Natural News ~ 37 Lies Americans Tell Themselves to Avoid Confronting Reality

If you’re not American, consider that many of these lies cross over into other languages and Western cultures.

37 Lies Americans Tell Themselves to Avoid Confronting Reality
By Mike Adams

(NaturalNews) Have you noticed the incredible detachment from reality exhibited by the masses these days? The continued operation of modern society, it seems, depends on people making sure they don’t acknowledge reality (or try to deal with it). “Denial” is what keeps every sector of civilization humming along: medicine, finance, government, agriculture and more.

The trouble with the denial approach is that eventually the lies collide with reality. Until that day comes, however, happy-go-lucky Americans are merrily enjoying their courtship with self delusion, repeating the following 37 lies to themselves as if they were true:

Lie #1) All FDA-approved medications are safe to consume in any combination, because the FDA protects the public.

Lie #2) Food prices keep going up because inflation is a natural force that can’t be halted.

Lie #3) The mainstream media is telling me the truth when it reports on world events.

Lie #4) Chemical food additives are tested for their safety before being widely used across the food supply.

Lie #5) We can all pump groundwater out of the ground forever, and it will never run out.

Lie #6) We can also pump fossil fuels out of the ground forever, and they will never run out, either. Why worry?

Lie #7) If anything bad happens in terms of a national emergency or natural disaster, the government will take care of me.

Lie #8) It doesn’t matter where my food comes from as long as it’s cheap and delicious.

Lie #9) GMOs must be safe to eat because a bunch of scientists paid by the biotech industry all tell each other that GMOs are safe and therefore have reached “scientific consensus.”

Lie #10) Government debt doesn’t matter because the government can simply create more money any time they want.

Lie #11) Mercury in vaccines must be safe to inject into children, otherwise the CDC and FDA wouldn’t allow it to be used in vaccines.

Lie #12) Organic produce is a waste of money. I’ll buy conventional produce treated with pesticides and herbicides because the cost of all the cancer treatments I’ll need 20 years later will be covered by Obamacare anyway.

Lie #13) The history taught to children in public schools is a true and accurate history. Columbus was best friends with the Indians, too!

Lie #14) Swallowing fluoride chemicals is good for babies and children, and that’s why cities put fluoride into public water supplies.

Lie #15) Flu shots prevent the flu. That’s why the package inserts for flu vaccines openly state there is no scientific evidence to support any conclusion that influenza vaccines prevent influenza.

Lie #16) Whatever is backed by “science” must be true. Science is never falsified by corrupt scientists or corporate agendas, and scientific conclusions are never wrong.

Lie #17) The global ecosystem can handle unlimited human pollution without any negative consequences. We can all continue to dump unlimited toxins into the environment.

Lie #18) Cell phone radiation is harmless. The reason we know that is because the cell phone companies hired scientists to say so.

Lie #19) If everybody else is doing something, it must be the right thing to do. After all, how could so many people be wrong?

Lie #20) We don’t need to store food for emergencies because there will always be more food available at the grocery store.

Lie #21) There’s no need to be concerned about Ebola or other infectious diseases in America because the vaccine companies can always and instantly create a new vaccine that works 100% of the time, with zero side effects.

Lie #22) Local police departments need battlefield military weapons, armored cars and body armor because the drug war demands it.

Lie #23) If I buy something at Whole Foods, it must be healthy and free from contaminants like toxic heavy metals. (Or is it really?)
Lie #24) My vote really counts in national elections. We live in a democracy where the People have power over the government.

Lie #25) My checking and savings accounts are perfectly safe no matter what happens because my bank is FDIC insured.

Lie #26) Raw dairy products are dangerous and deadly because the FDA told me so. Those horrible farmers selling raw dairy products should be locked away in prison.

Lie #27) My oncologist recommends chemotherapy treatment for me only because he cares about my wellbeing, not because his clinic sells the chemotherapy drugs at a huge profit.

Lie #28) The government isn’t secretly recording my phone calls or reading my emails. Why would they? I’ve done nothing wrong!

Lie #29) Commercial dog food is healthy and nutritious for dogs. Dog treats made in China are also trustworthy and free from contaminants like lead.

Lie #30) The only way to prevent infectious disease is with a vaccine. Vitamin D and healthy immune support have nothing to do with it.

Lie #31) After I pay off my house, I own it free and clear. (Think again: Property taxes mean you’re only “leasing” it from the county. Stop paying those taxes and you’ll find out very quickly who really owns your home.)

Lie #32) Google will do no evil, and the fact that the company is developing humanoid battlefield robots, autonomous drones and super-human quantum computing brain chips is nothing to worry about.

Lie #33) Cancer is caused entirely by bad luck (or smoking) and has nothing to do with the food I eat or chemicals in my personal environment.

Lie #34) The radiation release from Fukushima wasn’t that bad. Sure, it was many times larger than the Chernobyl disaster, but authorities say we have nothing to worry about.

Lie #35) Autism isn’t caused by vaccines, and the way we know is because the CDC scientist who admitted to a massive conspiracy of scientific fraud to bury the evidence linking vaccines to autism should not be believed.

Lie #36) All foods certified as “organic” are automatically free of toxic heavy metals and contaminants.

Lie #37) Human civilization is the only intelligent civilization in the entire galaxy. Anything else would simply be too scary to contemplate.

Protect Small Farmers and Non-irradiated Organic Food

As if Dick Durbin isn’t enough to contend with … here comes the FDA recycling an old, sneaky attempt to do away with small farms, fresh foods, raw foods and anything non-irradiated. Not for actual public safety, not with proof of danger … just a rogue “suspicion” is enough to shut down small farmers. Sounds like the equivalent of NDAA indefinite detention for farmers! Can you say “Codex Alimentarius?!” How obvious can they be?

In all seriousness, though, this same attempt was previously thwarted through petitions and phone calls. If you in any way value Farmer’s Markets, organic food, healthy DNA, and the last shreds of food sovereignty, please read below and take action. Again.

I’m all for a brand, spankin’ new paradigm, but as long as we’re quasi-functioning in this one, let’s protect real food and real farmers. The life you save may be your own, and no, that is not an exaggeration. Access to real food and clean water are way more important than the DOW or some silly bipartisan “initiative.” As George Carlin said, “Bipartisan usually means that a larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.”

To the FDA: you wouldn’t know real food if you slipped on an organic banana peel. Until you can stop pandering to Monsanto and the chemical companies, stop persecuting Amish farmers and start protecting organic family farmers, kindly remove your stinky a$$ from my plate. My local farmers and I feed ourselves much better than you and the phood fascists ever would.

OK, rant temporarily over. Important information and petition link below, and please act as you feel led:

What Does the Government Have Against Organic Farmers?

August 6, 2013
ANH Action Alert

Three years ago you won major concessions for small farmers. Now it’s all in danger. Action Alert!

When the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was originally proposed in 2010, we and many other organizations were troubled. Small-farm and organic food advocates warned that the legislation would destroy their industry under a mountain of paperwork and other requirements.

Working with the natural health community, ANH-USA helped win the inclusion of an amendment from Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Kay Hagan (D-NC), which exempted producers making less than $500,000 a year in sales who also sold most of their food locally. This wasn’t easy. Big farms and processed food companies and their allies at the USDA and FDA did not like it, because they feel threatened by competition from natural food producers.

Now, through the rulemaking process, the FDA is trying to change the law in such a way that the hard-won exceptions provided by the Tester-Hagan Amendment are endangered.

In January we reported that the FDA had proposed two troubling FSMA rules:

The first one concerned standards for the growing and harvesting of raw agricultural produce, and exempts foods that are sterilized by irradiation, even though “nuking” it harms the food’s nutritional value, can cause a wide range of health problems, and masks filthy conditions in slaughterhouses and food processing plants. Obviously, organic foods cannot be irradiated, so they will never be exempted.

The second amended the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) guidelines by creating hazards analysis requirements and risk-based protections with lots of detailed recordkeeping. Most farmers will likely need a team of lawyers to make sure they’re complying with the new rule properly.

Farmers who make less than $500,000 should be off the hook because of the Tester-Hagan Amendment, right? No! At the last minute, a provision was added to the FSMA allowing the FDA to revoke the exemption for small farms or facilities under specific conditions.

And now, new FDA rules interpret those conditions in a way that completely undermines the intent of the Tester-Hagan amendment. The FDA now gets to revoke the exemption if a foodborne illness outbreak might possibly be linked to the farm, even if there is no proof that the farm is the cause of the outbreak, and even though there may not be an immediate threat to public health!

Laura again: Much more information here. Please do take action on this one. The proposed restrictions to farmers and the fascist powers granted to the FDA are truly absurd and terrifying if we cower to them. Personally, I prefer a swift boot to the butt. “Oh, now go. Walk out the door. Just turn around now. You’re not welcome anymore.”

NYC allows doctors to prescribe fresh fruit and vegetables as treatment for obesity; FDA declares veggies ‘unapproved drugs’

It was the sanest of times; it was the insanest of times. I am proud to live in a county where the Sheriff stands up to the FDA, but it’s really encouraging to hear about doctors and politicians putting the Big Apple back into NYC. Here’s Mike Adams with the good, the bad, and the ridiculous:

NYC allows doctors to prescribe fresh fruit and vegetables as treatment for obesity; FDA declares veggies ‘unapproved drugs’

(NaturalNews) These days, it’s difficult to find examples of government doing anything that makes sense. That’s all the more reason why a program embraced by New York City is newsworthy. Dubbed the “Fruit and Vegetables Prescription Program,” it allows doctors to “prescribe” fresh fruit and vegetables to overweight or obese patients by giving them “Health Bucks” that are redeemable at local farmer’s markets.

See the announcement of this program at the Wholesome Wave website.

This program makes New York City the largest U.S. city to officially acknowledge that fruits and vegetables have a role to play in preventing chronic degenerative disease — an idea that the FDA insists is delusional. According to the FDA, there is no such thing as any fruit, vegetable, supplement or superfood that has any ability whatsoever to prevent, treat or cure any disease.

Sure, the FDA’s belief is ancient history in terms of present-day knowledge about nutrition and disease, but it’s still federal policy. And according to the FDA, the mere “prescribing” of a food as something to prevent obesity automatically transforms that food into a “drug.” Under current FDA regulations, then, NYC is guilty of promoting “unapproved drugs” which are really just fruits and vegetables. But that’s how FDA logic works.

NYC officials invest in nutrition to prevent disease

New York doesn’t seem to be letting the FDA’s outdated delusions stop it from pursuing the “Fruits and Vegetables Prescription Program,” however. Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs and Health Commissioner Thomas Farley announced the program last week, and by all accounts the program has been met with widespread approval. It allows families that are prescribed the Health Bucks to redeem them for fresh produce at over 140 New York City farmer’s markets.

As WFEV reports:

Bronx resident Tammy Futch said her family has seen positive changes since starting the program.

“My son lost 40 pounds behind this program,” she said, “and also I lost weight doing it with him and also I have my other kids, I have four other kids also doing the program.”

The Prescription Program was started by Wholesome Wave in 2011 and has since been expanded to seven states.

Natural News endorses the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program

For the record, all of us here at Natural News openly endorse this program, and we think it needs to be vastly expanded. To understand why, let’s talk about the role of government and food stamps for a moment.

Right now, 100+ million Americans are on some form of federal food aid. Much of that is through the USDA’s “SNAP” program, often called “food stamps” even though that’s not the official name anymore.

The SNAP program is nothing more than a big government handout to junk food manufacturers and soda companies. That’s because food stamp money can be spent on all the processed junk foods and sodas that make people sick and diseased with conditions like diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease and more. Through SNAP, the federal government is subsidizing the foods that cause sickness! Obviously, this also drives up health care costs and deeply harms the overall U.S. economy.

What if we took the federal SNAP program and turned the entire thing into the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program?

What I mean here is to shift the SNAP program so that all processed junk foods are disallowed. Update the rules so that SNAP funds can only be used to buy fresh produce and a few basic staples such as rice, oats, beans, salt and so on.

All of a sudden, you’d see a nationwide shift away from disease and toward vastly improved health. Disease rates would plummet, but so would the share prices of junk food companies like PepsiCo, Kraft and Coca-Cola. You’d also see lower rates of chronic degenerative disease, and this would hurt the profits of the all-powerful drug companies, hospitals and cancer industry profiteers. For these reasons, the food and medicine lobby will incessantly pressure the USDA to make sure SNAP continues to keep Americans sick and diseased. After all, billions of dollars in profits are at stake here, and the drug companies have a powerful lobby.

So don’t expect the feds to do anything other than keep poisoning America through SNAP. That’s the purpose of the program, it seems: to sicken the population and trap Americans in a never-ending cycle of medical dependence while enriching the drug companies.

Cities can succeed where the federal government fails

But on a city-by-city basis, forward-thinking people are starting to fight back against the “industry of death” offered by the USDA and its junk food subsidy programs. That’s why New York City deserves a lot of credit for this particular program: it’s investing taxpayer money directly into the health of people who are on the verge of becoming huge financial burdens on the health care system.

See, for every dollar you spend subsidizing real nutrition in the population — fresh fruits, vegetables or superfoods — you’ll probably save $10 or more in averted health care costs over the long term. Healthy foods are a fantastic investment because they’re cheap to buy but extremely valuable in terms of the lifesaving medicines they provide.

Blueberries, for example, contain natural medicines that help prevent heart disease:
http://science.naturalnews.com/pubmed/20660279.html

Broccoli contains natural medicines that help prevent cancer:
http://science.naturalnews.com/B/Broccoli_and_cancer.html

Tomatoes are very well documented to help prevent prostate cancer:
http://science.naturalnews.com/T/tomato_and_prostate_cancer.html

And turmeric root, often used in curries, is well known to be a powerful treatment for breast cancer:
http://science.naturalnews.com/C/Curcumin_and_breast_cancer.html

See the entire list of foods and their health benefits at the new SCIENCE.naturalnews.com website:
http://science.naturalnews.com/index-Foods_and_Ingredients.html

Because of all the astounding health benefits of foods, a typical farmer’s market is a treasure chest of natural medicines that can prevent and reverse cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and much more. It is only because of monopolistic, oppressive FDA policies that the entire medical profession isn’t already “prescribing” fresh produce to prevent degenerative disease.

This is how we beat the federal death sentence: City by city, state by state, prescribing nutrition to prevent disease

Personally, I find it fascinating that NYC is the place where this is happening right now. NYC is normally a pro-big-government city, meaning they should worship the FDA-endorsed idea of feeding everybody chemical medications and junk foods while attacking nutrition and outlawing health claims.

But that’s not what we’re seeing here. With this program, NYC is actually taking a stand against FDA tyranny and the federal government’s “death subsidy” program called SNAP. Perhaps NYC realizes it’s headed the way of Detroit if doesn’t get its long-term health care costs under control. After all, a city that lives on processed food and prescription medications is a city that will inevitably collapse from “disease care” bankruptcy. And right now across America’s largest 61 cities, future health care entitlements are only funded at 6 cents on the dollar.

Perhaps there are enough smart New Yorkers still in charge to realize the only way to have a healthy city is to have healthy people. And that means finding creative ways to get people to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables rather than pigging out on nutrient-depleted junk foods. The easiest solution to all this is to just hand out vouchers for fresh produce, effectively giving them to the population for free.

The two areas where government has a legitimate role in handing out benefits

That’s why I think every city in the nation would be smart to implement this program. Although I don’t like the overall idea of any government running around hanging money out to people, this is one exception where it actually makes sense.

In fact, I’ve always believed there are TWO areas where the government has a legitimate role in subsidizing the public:

1) NUTRITION – Fresh produce, superfoods and food-based supplements and non-pasteurized concentrates. Government handouts of nutrition actually save the taxpayers money in long-term health care costs.

2) EDUCATION – A college degree should be a “pay it forward” agreement from one generation to the next. No student who qualifies for a college or university should be denied that education simply because they cannot afford it.

These are smart investments that create a healthier, more prosperous society. But instead of subsidizing these two things, we have exactly the opposite at the federal level: a government that subsidizes junk foods while attacking nutrition. Remember: it is the official position of the FDA that anyone who sells a lemon while claiming that lemon can help prevent scurvy is a dangerous criminal engaged in “drug crimes.”

The FDA’s war on fruits, vegetables and nutrition

The FDA warning letters website is full of examples of this, where the agency accuses nutrition companies of selling “unapproved new drugs” simply because they attempt to describe the health benefits of those supplements.

For example, on this warning letter page, the FDA accuses a company called Naturecast Products of selling “unapproved new drugs” because their website described the benefits of chromium on blood sugar:

Chromium helps regulate blood sugar levels by collaborating with insulin in facilitating the uptake of glucose into the cells. If chromium is not present, insulin’s action is blocked and blood sugar levels are elevated. Insulin is secreted in response to the rise in blood glucose levels after the consumption of a meal. Insulin functions by increasing the rate that glucose is taken up by the cells and the [sic] lowers blood glucose levels.

The fact that chromium really does help regulate blood sugar levels is well established in the scientific literature, including in this study:
http://science.naturalnews.com/pubmed/20306473.html

But the FDA pays no attention to scientific facts. Instead, the agency says that ANY claim, validated or otherwise, automatically transforms a food or supplement into an “unapproved new drug.” And for this reason, Americans are kept in the dark about the scientifically-verified health benefits of nutrients, foods, phytochemicals and dietary supplements.

This is by design. The FDA wants to keep the American people ignorant and sick so that Big Pharma can sell them more drugs and vaccines. The FDA is, in effect, the marketing branch of Big Pharma. It uses its regulatory power not to serve America’s interests, but to crush America’s knowledge of nutrition and health. This is a Dark Ages policy that’s causing untold harm to America.

More cities need to stand up to the FDA’s tyranny

Today even NYC has run afoul of the FDA’s absurd position that foods have no role in human health, but this is precisely what America needs today: a local revolt against federal ignorance about the relationship between food and health.

While the federal SNAP program drives Americans into disease, cities and states need to embrace fruit-and-vegetable programs that can help pull Americans out of the death spiral of junk foods and medications.

And that’s why NYC sets a shining example in this particular case, demonstrating what other cities need to follow if they hope to survive the disastrous collapse of health now emerging across America.

We here at Natural News applaud the efforts by NYC officials to prescribe fruits and vegetables as treatments for disease, and we encourage other cities to join in this effort that pays huge dividends in terms of public health and “sick care” cost savings.

Stop the FDA Power Grab

I received the following notification via email yesterday and wanted to spread the word. While I always believe there’s more than one solution to any problem, this particular compromise feels viable. For those of you who don’t know, this power grab is based on the 1992 Codex Alimentarius, which hopes to cause millions of deaths via preventable malnutrition and gazillions of profits for BigPharma. The powers that were are soooo desperate to prevent Ascension by any and all means, especially by regulating what we can or can’t put into our bodies. GMO’s=good; real food and time honored remedies=very, very bad! You are what you eat, and they would prefer you eat only what they’ve designed and determined will keep you down.

If you think the FDA could never manage to eliminate all supplements introduced since 1994, please realize that this very situation did happen in the EU on May 1, 2011. It is now illegal to grow peppermint in the EU! Any herb, natural remedy, tea, vitamin, etc. that has shown any kind of treatment potential must pay huge fees to be “regulated” or become illegal. This was a huge assault on health freedom in the EU, and the same behind the scenes BigPharma and NWO creeps continue to try to find a way to push this through in the US.

Getting fixated on this “problem” won’t solve it. “Worrying is like praying for what you don’t want.” However, I do believe in a multilevel approach that combines Law of Attraction (focus on what you do want) combined with practical action — like signing a petition, beginning a local food sovereignty movement, and/or educating your legislators. I’ve found that many legislators only hear from lobbyists. When concerned citizens begin to reveal other sides to the corporate agenda, some well-meaning legislators actually shift positions. The lobbyists are just too darned good at convincing them that citizens need protection from anything and everything except the wolves in sheep’s clothing the lobbyists represent.

In any case, please inform yourself below, take whatever action you feel led to take, and spread the word. Many thanks! And now … I’m back to envisioning my permaculture haven in a free world of enlightened beings who sungaze, smile, LOVE and generally rejoice in our beautiful planet and beautiful life!

THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN

Why H.R.3380 is our only means now to stop the FDA’s Vitamin Grab

By Scott C. Tips

February 7, 2012

If the Food and Drug Administration has its way, thousands of supplements will be removed from store shelves. We’ve heard this cry before, but this time it is very true. Supplements that you and I might take for granted – like resveratrol, L-GABA, curcumin, bioperine, and many more – which have not hurt a soul but only helped the health of millions, are slated for oblivion because the outlaw FDA thinks that it alone can decide whether they are safe or not. It might seem like a joke, but the FDA is dead serious.

Ignoring the law passed by Congress back in 1994, the FDA wants all new dietary ingredients (i.e., those on the market from October 15, 1994 on) to jump through regulatory hoops that Congress never intended for them. More specifically, the FDA’s draft Guidance for Industry on New Dietary Ingredients (issued last July) would subject these “new” supplements to expensive, drug-like testing requirements for safety that will effectively eliminate thousands of supplements because it simply will not be cost-effective for companies to spend the millions of dollars on each dietary-supplement ingredient. Sales will not justify the expense and the products will be dropped like hot potatoes.

The NHF’s Answer

Immediately upon hearing the news last July about the FDA’s latest power grab, the National Health Federation (NHF) decided that the FDA should get a taste of its own medicine. Through the astute work of NHF’s lobbyist Lee Bechtel in Washington, D.C., that reflexive thought has taken substance in the form of a new bill introduced last October in the House of Representatives by freedom-oriented Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN). Called the “Dietary Supplement Protection Act” (H.R.3380), the DSPA moves the defining date of October 15, 1994, to a more realistic and recent date of January 1, 2007. In this one simple act, the bill encompasses within that previous grandfathering clause all of the “new” dietary-supplement ingredients that have appeared in that 13-year interval and that would otherwise be subject to the onerous requirements of the FDA Guidance.

Of course, NHF wanted a later date as the new grandfathering date. But the legislators pointed out that January 1, 2007, could be logically tied to the starting dates for the Adverse-Event Reporting (AER) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) start dates. Their arguments in support of H.R.3380 are that the old 1994 grandfather date should no longer apply since supplements are both safer and more accountable under the AER and GMP rules and regulations.

To be honest, H.R.3380 is not a panacea for all of the problems found in the FDA’s draft Guidance. But then it was never meant to be. Instead, it is a politically expedient “salami slice for freedom” that will take care of our FDA problem for now. Later, the problem will need to be addressed again; but, it does buy us valuable time right now and it will set a precedent for future legislative action.

This is the most realistic and pragmatic approach to tackling a large part of this FDA usurpation of our health rights that would otherwise occur were its draft Guidance to be put into effect. The anti-supplement and anti-health forces have been salami-slicing their way into our rights for years now. It is about time that we turned that strategy right back on them in order to keep our health rights.

Others’ Answers

Unfortunately, except for the National Health Freedom Coalition, National Health Freedom Action, and the Texas Health Freedom Coalition, which have thrown their support behind H.R.3380, the dietary-supplement industry and trade organizations and other health-freedom organizations have done nothing but sit on the fence. Where are the heroes of the early 1990s who led the mass charge to pass DSHEA?

Most of them are busy negotiating with the FDA! Can you believe it? The FDA could trot out the most rotten and odious piece of garbage and most players in the industry want to sit down with the FDA and figure out how to sprinkle perfume on it so that the rest of us will accept it! We have said this many times before and we will say it again: If it is garbage, then it is garbage and no amount of perfume will change it. Put it in the garbage can where it belongs!

Besides, negotiating with the FDA will at best only result in cosmetic changes. The essence of the FDA’s outlaw actions will remain and a precedent set for the FDA to take even more drastic action against supplements in the future.

A few others have called for the FDA to withdraw its draft Guidance. Even the NHF, in its comments submitted to the FDA last December, urged the FDA to withdraw the Guidance. But we could never really hope that the FDA would ever be enlightened enough to voluntarily withdraw its prized Guidance. After all, this is its chance to help its pharmaceutical-industry friends by squelching supplements and the competitive threat they pose to drugs.

Similarly, the Hatch-Harkin letter written to the FDA and asking it to withdraw the draft Guidance has failed. While we salute Senators Hatch and Harkin for their noble efforts to promote freedom and help all of us, the FDA has done its predicted stalling routine and politely declined to withdraw its draft Guidance.

Those organizations such as the Natural Products Association and the Council for Responsible Nutrition, who are hanging their hats on this Hatch-Harkin letter, will be disappointed. What then?

The Only Answer

So, negotiations with the FDA will not result in anything except, perhaps, cosmetic changes – fresh lipstick on a very ugly pig. The Hatch-Harkin demand letter, too, will fail. All of these industry and health-freedom players will slowly wake up to the fact that we pointed out long ago: H.R.3380 is the only answer, the only game in town, that has a hope of succeeding. But, for it to succeed, we all need to pull together to get it passed.

H.R.3380 now has three sponsors/cosponsors. It needs more. If the trade and other organizations supposedly representing your interests are too slow to take action, then those of you reading this need to give them all an appropriate kick in the butt to get behind this important bill. Now. We need more co-sponsors, we need more groundswell of support. And if we do not pass it, then the FDA will succeed. You and I will lose thousands of vitamin-and-mineral supplements that we have come to rely upon. It’s time for action, not cowardice.

During a telephone call I initiated with the past Director of the Natural Products Association, I pled for NPA’s support of H.R.3380. Amazingly, he told me that “some members” were concerned that H.R.3380 might “open up” DSHEA and result in unfavorable changes to that law. I told him that was cowardice and that DSHEA was being “opened up” anyway by our opponents each and every year regardless. Were we to cower in a corner, wringing our hands in fear, while our opponents continued to salami-slice our freedoms away? Or rather should we not stand up and take decisive action of our own? He had no answer.

NHF does have an answer and a decisive plan for action that we are enacting every day. We hope and trust that you agree with us, that you will take action now to write Congress, to persuade your friends, family members and organizations, to get off their knees and out of that corner. It is time now to speak with a united voice to our servants in Congress, to remind them that the FDA is our servant and not our master, and that the FDA cannot take away our health simply to serve the money interests of its puppet masters.

Food Sovereignty Law Email Template

Please feel free to copy and modify this email for your federal, state and local representatives. I just sent it to everyone who represents me in Wisconsin, but I thought I’d share in case others want to make their voices heard, too. I believe anyone informed of this issue would want food sovereignty laws in their town and/or state; however, very few people, including those who represent us, have any idea how we feel. Here’s my letter, customized for WI:

Thank you for your service to the State of Wisconsin! I am writing to let you know that I support food sovereignty laws like those on the books in Marin County, California and Maine. Genetically Modified Foods (GM or GMO’s) present an increasing threat to our health, economy, freedom and safety. Monsanto uses intimidation, bullying and monopolizing tactics similar to the mafia. Do we really want them providing GM seeds that will then contaminate organic crops and allow Monsanto to sue WI family farmers for “patent infringement,” while simultaneously ruining their livelihood?

I am also concerned about the likelihood of a major famine, if we continue to allow monocrops and things like Roundup, which has been shown as a factor in the declining honey bee population. Without bees, natural pollination will be crippled. Roundup (a weedkiller) has also been found in trace amounts in commercially sold compost, with the effect of people’s gardens dying via “fertilizing agents.”

Monocrops present another threat, as they are prone to infestation or crop failure due to weather or other conditions. Having just one strain of any given food makes it more likely to have something destroy the delicate conditions necessary for growth. With everything else going on in the world right now, including rising food prices, do we really want to worry about monocrop failures, too?

On top of this, recent studies about GM foods show that some cause infertility and obesity. The DNA modifications used to make these “Frankenfoods” do not stop modifying once they leave the laboratory, yet federal law does not require labeling of GM foods. The idea is that consumers might avoid them if they knew things were genetically modified. I say, give consumers a choice! I also say, please keep Monsanto out of Wisconsin. Please support food sovereignty laws that allow your constituents to choose organic, healthy foods instead of laboratory created, DNA-altering, obesity producing pseudofoods that will ultimately cost WI citizens more money for health care, as well as put them at greater risk for famine.

In addition, WI is a key state for organic dairy, and the introduction of GM alfalfa here would contaminate organic alfalfa plants, thereby ruining organic dairy. (You are what you eat. If organic cows start eating GM’d alfalfa, they will soon become GM cows. Where does it stop?) The so-called Food Safety Law S510 does not protect consumers. Instead it gives the FDA rights to intimidate and attack natural health stores, small farmers, sellers of raw dairy (a known healing food), and anyone not in the pockets of the big pharmaceutical companies and other lobbyists.

Today’s population has become increasingly educated about natural remedies and higher quality food choices. Please allow your constituency to make educated choices, rather than selling us out to some company’s agenda. I also would request you to fight against the implementation of a special food tax that pays for the Food Safety Law S510. A better, more sustainable, consumer-friendly solution would be to repeal the law or make it invalid within the state of WI. Please support our freedom to choose what we put into our bodies.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Laura Bruno
