Book Review: “Return of the Dark/Light Mother or New Age Armageddon?” by Monica Sjöö

I’ve wanted to review this book for awhile, but reading it kept triggering me to pick up other reference books, so that this one book turned into reading about seven books! I finally finished it today. Monica Sjöö’s “Return of the Dark/Light Mother or New Age Armageddon?” is called “New Age and Armageddon: The Goddess or the Gurus” in its UK edition. Both versions carry the subtitle, “Towards a Feminist Vision of the Future.” With those titles, one might conclude that Sjöö enters the book with a full-on agenda; however, the book itself raises more questions than it answers. At relatively equal parts memoir, grief work (processing the deaths of her two sons), feminist polemic, Goddess celebration, Earth manifesto, sacred site pilgrimage, and apocalyptic warning, Return of the Dark/Light Mother is actually very difficult to pin down.

Sjöö presents a well-researched, sometimes shocking look at the cultural appropriation, racism, patriarchal and imperialistic attitude and actions of many New Age messages and gurus. I found her analyses articulated the discomfort and occasional outrage I’ve felt when reading channeled material or hearing New Age platitudes, as well as through observing in private sessions with clients just how much damage New Age thought has caused some lovely, sincere and good-hearted people. I have never felt comfortable with the “instant shaman just add water” nature of so many New Age books and trainings, and I, too, have noticed how much of the channeled material supports passivity and denial in the face of a looming military industrial complex and international globalist New World Order.

I often wonder if we would be at our current level of police state in the US if so many New Agers hadn’t believed all the luv-n-lite messages claiming Obama was a “higher dimensional ET” here to “save the world,” or if so many Americans could turn a blind eye to the devastation we wreak in the Middle East, Africa and Central America if certain interpretations of the Law of Attraction didn’t convince otherwise compassionate (and maybe otherwise active?) people that the victims of US bombings and invasions had “attracted” such things by “negative thought forms.” Sjöö provides much documentation to support these and other critiques.

Return of the Dark/Light Mother was first published in 1991 and then updated in 1999. Even so, reading it in 2015 reveals it as a highly (and scarily) prophetic book. Sjöö raises alarms about GMOs, transhumanism, the encroaching police state, CIA infiltration of the New Age movement, and — a major focus of her book — New Agers’ continued (sometimes subtle, often overt) patriarchal war on women and matter, including a disregard for our home planet as damaged, 3D or low vibration, or otherwise lesser than the “Sons of Light,” atomic bombs (yes, this was a shocking and well documented New Age guru celebration throughout the book), some kind of ET/Sun/Light Savior(s), and/or a group of “Masters” controlling Earth and humanity from behind the scenes, off world or inside the Earth. Indeed, a major reason I looked for a book like Return of the Dark/Light Mother stemmed from my own alarm at the disregard for our planet in favor of “Ascension,” as though none of the poisoning or attacks on our planet matter, because we’ll all be whisked away … in 2000, in 2001, in 2012, in March 2013, in …. um, hey, what if that doesn’t happen? Shouldn’t we be cleaning up the poisons? Shouldn’t we be doing whatever we can wherever we are to stop GMO’s? Shouldn’t we be resisting free trade Trojan Horses like TPP and TTIP?  Shouldn’t we say no (loudly and with force) to more nuclear plants, patented body parts, and forced vaccinations?

I do hope that many people will take the time and considerable effort to read “Return of the Dark/Light Mother or New Age Armageddon?” It is the only book I know of and thus, the best book I can recommend, which addresses to this degree the insidious, controlling, dangerous, racist and highly patriarchal oppression masquerading as “Love,” “Light” and “Earth healing.” I especially resonated with Sjöö’s various discussions of ley lines and how the New Age fad of “healing” them or of “bringing the Light into sacred sites” needs further behind the scenes exploration to see whom or what is really instructing people to do such things. Exactly who is funding these New Age organizations, and how might their stated agenda really look if enacted? Sjöö asks many questions, many of which she admits to not knowing the answer. Taken as a group, though, along with the extensive quotes from early New Age leaders through the 1990’s, these questions, quotes and results do showcase some rather alarming trends — especially from the further vantage point of 2015.

Although I wish that anyone and everyone who even flirts with New Age ideas, channeling, natural healing and spiritual travel would read and study this book, I also need to admit that the book meanders. A lot. Monica’s personal journey of grieving and processing the deaths of her sons runs throughout the book, in nearly every chapter. On the one hand, this showcases the emotions and living into the grit and the darkness of life, not just putting a smile on things and spiritually bypassing our humanity. On the other hand, a lot of readers may not have the patience to wade through yet another version of her “process.” Unfortunately, or fortunately (it just is, like Life), this process informs some of the most astute and incisive points of the text. To skim through paragraphs in which she mentions “my son,” would mean missing enormous layers of value and insight. In many ways, Return of the Dark/Light Mother exemplifies the return of Monica Sjöö’s sons’ Dark/Light Mother, as she grieves, processes and nourishes herself back to life, often through mystical experiences at sacred sites.

A prolific visionary artist, Sjöö scatters black and white images of her artwork throughout the book, along with lengthy annotations describing the paintings, locations, experiences at the locations, public reactions to the paintings, and anything that inspired the images. Her work is phenomenal! It combines dolmens and sacred mounds with goddesses from diverse traditions as far apart as Africa, Ireland, and South America. The paintings offer visceral glimpses into the mystical realms and experiences that Sjöö can only approximate with words.

Clearly, she has a complex, deep, loving, and sometimes troubled relationship with the Goddess in all her many forms, but Sjöö remains a fierce advocate for all things Goddess throughout the book. This fierceness and clear slant may alienate male as well as female readers, because she clearly wants everyone to get spiritually back in touch with Mother Earth, and she clearly has her own ideas of how we should (or should not) go about such an endeavor. I largely agree with Sjöö, but even I sometimes found myself mumbling, “OK, OK, yeah, yeah…” only to find some new nugget or aha to remind me not to give into the temptation to skim. For all its overt patriarchy bashing, Return of the Dark/Light Mother is actually a quite subtle book. I will let Monica Sjöö speak to the subtleties she tries to parse:

“I believe in the power of thought and of thought-forms. I know the importance of meditation and visualisation. I believe in the reality of communication with the spirits, of the spiritworld and of reincarnation. I have experienced many times the oracular power of wells and of the sacred places of the Goddess. I do believe that we are indivisible and holistically whole. I believe that we must open our second sight and ‘see’ again. I believe that if we work with Earth’s places of power and Her evolutionary lights, we ourselves will be deeply affected and great changes will come about. I believe in synchronicity — as above, so below — and in multiple universes.

“Superficially, one might think that I have much in common with New Age thinking. But, as I have tried to show throughout this book, there are great differences indeed between being open to psychic changes on many levels and adopting the fundamentally reactionary, anti-Earth and anti-Goddess, patriarchal religious views of so many New Agers. I do not believe that they truly love Earth, our sorrowing Mother.

“I sense that we are having a mass near-death experience at this time…  Now is the time for all visionaries — women and men — to come to the aid of our ancient Earth Mother. We must struggle to make far-reaching changes politically and economically if we are to survive, and we must indeed also mediate worldwide and dream Her alive. …”

I would remind readers that Monica Sjöö wrote and revised this book pre-9/11, pre-2003 Iraq War, pre-Afghanistan, pre-unauthorized Libya invasion, pre-Monsanto becoming a household name, pre-BP Oil “spill,” pre-Fukushima, pre-NDAA, pre-TPP, and pre-Ukraine-Russia-NATO potential for WW3. While, like Monica, I seem superficially in favor of many New Age platitudes and ideas, like her, I recognize we need to heal our planet with direct action of cleaning up nuclear waste and pollution, not just “bringing Light down to Mt. Shasta” or reasserting control over the ley lines. We need to RESPECT Earth and all of her creatures and people, not insert some new patriarchal, top down CONTROL agenda “of the Light.” Important things like gestation, sleep and dreams occur in the dark. As I’ve said before, all light, all the time is just as destructive (maybe even more so) as too much darkness. Reading how New Age leader after leader actively celebrated the atomic bomb and the idea of nuclear war as a great liberator from matter was an incredible wake-up call. I know that radiation mutates with a possibility of transmutation, but a religion/philosophy whose early founders repeatedly celebrated bombs as liberation from matter and heralded the blinding flash of an atomic explosion as the great Light should hopefully give us all pause. At least before we hit the self-destruct button.

If you read Return of the Dark/Light Mother, prepare to be challenged, intrigued and expanded. Then prepare to go back inside yourself and into Nature, to listen and observe, to hear and feel as humans once knew how to do. Remember and reconnect — not just with your mind, but with your precious body, made of Earth and Stars, influenced by the Moon, in harmony with earth, sea and sky. Thank you, Monica Sjöö for your beautiful heart and art and for your fierce devotion to our planet and the loving consciousness within Her.

Blessed Be.

After reading this blog [the Ken post, “The Rockefeller Plan for the BRICS New World Order, in their own words”] and digesting the information contained, I’m actually glad to be 69 years old, because the future seem’s unbearable knowing that we actually are living in the Orwellian nightmare that G.O. wrote so well of O’brien was right all along, but you wont see me at The Chestnut Tree.

I’m sorry to hear that exmatelot2014. I posted this because without permission of those who’ve been beating the BRICS drum, it will be much more difficult to enact this plan. It wasn’t intended as a prophecy that Orwell has already won, but rather a heads up to shift course now in order to avoid that fate. Ken’s ideas at the end of his article are very good — the importance of local community, local food sovereignty, local currency. These are not impossible suggestions, and as more and more communities do this, there will be less and less recognized need for central authority. Yes, it’s a long shot, but the energies of the times are with us. Humans just need to accept responsibility for their choices, as they will garner consequences (good or bad) either way. If you’re going to pay a price for something, might as well use it to buy what you actually want.

I have been following this thread with great interest. I know that some may find this crazy but I work with the Archangels on the evolution of the New Earth. Of course, in the human realm, things may seem bleak but i assure you that they are not. Only a tiny fraction of people need to be aware. All are being given the choice of upliftment, which for those who believe themselves to be powerless, is truly terrifying. Our most important asset at this time is our vibration. Please do not judge the new age “everything is groovy in love and light “people for they serve a vital function even if they do not want to recognize the New World Order. The Earth needs their vibration to be as high in frequency as possible and yours too. This goes beyond fears and threats and conspiracies. Some will move onward and upward and other will be like the deer in the headlights. This is the time of choice. The action we take whatever the back story. Yes, evil is afoot. But do we stop and get caught up in it or set our own course? Yes, things have been so intense that even the Archangels are too busy to meet with me and my work partner needing to postpone our working session. The situation is dynamic and volatile and yet, having viewed the massive divine intelligence at work and the planning for this time that preceeds Atlantis, I ask that we all transcend our defunct 3D mentality and move into our multidimensional, cocreative sovereignity.

Forget the Rockefellers. In the cosmos your thoughts and actions are of equal power to them. This is the time of instant karmic consequences. The world they created awaits them. I have chosen to move on to the new eden that is being created as we speak with our highest best Spirit of One vibration.
Let the Cabal reap what they have sown without us.

Thank you, Sally. You have very sweet energy. It is possible to have high vibration and still recognize the ugliness and challenges. It actually requires much greater light and a strong connection to Source to be able to walk in the muck and remain intact. True Love and True Light, grounded in actions and a connection to Earth, do have this power. Fluffy light that refuses to look at or integrate Shadows often gets consumed when the Shadows grow too large and demanding. I know this, because my work involves coaching or doing intuitive readings for people all over the world whose lives are spinning out of control because their watered down “love’n’lite” doesn’t hold up to the intense challenges of our times.

I’m not suggesting these people should ditch their high vibrations. They’ve already ditched them, because despair, overwhelm and betrayal have crept in. I’m suggesting people deepen their connection to both Spirit AND Soul, so that they can stand strong when the winds and rains come, not just when it’s sunny and warm. The Dark Night of the Soul is just as important a part of people’s journey as the peak Mountain Top Experience. Peak experiences are difficult to access when all hell breaks loose, but when one knows how to find the calm within the storm, when one knows how to BECOME both the storm AND the calm, THEN one can handle whatever uncertainty comes his or her way. And can also become a beacon of strength to those who cower in fear.

You have a good heart! Continued blessing on your journey. 🙂

[There are many more comments worth reading on all posts, but especially the past three posts, which have created much discussion and insight. As always, I appreciate the sincere, caring and open readers of this and other blogs. You are more powerful than you think. Remember to get those feelings involved, so you can transmute their raw energy to fuel what you’d most love to experience and create. Blessed Be! … And be the blessing.]

Why We Need the Sacred Feminine

This post has been rolling around in the hay and compost for awhile — decomposing, fermenting and recomposing into something that resembles dirt. Or soil. Nourishment for roots, fungi, worms and souls. If that sounds distasteful to you, then you might not like this post, and I’m OK with that. But I cannot, in good conscience, say nothing, so here goes, in no particular order, because sometimes messy, sullied, unruly, damp and slimy provide exactly what standardized artificial fertilizers, synthetic UV lights, rationality and endless iterations of patriarchal straightjackets fail to deliver. Here goes.

Take a mainstream media source, any mainstream media source, male or female. Now take an alternative media source — go ahead, there’s a lot to choose from: Alex Jones, Jon Rappoport, David Icke, Zero Hedge, David Wilcox, Benjamin Fulford, Jeff Rense … and many more. Take a politician, any politician, male or female, including Hillary “Takes Glee in Having Defended a Man She Knew Raped a 12-Year-Old Girl” Clinton. Take a music video, fashion runway, magazine, or Hollywood film. Now pick a fundamentalist offshoot of a religion (any one will do) — Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Jesuit, even the “Golden” “New Age” fundamentalists.

Regardless of intention or sincerity, what do such a diverse group of “representatives,” “mouthpieces” and “arbiters” all have in common?

A complete desecration or denial of the Sacred Feminine. If She’s not attacked, co-opted as a female figurehead, or corseted into the more socially accepted “Divine Feminine,” then she’s simply absent. Not available for comment. Three Monkeyed out of existence. I almost wrote “Sacred Famine-ine” … because it’s that dry and barren. Nary a Goddess in sight, except to mock, co-opt, demonize, sterilize, neutralize, or ridicule. I am sure at least some of these people sincerely wish good will upon humans and our planet, but with friends like these, who needs Thought Police? Who needs a carefully orchestrated One World Government and One World Religion when we’ve already eradicated the Creatrix Womb and such subversive, exuberant, and juicy birth canals? Who needs the Hidden Hand of a New World Order, Ordo Ab Chao, when we’ve already neutered or repressed all that “superstition,” “mindless ritual,” “emotion,” “false energy Matrix” and “ridiculous”/”evil” magick?

Haven’t you heard? The Light of “Reason” or the Pure Light of the Golden Age of “Oneness” is on the verge of defeating and destroying all things dark, silly, irrational, unequal, evil and soulful. Haven’t you heard? The soul’s a “trap.” “They” will kindly remove and dispose of it to save you the trouble of reincarnating. Or emoting. You, too, can join the (non-hierarchical) ranks of never-ending Light. At first you’ll experience accelerated growth, but yeah, eventually, you’ll fry. That’s OK, though, because this is the “New” paradigm, the pinnacle of existence, the static “5D” nirvana of “Oneness.”

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, but….

What if Light is a force that enables clearer seeing, but like any force or tool, it depends on how it’s used? Light can illuminate or blind, just as fire can warm or destroy. Darkness, too, has its place. In the real world, important things take place in darkness. Like gestation. You know, in the womb. Or seeds, sprouting in the Earth. Or last year’s waste, turning into this year’s fertile compost. Light can sterilize and prevent infection, but “to sterilize” also means “to deprive (a person or an animal) of the ability to produce offspring, as by removing the reproductive organs” or “to make incapable of bearing fruit or germinating.”

A world of All Light, All the Time is no healthier and more fertile than a world consumed by Darkness. On the contrary. Light and Shadow play upon and through each other, showing depth and form. A world that demands and celebrates All Light, All the Time quickly becomes one dimensional. In the art world, chiaroscuro allows a two dimensional painting to reveal 3D form. This process happens due to the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. When you erase all shadows, you don’t “go 5D.” You go 1D. One dimensional. A single point. “Oneness,” yes, but with complete, permanent rejection of anything except light, you get annihilation, not increased dimensional options and creativity. That kind of radiation will eventually kill or sterilize everything.

“But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.”
― Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

“Oneness,” the “Cosmic Zero,” the “Stillpoint,” “One Love” — whatever you want to call it — is powerful because it contains All That Is in pure potential, but it’s also sterile without the impulse and ability to re-expand. That impulse to birth is inherently Feminine. And Sacred. The Great Mystery surrounds and imbues Creation. Indeed, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” something beyond pure mechanics. So is Life. (Or at least, certain types of Life.) Our Universe contains far more “dark matter” than scientists can explain. Our souls contain far more freedom than religion can detain. In Ancient Times, women isolated themselves during menstruation, not because it was dirty, but because the menstrual blood held so much power. Men needed protection from that potent, mysterious force of Nature.

I had originally planned to title this post “Desecration, Dimensions and Discernment: When ‘More’ Means ‘Fewer’ and ‘Less,'” but Gillian of Shift Frequency loved my almost typo: “Sacred Famine-ine.” I’ve settled upon “Why We Need the Sacred Feminine,” because most people seem to have forgotten that we do.

“A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”
― T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land

I’d like to make clear at this point that I have nothing against the Divine Feminine or Divine Masculine. We can certainly use more of those in our world; however, they are not, on their own, enough to create something entirely New.

We need the Sacred Masculine, too, but Sacred Masculine and Sacred Feminine are different in kind and function, as well as form. The Sacred Masculine can fertilize but He does not gestate. The patriarchy can desecrate seeds into GMO’s, inject nanobots and pervert DNA, but despite its obsessive efforts, it can never entirely control Creation. The ability to create and birth new life rightfully belongs to the realm of Mystery with a capital M. Conception, gestation and birth remain a process of the Sacred Feminine. The Sacred Masculine provides the spark of fertilization, plus strength, support and protection for the Sacred Feminine. Some kind of fertilization is necessary, but it is possible for the Great Mother to carry the New to term without the strength, support or protection of a Sacred Masculine. These qualities are nice, perhaps even preferred, but they are not inherently required. The Sacred Masculine, Divine Masculine and even the radiantly Divine Feminine cannot birth New Worlds into being anymore than a man or the external shell of a woman can grow and birth a baby.

Once the rebirth happens, the New can include the ongoing Cosmic Dance between Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine, as well as the Secret, Mysterious Communion of Sacred Masculine and Sacred Feminine. But we really need the Sacred Feminine in order to birth that New: if we want something truly New, rather than a shiny rehash of the crumbling old or complete annihilation, then me must honor and invoke the Great Creatrix.

OK, OK, but where can we find Her?

She hides and reveals Herself in Nature, shadows, chalices, coves and wells. She receives and allows reception. She rests in the Land Herself and in Ancient Songs and Ways. The Fae honor and adore Her. The Soul recognizes Her. We love Her as we embrace the Sovereignty of Land and Soul.

James Gilliland ~ A New Age Denial and Death Sentence

Thanks to Mary for sending this my way. It goes right along with the series of posts here, here and here, along with many others. Wake up, get grounded, take action. Lather, rinse, repeat. As James says, “[D]rop the denial, the mind control, the spiritual ego and get busy we have a planet to turn around. It is time for right thinking, right action, right living, impeccable integrity and to stand in your own divinity leading yourself from your own heart and soul.”

A New Age Denial And Death Sentence
by James Gilliland

I wish I did not have to resort to writing such an article yet so many are becoming willing participants in their own, their families and friends demise. Yes this includes the demise of nature as well the very platform for life. Much of this stems from new age teachings which were generated from Stanford Research Institute and other groups working with mind control and steering the masses. The be lie f that everything is an illusion and does not really matter is like saying all of Creation is worthless, a mistake and of no value. The other program is if you see evil it is within you therefore do not address, look upon or give any energy whatsoever to evil it is just a judgment anyway. The problem with these two ideologies is one you have a physical body and are subject to what happens in your physical environment. Good point is if the environment collapses and can no longer support life there goes your 3d expression. Friends, family, lovers, all of it. If the environment is polluted and you breath the air, drink the water and ingest the food you are not exempt. This 3d expression is just a[s] Holy as all the other dimensions and should be treated as such. What you do in this dimension will weigh light or heavy in the soul on other dimensions as well. There will be a major reality check in your light review upon leaving this dimension.

The problem with denying the presence of evil is it goes unchecked with no resistance consuming everyone and everything until it consumes itself. That is its nature. These two ideologies are a fast track to extinction concerning this 3d physical reality again which just another expression of the divine, which seems to have been hijacked from its original design. If you believe all is well I have to point out the condition of your society, those who govern it and your environment. Lets look at the Gulf Oil Spill, Fukushima, Chemtrails spraying aluminum, barium and strontium at levels sometimes 60 times over the hazardous levels established by the EPA. Lets look at the GMO crops that are neutering and in many cases eventually killing those who consume them. Lets look at the lack of jobs, the loss of homes, the gross uneven dispersal of wealth. Lets look at just who this 1% who are running the world have created. Lets look at the wars, the depleted uranium spread far and wide, not just in the Middle East but in our troops. Is 25 suicides a day acceptable in the military? Is leveling an entire city bombing them into the stone age to free them, killing, men, women, children in the millions acceptable? Which God is in favor of this? As a country how can a country with any humanity left condone this. Do I need to address torture condoned at the very top, drones killing indiscriminately men women and children who made the mistake of having a relative on the hit list, double tapping the strikes to take out the relief workers and first responders giving life saving help? Do you really think decent human beings are responsible for these inhuman acts.

If they are not acting humanely who are these inhuman leaders? Why on earth can anyone turn a blind eye, ignore and support this and still call themselves a decent human being. How can leaders in the religious and spiritual communities profess to be in service, a master teacher by professing they are above all this telling their followers to not engage and ignore what is obviously pure evil. The new age philosophy, it is all illusion and we cannot perceive and address evil, is one of the many ways this evil has progressed to a level where it is going to take a cataclysmic event to dethrone it.

Personally I have spent over 35 years dedicated to the awakening and healing of humanity and the earth. I have studied with Yogis, Lamas, Leading edge Scientists, healers from all over the world and not one denies the physical and what is happening to humanity and the earth. So how is it enlightened and intelligent to ignore the pain and suffering of others along with the collapse of the environment, the very platform for life? It is smug arrogance and ignorance, mind controlled spiritual ego to continue in these perpetuated doctrines.

When the slanderous attacks come for addressing these problems be clear you are only establishing your own ignorance and character. You are waving the I am totally mind controlled and don’t give a shit about anyone else banner. Yet this will have consequences because we do live in an action/reaction world, you do have a physical body and will be subject to the destiny of this physical world. It will also be very clear in your awakening or in your light review when you leave this physical body when you could have helped and did not. Despite you[r] ideologies. So drop the denial, the mind control, the spiritual ego and get busy we have a planet to turn around. It is time for right thinking, right action, right living, impeccable integrity and to stand in your own divinity leading yourself from your own heart and soul. The neutered, zombie, mind controlled robot worker is not an option and do not fool yourself into thinking the 1% have any other goal than the obvious. It is said a man/womans character is established by their actions. Forget about what is said, focus on what is done. Be well,

James Gilliland
