted goodness attached to all these things. Embodying the Shadow literally on her body allows Tania to live her life with innocence and childlike wonder while still honoring the vastness and power of her being. Her book, Spiritual Skin, helps others to explore a similar path.

Tattoos are widely popular right now, but not for everyone. Some people invoke and integrate their Shadows by embracing whatever taboos have most defined their lives. Others move through various Archetypes and roles. Others attract life threatening illness or injury, which makes them reconcile with their own mortality. Since we all die at some point, this last version of Shadow Work opens itself to everyone — even those not on a full Integration Lifetime. Inelia has noted that “Gaia (Earth/Terra) has actively been pushing for a physical separation that is done through time, three generations, and is trauma free and gentle.” Those on Integration Lifetimes tend to feel deeply connected to Terra and tend to be the ones walking a fine line with awareness of this unsustainable civilization and way of life crumbling to its core (scary Shadow stuff!) and the joy, freedom and excitement of creating and welcoming the new.

As more and more Integration Lifetime folks move through their own process of dis-integration and learning to accept the Void, the human frequency on this planet continues to rise and offer encouragement for entirely new ways of being. We can reclaim the best of the old and the new, while consciously finding ways to integrate the pain, darkness and fear boiling to the surface of collective consensus reality. Energy adepts know that energy is energy, so we can mitigate the need for drastic physical events like pandemics and devastating tsunamis by exploring their energy signatures and finding different ways to rearrange and morph the energy. Kind of like radical feng shui!

Those who’ve already journeyed through the Void might find their skills and experiences increasingly welcomed as we redecorate and remodel reality, as the awakening masses begin to ask, “OK, we see it, but what the heck are we supposed to do with all this stuff????” The splitting of the worlds option gets rid of it, along with a whole lot of the material world. The integration option might involve some decluttering, but it doesn’t necessarily mean gutting. Think “re-purposing” or making art from junk, beauty from the discordant, healing from pain. The collective has not decided on a path yet, but individuals will each make their own choice. Collective consensus reality just means the tipping point of people with relatively aligned choices. If you suspect you’re on an Integration Lifetime and have been hammering the “positive” button, I’d simply encourage you to use this time delay to make sure you won’t be bored with your selection. Red pill, blue pill. Why take any pill? Or maybe you want a purple one. Maybe you want a world beyond pills.

Collectively, we’re in the Void right now, which means we wait. We can drive ourselves crazy with the waiting game, or we can use the extra linear time to explore and begin to create all sorts of worlds before we fully move into the new. You know what they say: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow’s a mystery, but today’s a gift. That’s why they call it ‘the present.'” I’ll repost Joanna Macy’s wonderful talk on the gift of Uncertainty and wish you many blessings:

Dealing with That Which You Might Not Know

Some thoughts to ponder, especially for people newly awakening to the sham of consensus reality on this planet:
It’s very tempting to jump from one certainty to a complete rejection of that “certainty” and replacing it with another rigid, absolute “truth.” I see this happen all the time. It’s one reason ex-smokers tend to be most intolerant of smokers and why ex-fundamentalist Christians so often become fundamentalist New Agers … or why people who find some conspiracy theories turned out to be true often run through a phase in which they knee-jerk reject everything mainstream and swallow everything alternative. This dynamic gets people into trouble and makes them easy pickin’s for manipulation and psyops. Learning to face uncertainty brings challenges, but “Knowing that you know nothing is the beginning of wisdom.”
“I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain and definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy and creativity to name a few.” ~ Brene Brown
“It is in the admission of ignorance and the admission of uncertainty that there is hope for the continuous motion of human beings in some direction that doesn’t get confined, permanently blocked, as it has so many times before in various periods in the history of man.” ~Richard P. Feynman
I wrote to a friend this morning:
“It is incredible how certain and smug people are about their one little sliver of reality they just discovered. Multi-facets? Unknowns? Oh, no. They have the answers and they don’t even recognize how they’re all being played. Why is it so difficult for people to admit, “I don’t know all the answers to this. I realize there may be hidden factors off my radar, so I will prepare some contingency plans just in case I’m wrong in this moment of smug satisfaction”? Is it because if they admitted to themselves some things they don’t know they might get scared by the vastness of what they don’t know and fear (even healthy warnings) is against their new religion?”
As ironic as it is for me to quote Donald Rumsfeld’s much dismissed comment used to justify another bogus war, he was hiding the uncomfortable truth in plain view when he said: “Reports that say that something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don’t know we don’t know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones.”
“Unknown unknowns” can be used to shape all manner of public policies, wars, and protocols, because when individuals and/or entire cultures forget or dismiss that there may be unknown unknowns, they leave themselves vulnerable to blind spots and subject to the Hegelian Dialectic of problem, reaction, solution. When we befriend uncertainty, we discover that other options exist! Here’s Joanna Macy sharing the incredible freedom and rewards of uncertainty:
