These Are the Stories We Don’t Always Hear … But They Are There, and Heartwarming!

This story happened in 2014, but I just came across it today. It’s short and definitely sweet. I know of so many outcomes like this, but I cannot usually share them due to confidentiality. For anyone who gets discouraged about humanity, please know that random acts of kindness change people’s lives.

Reaching out and making a difference in children’s lives can make a lasting shift. Offering help at the right time — not from a place of sacrifice, but from a place of inspiration — keeps us in flow and generates huge ripples. We don’t always know the follow-up stories of what a kind word, gesture or donation does, but if it feels right to be generous or to give someone a leg up, please know and trust that you are making a real difference.

You can’t legislate compassion, but you can foster it by recognizing those key moments when your presence and response aligns with Grace. When you become the answered prayer someone doesn’t even know they’re praying. We are all connected to the Touch of the Divine, and it flows with presence, attention, and stepping out of our own way.

Charles Eisenstein ~ The Lid is Off

This is the best article I’ve read about the election and various revelations happening, particularly in the U.S., and how that all relates to us on a personal and collective level. This piece illustrates what I tell so many clients: Earth herself is in an integration phase, and this directly relates to human evolution. Thanks to Bo of Orgonia for sending this piece my way.

Here’s a little excerpt, followed by a link to the full, excellent article:

Charles Eisenstein ~ The Lid is Off

It is getting harder to keep a secret these days. The collective shadow of our society, once safely relegated to the dark basement of the unmentionable, is now exposed to daylight, forcing us to face our contradictions. I’ll offer three examples: Donald Trump’s leaked recordings, Hillary Clinton’s emails and Wall Street speeches, and the endless procession of videos of police brutality.

Once upon a time, “locker room talk” like Donald Trump’s lewd and degrading remarks leaked to the media would have stayed safely sequestered from public view. Misogynistic locker room banter existed, as it were, in an alternate universe. … [read the rest here.]

Fairy Tales and Preparing Children for Life in the American Police State

I appreciate this post on Zero Hedge, as it explores what our broken culture does to our children, and it even makes some mention of fairy tales as the old ways of teaching children. If you are a parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparent troubled by what you see happening in America, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Bruno Bettelheim’s book, “The Uses of Enchantment,” which explores how specific fairy tales (the originals, not the Disney cotton candy and mind programming versions) provide tools for children to learn how to deal with adversity. By allowing children to read the scary tales and to recognize the Ancient Wisdom and skills embedded into the tales for safe keeping, we empower children to develop necessary skills and protections, which their rational and speech levels may not yet be capable of grasping.

This is a difficult post on Zero Hedge, but an important one, imho, since our children truly are our future. What kind of future are we leaving for them to navigate? What kind of tools and skills might we impart to them — now — so that they can become agents of change, instead of victims of it?

Zero Hedge ~ How Do you Prepare a Child for Life in the American Police State?

Submitted by John Whitehead via The Rutherford Institute,

“Fear isn’t so difficult to understand. After all, weren’t we all frightened as children? Nothing has changed since Little Red Riding Hood faced the big bad wolf. What frightens us today is exactly the same sort of thing that frightened us yesterday. It’s just a different wolf.” ~ Alfred Hitchcock

In an age dominated with news of school shootings, school lockdowns, police shootings of unarmed citizens (including children), SWAT team raids gone awry (leaving children devastated and damaged), reports of school resource officers tasering and shackling unruly students, and public schools undergoing lockdowns and active drills, I find myself wrestling with the question: how do you prepare a child for life in the American police state?

Every parent lives with a fear of the dangers that prey on young children: the predators who lurk at bus stops and playgrounds, the traffickers who make a living by selling young bodies, the peddlers who push drugs that ensnare and addict, the gangs that deal in violence and bullets, the drunk drivers, the school bullies, the madmen with guns, the diseases that can end a life before it’s truly begun, the cynicism of a modern age that can tarnish innocence, and the greed of a corporate age that makes its living by trading on young consumers.

It’s difficult enough raising a child in a world ravaged by war, disease, poverty and hate, but when you add the police state into the mix—with its battlefield mindset, weaponry, rigidity, surveillance, fascism, indoctrination, violence, etc.—it becomes near impossible to guard against the toxic stress of police shootings, SWAT team raids, students being tasered and shackled, lockdown drills, and a growing unease that some of the monsters of our age come dressed in government uniforms.

Children are taught from an early age that there are consequences for their actions.

Subtle and Overt Attacks on the Goddess, Nature, and the Sacred Feminine

In an uncharacteristic pattern, I’ve been working on this post for a couple weeks. Normally, if I don’t finish in one go, then the post gets deleted or forever floats in limbo. I signed on yesterday with the intent to delete this one as too obvious, too alarmed, or too unnecessary. Then, I stumbled upon so many attacks on Nature, the Goddess and everything associated with the Feminine that I realized I needed to finish this piece and post it. You see, the attacks weren’t just coming from men and the military industrial complex; they were also spouting from the mouths and keyboards of people who usually recognize and honor the Sacred and Divine Feminine, especially the Mother Goddess energies responsible for creation, seasons, nurturing, and growth. I post the following links as examples of just how insidious and desperate the attempts have become to eradicate the very principle of Life. When we recognize the patterns of suppression, we can also discover clues of what reclamations would break the chains.

This destructive, perverse impulse pervades society, but it is especially strong in both the medical mafia and the New Age Movement, neither of which celebrate or honor Life. Monica Sjöö has written entire books about this topic, including Return of the Dark/Light Mother or New Age Armageddon?, which I reviewed here and reblogged yesterday. For today, I will simply include a few headlines, comments and links to the full articles, asking that while reading them you look for both the symbolic and the very real physical side effects of the actions these articles describe. What’s the unifying theme from so many “helpful” and “empowering” angles? If we follow this trajectory, what happens to our bodies, to our planet, to our poor, fragmented souls? Conversely, I wonder what happens when instead of rejecting and destroying, we –men, women and all children —reclaim our alignment with this true Source of power, wisdom and love.

Cutting Out the Feminine

Here’s an excellent piece from Green Med Info, called “Beware of Organ Removal for ‘Cancer Prevention’: Jolie’s Precautionary Tale.” While more focused on the medical misrepresentation of facts than on the broader philosophical and spiritual implications, this article gives a clear, detailed and difficult to deny run-down of traditional medicine’s war on women’s distinctively female body parts in the name of “safety” and “protection.” I had written “About Those Breasts” when it was first reported that Angelina Jolie lopped off her breasts as a precaution against a “genetic marker” for breast cancer. While I support Jolie’s decision to do whatever she wants with her body, I mourn the media’s propaganda to try to make such unnecessary butchery a trend. The Green Med article explains the tricky manipulation of statistics, along with frequent (documented) misdiagnoses.

Again, it’s not really a philosophical article, but I ask you to use wider vision and awareness when reading this in context of other things happening in our world. One such thing includes plans to separate women into categories of gene donors, fetus carriers, and “mothers,” thereby fragmenting and effectively mechanizing women in the name of eugenics and social engineering.

Disabling the Moon

We may or may not know whether there’s a base on the Moon, whether humans ever landed on it, and whether or not it’s hollow. What any good researcher does know, though, is that the Moon has long been associated with the feminine, with Goddess energies, feelings, creativity, and intuition. The Moon allows for seasons on our planet, fosters the tides that keep areas from becoming totally flooded or complete deserts, and it reminds us of the ever present ability to fade and renew. Things spring to life, die and grow again, like the cycles of Nature, the cycles of Life, and the ancient archetypes of Maiden, Mother and Crone. Farmers and witches alike know that working with the Moon can enhance outcomes — whether crops or intentions. As a reflector of the Sun, the Moon also represents the receptive quality, which is just as important on all levels as the active Solar Male Principle. Before electric lights, women menstruated in harmony with the Moon, strengthening connections among women and with Mother Earth Herself.

As with most alternative media topics, when the talking heads share “truth” about the Moon, we never hear them talking about women’s wisdom or the Goddess — unless someone decides to pervert a real tradition of life into some kind of masculine or transhumanist co-opted “lunar death cult.” Whenever people bring out the “truth,” it tends to reveal just a stronger, more acute angle of the same old, same old denigration, fear, co-optation or suppression of anything associated with the empowered Feminine or Goddess energy.

All of which brings me to the second link — a mish-mash of New Age dogma, rumor, David Icke revealed half-truths, and pseudo-science: “How Disabling the Moon Will Dissolve the Matrix.” While I’m sure these people mean well, they do not recognize or celebrate their bodies as part of Earth; and they have so disowned anything to do with the Dark/Light Mother that they can’t even see how they’re playing right into twisted anti-human, patriarchal programs, while claiming liberation from those very things. I found some encouragement in the comments. At least a few people recognize this plan for the destructive, manipulative perversion that it is.

Gagging on the Goddess

And then there’s this piece, called “Illuminati Blasphemy – Gog, Google, Gold and the Goddess,” which could have potential from its title. Alas, no. This piece does a great job dissecting how advertisers have co-opted the Goddess for their own ends. It calls this process blasphemy, but not against the Goddess. Make no mistake: according to this article, anything even remotely associated with Goddess energy comes from the pit of hell, determined to seduce and drag you into it. Nowhere does this article explore the obvious elephant in the room — that the advertising works because it appeals to parts of humanity that have been so rejected, disowned, and denied that vapid, rampant, insatiable consumerism can freely exploit such sacred receptors. This piece comes from a fundamentalist Christian perspective, but I hear echoes of it all the time on “truther” websites claiming to debunk the “public Illuminati Satanic rituals” at major sporting or music events. As usual, the debunkers tell part of the story, but in the telling, they dramatically underscore and embolden the original attack on life itself.

Calvinists in New Age Clothing

You can find the article that finally convinced me to finish this post by clicking here. Called “The Unmasking of an Archon” and written by a supposedly love filled, enlightened author, this piece and the earlier one she cites would have given John Calvin a run for his money. For those not familiar with Calvin, his misogynist version of Christianity inspired such a frenzy that it initiated the most draconian, theocratic police state Western society has ever witnessed. Eradicating the devil — which meant anything to do with images, the body, feminine power, sex, sensuality, natural healing, most women, and all of Nature — became an obsession, turning Geneva into a patriarchal, iron fisted bloodbath — all in the name of purification.

Believe it or not, I toned down my comments:

Monica Sjöö must be turning over in her grave at the anti-life, anti-body, “liberating” message of this post. People give the A-cons (and they are A$$-cons) way too much power. Even continuing to call them “Archons” or “Rulers” affirms their “higher,” “more powerful” status. They’re the great deceivers, and they’ve got people conned into believing the A-cons have even more power than they do. They’ve got supposedly awakened people hating the natural world, hating ALL aspects of sexuality and sensuality, terrified of anything Goddess related, throwing all babies out with dirty bath water until eventually there’s nothing left. Does a path have heart? I also ask, what does that heart love? Does it love our planet? Does it nurture Life? Or has the heart become consumed by such a victim mentality that it in turn persecutes whatever remains of Life?

What about sacred sexuality? What about kundalini energy or sex magic? What about getting in touch with one’s real desires, which stem from an urge to create life — not just for self-replication, but also through the desire to create beauty and harmony, to merge in watery depths with another soul, to create *with* the rest of the natural world? What about the inherent sacredness of our bodies and of our planet? What about all the other ways of “killing a parasite”? Because yes, there IS more than one way. You can alter the environment of the host, thereby making the host less attractive to the parasite, and you can do this through a variety of means, not only on the mental plane. You can also ingest antidotes that kill parasites, and these can be physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual, magical, ritual, and yes, even mental.

The second chakra is one of the primary creative chakras. Reclaim it, don’t reject it.

Do you really think she’s rejecting the second chakra?

laurabruno says:
April 7, 2015 at 5:55 pm

I don’t see any acknowledgement of any inherent value to the second chakra or any honoring of what a reclamation might look like, no mention of the life-giving creativity of the water center. No mention of how the very things most hijacked were hijacked because they house some of the greatest liberating power. No mention of how “loosh” can be reworked so that we summon, expand and then direct our own emotions to empower those things we most desire for planetary healing. If that message is in this post or the one she references, then it’s an extremely hidden (i.e. unintentionally “occult”) message.

I see what you mean, and I also feel that the value of her concise post is what she does say, not what she does not say. You wanted her to supply a larger context for her remarks. That wasn’t her intention.

Everything we say can be placed in a larger framework, which then, morphs its meaning. So what? I hope that my introductory remarks supplied some of the context missing for you. The point is, whether or not its archons or some other kind of explanation for historical, cultural, familial and/or personal oppression, our first three chakras, when divorced from heart-centered awareness, DO tend to devolve towards service-to-self and survival modes, whether as victim or predator. That’s what the mind/body split is all about, and has been for centuries. You, Monica and I — and most likely, Elva Thompson — all realize this and, in concert with Earth’s primal and mysterious aliveness, we are putting our HEARTS into everything we do.

laurabruno says:
April 8, 2015 at 11:13 am

No, I didn’t take any issue with your introductory remarks. My comment was based on observing a trend in her work not to provide the larger integrated and regenerative context. I see that as a dangerous trend, not just from her, but from so many “enlightened” people who tend to demonize the lower chakras. The upper chakras can be just as brutal, if not more so, when divorced of their connection not just to the heart but to the lower chakras. Whenever the blame is placed so strongly on the material realm or something “outside” us, some “parasite” with so much more control than we supposedly have, to me it screams of a need for Shadow Work and reclamation.

I meant no offense to you. That piece was just one in a much longer chain of pieces (from her and others) denigrating matter, the Mystery, and the lower chakras without any mention of redemption. It seems the prescribed solution would make John Calvin proud, and I find that attitude one of the most oppressive and life-denying ideas imaginable — much more in line with the A-con agenda than against it.

Ann Kreilkamp says:
April 8, 2015 at 11:35 am

Yes yes yes. The upper chakras “can be just as brutal.” And the compartmentalization of ideas can be just as pernicious as that of roles we unknowingly play in the gigantic systemic tsunami that is driving civilization (and Earth) toward catastrophe. Agree. Thanks, Laura, for further elucidation.

Thanks for creating space for the discussion. It just really hit me on so many levels as I’ve been writing an article for weeks now about this very thing. So thank you, Elva, for providing the shock and horror to get me to finish it.

***

Synchronously, after my initial online freakout, David returned from work by way of the library, where he felt called to pick up a copy of Avatar. I’d never seen this film before, but he felt last night was the right time. Indeed, it was. We watched the patriarchal, out of touch, insatiable military industrial complex sneer at Goddess and tree worship, mock the deep connection to Nature as “animal,” and objectify the delicate, visceral beauty that runs through all of Nature, including human[oid] nature. This objectification, this utter disgust and contempt that justifies annihilation is what concerns me most when “truthers” end up strengthening the very agenda they claim to subvert.

For an excellent discussion of the difference between the “reptilian agenda” and Serpent (Goddess) Wisdom, please read John Lamb Lash’s post, “Who Wrote the Reptilian Agenda?” While I cannot endorse parts of John’s most recent work and direction, I feel his earlier work reveals some of the most crucial healing insights for our times.

I conclude by echoing a favorite quote from Monica Sjöö’s book “Return of the Dark/Light Mother or New Age Armageddon?”:

“I believe in the power of thought and of thought-forms. I know the importance of meditation and visualisation. I believe in the reality of communication with the spirits, of the spiritworld and of reincarnation. I have experienced many times the oracular power of wells and of the sacred places of the Goddess. I do believe that we are indivisible and holistically whole. I believe that we must open our second sight and ‘see’ again. I believe that if we work with Earth’s places of power and Her evolutionary lights, we ourselves will be deeply affected and great changes will come about. I believe in synchronicity — as above, so below — and in multiple universes.

“Superficially, one might think that I have much in common with New Age thinking. But, as I have tried to show throughout this book, there are great differences indeed between being open to psychic changes on many levels and adopting the fundamentally reactionary, anti-Earth and anti-Goddess, patriarchal religious views of so many New Agers. I do not believe that they truly love Earth, our sorrowing Mother.

“I sense that we are having a mass near-death experience at this time… Now is the time for all visionaries — women and men — to come to the aid of our ancient Earth Mother. We must struggle to make far-reaching changes politically and economically if we are to survive, and we must indeed also mediate worldwide and dream Her alive. …”

May we celebrate Life.
May we honor Our Mother.
May we remember we are Her children.
May we reclaim our place in the Cycle of Life.

Nick Bernabe ~ Total Mainstream Media Blackout of Chicago Secret “Black Site” at Homan Square

Now we can see why there’s been so much fighting to control the internet! Between all the proposed mandatory vaccine legislation (and shenanigans) at both state and federal levels and this revelation of an NDAA torture site run by Chicago Police, I think we can safely say the would-be forever controllers are turning the screws. Big time.

Since we don’t actually know what was in the 300-page “Net Neutrality” Law, it’s too soon to tell for sure if that was something to celebrate or deeply mourn. I mean, with this “transparent” government controlling the internet, what could possibly go wrong? Google seems to be hedging its bets by becoming its own Ministry of Truth, desiring to rank searches not by links but by what they determine as “Truth.” Ahem. Because when I think of Google and their robot army and top secret offshore facilities, I immediately get the warm fuzzies and think “Paragon of Truth.” 😉

In the meantime, while we still have the internet, here’s something you probably won’t learn about any other way:

Nick Bernabe
February 28, 2015

(ANTIMEDIA) Chicago, IL — As the nation continues to react to the newly discovered ‘black site’ operated by Chicago Police, the mainstream media continues to bury it’s head in the sand.

National media outlets like Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are unsurprisingly refusing to touch this story, driving even further suspicion that the corporate media has become nothing more than a mouthpiece for big government and corporate America.

As we reported earlier this week, local corporate media was literally running stories about Homan Square that were direct copies from CPD’s public relations statements.

According to interviews conducted by The Atlantic, local mainstream reporters often agree with these disappear and torture tactics, so they refuse to do their jobs at uncovering what is going on there;

“I think that many crime reporters in Chicago have political views that are right in line with the police,” Tracy Siska said. “They tend to agree about the tactics needed by the police. They tend to have by one extent or the other the same racist views of the police — a lot of urban police (not all of them by any stretch, but a lot of them) embody racism.”

Meanwhile, a campaign we launched to shed light on Homan Square, #Gitmo2Chicago, trended nationwide last night on Twitter and today on Facebook — showing that the public at large is generally disgusted by these CIA-style tactics.

So while the corporate media posts 3 million stories about the color of a dress, the country is questioning the police state in a big way.

As I write this, a large protest is taking place in Chicago at Homan Square to shut it down, with more protests being planned across the country in the coming weeks.

But keep in mind, the Revolution will not be televised on Cable TV, but it will be on the internet. Watch live video from the protests here.

Jon Rappoport ~ The Solution to Everything: Slavery to the State

A glimpse into why politics is a matter of both spirit and — more importantly — soul. The New Age Borg or the State collective? “At this point, what difference does it make?”

Unplug. Be you.

Your rational mind knows that you’re a grown adult, capable of free will, and that the government is not your parent … but do you really know those things? Do your choices and attitudes reflect that knowledge? Beware the “solution to everything.” Soul removal’s included, but it sure ain’t free.

The Solution to Everything: Slavery to the State
By Jon Rappoport

Let me clarify that. Slavery to the corporate State. Government and mega-corporations work hand in hand.

The incurably naïve believe the State is beneficent. The government is kind. The government knows what to do. The government will solve society’s ills if we let it.

Of course, the government, in the form of NSA, is spying on everybody all the time—but you see, that’s not really the government. It’s a rogue element.

Sure it is. And rainbows will appear at any moment and the people of Earth will experience a galactic frequency that eradicates all impulses toward conflict.

To put it another way, people see what they want to see.

“Ahem, when I say ‘government,’ I don’t mean the CIA or the Pentagon or the FDA or the President’s national security team, or fraudulent federal scientists, or the whole lot of venal people in Congress, or corrupt prosecutors and judges or invasive bureaucrats or paper-pushing money-sucking desk jockeys.”

Of course not. Government is an idea in the mind of God.

And when you think about it, the NSA watches over us to make sure we stay on the path of righteousness. It’s absurd to be suspicious of the State. The authors of the Constitution, who tried to limit central authority, were a bunch of paranoids.

We need more government, not less.

Here are quotes from George Orwell. In case there is any doubt, he is describing aspects of the State:

“As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life.” (The Lion and the Unicorn, 1941)

“Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by ‘our’ side.” (Notes on Nationalism, 1945)

“A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible. But since, in practice, no one is infallible, it is frequently necessary to rearrange past events in order to show that this or that mistake was not made, or that this or that imaginary triumph actually happened. Then, again, every major change in policy demands a corresponding change of doctrine and a revaluation of prominent historical figures.” (The Prevention of Literature, 1946)

“But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty’s figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another. Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connexion with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connexion that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version.” (1984, chapter 4)

“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.” (1984, chapter 5)

But you see, these are all old Orwell remarks. Now we have a different kind of State. It’s…government. Yes. The State isn’t government. Aha. The State exists in places other than America. In America, we have government. Yes, that’s right. Two different animals. One is repressive, and the other is earnest. (More rainbows for the sentimentalists.)

Here are quotes about the State from Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel, Brave New World:

“Till at last the child’s mind is these suggestions, and the sum of the suggestions is the child’s mind. And not the child’s mind only. The adult’s mind too—all his life long. The mind that judges and desires and decides—made up of these suggestions. But all these suggestions are our suggestions!” (Chapter 2)

“Every one belongs to every one else.” (Chapter 3)

“Mother, monogamy, romance. High spurts the fountain; fierce and foamy the wild jet. The urge has but a single outlet. My love, my baby. No wonder these poor pre-moderns were mad and wicked and miserable.” (Chapter 3)

“Everyone works for every one else.” (Chapter 5)

“Don’t you wish you were free, Lenina?”
“I don’t know what you mean. I am free. Free to have the most wonderful time. Everybody’s happy nowadays.”
He laughed, “Yes, ‘Everybody’s happy nowadays.’ We begin giving the children that at five. But wouldn’t you like to be free to be happy in some other way, Lenina? In your own way, for example; not in everybody else’s way.”
“I don’t know what you mean,” she repeated. (Chapter 6)

But again, Huxley’s remarks are about the aspirations and victories of the State, which doesn’t exist in America. Never has.

In America, we have a fluid and flexible government, which tries to respond to the people’s needs. Of course. Just ask Elizabeth Warren or Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, George W Bush, or the ghost of Richard Nixon. Ask the heads of Goldman Sachs, Monsanto, Dow, DuPont. Google, Facebook, Microsoft.

There are “repressive States” in Europe, Asia, and Africa, but that is a foreign phenomenon.

Rebelling against the State? Not here. Here we merge with the government and help it and encourage it. Besides, we’ve recently learned—and this is a revelation—that rebelling is very likely a terrorist act. Well, that settles that.

We’re all in this together. Even if the “we” and the “this” and the “together” seem to require some further clarification, rest assured it will be forthcoming. At the right time.

The government understands time (and also space). It arranges them. Someone has to.

The government is not the State, the government is not the State.

Assange Statement on the First Day of Manning Trial

This is seriously one of the most important trials of our time. Please don’t close your eyes to this one. We need Prayer, Reiki, Truth, Courage, potent Intention, and some kind of Divine Intervention to turn around this blood-dimmed tide. Perhaps it’s time for the Morrigan –Goddess of Sovereignty, Goddess of the Land and a kiss a$$ battle Goddess — to protect her true warriors. Truth Warriors. Julian Assange of Wikileaks enters his statement into the public domain:

Assange Statement on the First Day of Manning Trial
Monday 3rd June 2013, 22:00 GMT

Statement by Julian Assange

As I type these lines, on June 3, 2013, Private First Class Bradley Edward Manning is being tried in a sequestered room at Fort Meade, Maryland, for the alleged crime of telling the truth. The court martial of the most prominent political prisoner in modern US history has now, finally, begun.

It has been three years. Bradley Manning, then 22 years old, was arrested in Baghdad on May 26, 2010. He was shipped to Kuwait, placed into a cage, and kept in the sweltering heat of Camp Arifjan.

“For me, I stopped keeping track,” he told the court last November. “I didn’t know whether night was day or day was night. And my world became very, very small. It became these cages… I remember thinking I’m going to die.”

After protests from his lawyers, Bradley Manning was then transferred to a brig at a US Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA, where – infamously – he was subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment at the hands of his captors – a formal finding by the UN. Isolated in a tiny cell for twenty-three out of twenty-four hours a day, he was deprived of his glasses, sleep, blankets and clothes, and prevented from exercising. All of this – it has been determined by a military judge – “punished” him before he had even stood trial.

“Brad’s treatment at Quantico will forever be etched, I believe, in our nation’s history, as a disgraceful moment in time” said his lawyer, David Coombs. “Not only was it stupid and counterproductive, it was criminal.”

The United States was, in theory, a nation of laws. But it is no longer a nation of laws for Bradley Manning.

When the abuse of Bradley Manning became a scandal reaching all the way to the President of the United States and Hillary Clinton’s spokesman resigned to register his dissent over Mr. Manning’s treatment, an attempt was made to make the problem less visible. Bradley Manning was transferred to the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

He has waited in prison for three years for a trial – 986 days longer than the legal maximum – because for three years the prosecution has dragged its feet and obstructed the court, denied the defense access to evidence and abused official secrecy. This is simply illegal – all defendants are constitutionally entitled to a speedy trial – but the transgression has been acknowledged and then overlooked.

Against all of this, it would be tempting to look on the eventual commencement of his trial as a mercy. But that is hard to do.

We no longer need to comprehend the “Kafkaesque” through the lens of fiction or allegory. It has left the pages and lives among us, stalking our best and brightest. It is fair to call what is happening to Bradley Manning a “show trial”. Those invested in what is called the “US military justice system” feel obliged to defend what is going on, but the rest of us are free to describe this travesty for what it is. No serious commentator has any confidence in a benign outcome. The pretrial hearings have comprehensively eliminated any meaningful uncertainty, inflicting pre-emptive bans on every defense argument that had any chance of success.

Bradley Manning may not give evidence as to his stated intent (exposing war crimes and their context), nor may he present any witness or document that shows that no harm resulted from his actions. Imagine you were put on trial for murder. In Bradley Manning’s court, you would be banned from showing that it was a matter of self-defence, because any argument or evidence as to intent is banned. You would not be able to show that the ’victim’ is, in fact, still alive, because that would be evidence as to the lack of harm.

But of course. Did you forget whose show it is?

The government has prepared for a good show. The trial is to proceed for twelve straight weeks: a fully choreographed extravaganza, with a 141-strong cast of prosecution witnesses. The defense was denied permission to call all but a handful of witnesses. Three weeks ago, in closed session, the court actually held a rehearsal. Even experts on military law have called this unprecedented.

Bradley Manning’s conviction is already written into the script. The commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces, Barack Obama, spoiled the plot for all of us when he pronounced Bradley Manning guilty two years ago. “He broke the law,” President Obama stated, when asked on camera at a fundraiser about his position on Mr. Manning. In a civilized society, such a prejudicial statement alone would have resulted in a mistrial.

To convict Bradley Manning, it will be necessary for the US government to conceal crucial parts of his trial. Key portions of the trial are to be conducted in secrecy: 24 prosecution witnesses will give secret testimony in closed session, permitting the judge to claim that secret evidence justifies her decision. But closed justice is no justice at all.

What cannot be shrouded in secrecy will be hidden through obfuscation. The remote situation of the courtroom, the arbitrary and discretionary restrictions on access for journalists, and the deliberate complexity and scale of the case are all designed to drive fact-hungry reporters into the arms of official military PR men, who mill around the Fort Meade press room like over-eager sales assistants. The management of Bradley Manning’s case will not stop at the limits of the courtroom. It has already been revealed that the Pentagon is closely monitoring press coverage and social media discussions on the case.

This is not justice; never could this be justice. The verdict was ordained long ago. Its function is not to determine questions such as guilt or innocence, or truth or falsehood. It is a public relations exercise, designed to provide the government with an alibi for posterity. It is a show of wasteful vengeance; a theatrical warning to people of conscience.

The alleged act in respect of which Bradley Manning is charged is an act of great conscience – the single most important disclosure of subjugated history, ever. There is not a political system anywhere on the earth that has not seen light as a result. In court, in February, Bradley Manning said that he wanted to expose injustice, and to provoke worldwide debate and reform. Bradley Manning is accused of being a whistleblower, a good man, who cared for others and who followed higher orders. Bradley Manning is effectively accused of conspiracy to commit journalism.

But this is not the language the prosecution uses. The most serious charge against Bradley Manning is that he “aided the enemy” – a capital offence that should require the greatest gravity, but here the US government laughs at the world, to breathe life into a phantom. The government argues that Bradley Manning communicated with a media organisation, WikiLeaks, who communicated to the public. It also argues that al-Qaeda (who else) is a member of the public. Hence, it argues that Bradley Manning communicated “indirectly” with al-Qaeda, a formally declared US “enemy”, and therefore that Bradley Manning communicated with “the enemy”.

But what about “aiding” in that most serious charge, “aiding the enemy”? Don’t forget that this is a show trial. The court has banned any evidence of intent. The court has banned any evidence of the outcome, the lack of harm, the lack of any victim. It has ruled that the government doesn’t need to show that any “aiding” occurred and the prosecution doesn’t claim it did. The judge has stated that it is enough for the prosecution to show that al-Qaeda, like the rest of the world, reads WikiLeaks.

“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people,” wrote John Adams, “who have a right and a desire to know.”

When communicating with the press is “aiding the enemy” it is the “general knowledge among the people” itself which has become criminal. Just as Bradley Manning is condemned, so too is that spirit of liberty in which America was founded.

In the end it is not Bradley Manning who is on trial. His trial ended long ago. The defendent now, and for the next 12 weeks, is the United States. A runaway military, whose misdeeds have been laid bare, and a secretive government at war with the public. They sit in the docks. We are called to serve as jurists. We must not turn away.

Free Bradley Manning.
