Summer Solstice, Astrology and Earth Changes

Happy Summer Solstice to everyone in the Northern Hemisphere! (And Happy Winter Solstice to my readers in the Southern Hemisphere!) May the light of clarity continue to dawn and shine, both inside and outside ourselves. I’ve noticed clarity as a major theme in recent sessions, so I thought I’d make a special post about some upcoming space alignments, along with an update on Uranus in Taurus.

Even if you don’t believe in astrology, the following video shares physical Earth effects of a very rare planetary alignment we’ll experience from July 19th-early September. The lead-up has begun, with all the gas giants already on one side of the Sun. As the creator of this video documents, “June 20, 2018: Over the past 125 years the earth has only been in this cosmic planetary position 6 times, during each of those six times some historic events occurred on the planet with regard to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. https://www.mrmbb333.com

I include the video not to generate fear but as background to the individual and collective astrological effects/observations I note below the video. As Above, So Below. As Within, So Without. Everything connects. Whether or not we recognize those connections, they still affect us:

On May 9, 2018, I posted “Uranus in Taurus: What I’m Noticing So Far,” because sessions indicated people already feeling the effects of Uranus shifting from Aries to Taurus on May 15th. Things continue to heat up on the collective level and especially for anyone whose natal chart receives exact aspects with Uranus in early Taurus. You are much more than your Sun sign, so even non-Taureans can experience huge lightning (aka “lightening”) strikes from the rebel liberator, cosmic weirdo Uranus. Continue reading

More comments that really need their own post … in response to Paradox, Illusions and Unconditional Love:

Good read, thank you. Not sure about having to do our inner work before taking action though. I think the two could go hand-in-hand. Combining action in the ‘real’ world with our personal inner clean up might just create some kind of synergistic boost inceasing effectiveness of both endeavors simultaneously. Indeed, as within, so without.

Thanks to everyone who commented, and Mary, I agree. There’s no time to waste!

Thanks Mary and Laura you are right about the time being no, if I gave the impression that one must do all personal work prior to participating, I didn’t mean to. My intention was that it needed to be done hand in hand. I don’t see how one can not be accomplished without the other. Hope that’s clearer.

correction…time being NOW.

Posted by laurabruno on November 30, 2013 at 9:51 pm edit

🙂 Thanks for clarifying, Dawn! One of the greatest challenges I see all the time during intuitive sessions with individuals and also playing out on the larger world stage is this idea that we need to be perfectly healed ourselves before we can “presume” to offer any kind of healing to the world. Individuals who have various ailments but have wisdom to share shut themselves down, waiting until those symptoms disappear before they are willing to start living their truth or extending a helping hand to others. What many people don’t understand is that if your life path includes being a healer (and for many, many, many of us that’s true), then you will not ever experience full healing UNTIL you START offering whatever kind of healing you can right now, from where you are.

Law of Attraction and resonance can help to ensure that only those people you can help will cross your path or that you will know the resources to send someone else to in the event that you feel you have nothing to offer them. Many of us through networking can act as clearing houses for healing … but to wait … to assume that none of this would exist w/o our own un-healed parts and then paralyze actions that in and of themselves help to initiate our own and the worlds’ healing? Well, that’s why we’re in such a pickle on this planet! It’s a Catch 22, and it doesn’t need to be.

Sometimes we may fall short of an imaginary ideal or some kind of platitude of everything being nice and neat and clean, but sometimes a little grit and dirt are what get the job done. Sometimes it’s our flaws that allow the opening for conversation and the opportunities for healing. While I very much agree with many of the ideas of Unity and Oneness, I also recognize a sneaky way that those concepts can foster a “spiritual bypass” and allow otherwise caring, capable, loving individuals to bury their heads and become so P.C. that they won’t shout out “Hey, that person’s committing mass murder” or intervene if they see someone about to kill a child. In those instances, the appropriate response is not JUST meditation and a silent OM. Those things can help, but the appropriate response when you recognize repeated attempts at mass murder, kidnapping, genocide, etc. also includes, in my opinion, doing some major soul searching and gift searching so that you can responsibly find what you can do about it.

As conscious beings, we are not meant to play three monkeys in the face of evil, just because another 3 dimensions up, these people are all playing a cosmic game. On THIS level of the playing field, we need to find that balance of compassion, as well as dealing enough with our own Shadow so that we are not too terrified to use whatever tools and power we have at our disposal to help shift the energies. Jon Rappoport wrote a good article recently on the dance between Love and Power: http://jonrappoport.wordpress.com/2013/11/29/exiting-the-matrix-is-exploring-love-and-power/

Ahhh, and here we have another comment that really ought to be its own blog post. Oh, well. 🙂

Thanks for commenting. This is one of those topics that really concerns me as I see otherwise kind, generous, loving people completely uninspired to do anything other than meditate or post a link on Facebook. These are both valid things … but a multidimensional world requires more than one or two approaches. At least … in my opinion. But then again, I communicate with the unseens and the animals, too. It’s not ALL about the humans, although humanity’s actions (or complete non-actions) and consequences spill over into other realms.

Powerful Integration and Healing

Thanks, Lin!

I speak and write a lot about what I call “Integration Lifetimes,” and this is the most powerful meditation I have ever encountered for radical reintegration. I’ve personally got some major astrological aspects happening right now, in addition to the New Moon in Aries, the M-6 class Solar Flare and my grandmother’s transition yesterday … but wow … this was potent. I burst into tears with the first sentence and can still feel my heart cracking open even more than it already was.

If you’re the type of person who gets goosebumps as confirmation of something’s truth, you might get full body sobs on this one. Fair warning not to try this one at the office — but, please, do try it if you feel so led.

“Emotional Blindness” and the Sociopath

Today I’m sharing a blog post from LoveFraud.com, called “‘Emotional Blindness’ and the Sociopath.” I understand that some people are reeling from certain personal and/or political events right now, so I thought I’d point to an “As Within, So Without” kind of resource. In the past, I’ve also posted on healing from betrayal by narcissists. Since the charm and focus of sociopaths and narcissists tend to skyrocket them into positions of political, economic and religious power, learning to recognize some of the “why’s” and “how’s” that led to our personal (and systemically global) predicaments may help those who are ready to heal themselves and thus our world.

“Emotional Blindness” and the Sociopath

Editor’s note: The following article was submitted by the Lovefraud reader who comments as “Pearl.”

By Pearl

Someone on this blog once mentioned a book by Alice Miller and Andrew Jenkins, and it caught my attention. So now I’m reading The Truth Will Set You Free—Overcoming Emotional Blindness and Finding Your True Adult Self.

Even though I’m only about halfway through the book, I wanted to share parts of it because it is so important to what a lot of us are working on — forgiving ourselves and trying to understand why this (fraud) happened to us. I know this won’t apply or appeal to everyone, but it might help some of you as it has me. Miller’s ideas help me understand why I was susceptible and forgive myself for my blindness — my inability to spot a “bad guy.”

Miller focuses on childhood — on how corporal punishment (spanking/whipping) and humiliation — cause a type of blindness in adulthood that can lead to being manipulated and UNABLE TO SEE THROUGH LIES. She emphasizes that the kind of parenting and education aimed at breaking a child’s will and making that child into an obedient subject by means of overt or covert coercion, manipulation and emotional blackmail leaves long-lasting imprints on the way we think and relate to one another as adults.

Here is the cycle as she sees it:

“Traditional methods of upbringing, which have included corporal punishment, lead a child to DENY suffering and humiliation. (Can anyone related to having a high pain threshold? Where did I get that bruise or cut—I don’t remember getting it? Ever feel humiliated at being spanked, paddled or whipped as a child? Ever experience a parent being insensitive to suffering?)

“This denial, although essential if the child is to SURVIVE, will later cause emotional blindness.

“Emotional blindness produces “barriers in the mind” erected to guard against dangers. This means that early denied traumas become encoded in the brain, and even though they no longer pose a threat, they continue to have a subtle, destructive impact. (The memory of how to respond to such crappy behavior from our parents and authority figures is still there.)

“Barriers in the mind keep us from learning new information, putting it to good use, and shedding old, outdated behaviors.

“Our bodies retain a complete memory of the humiliations we suffered, driving us to inflict unconsciously on the next generation what we endured in childhood, unless we become aware of the cause of our behavior, which is embedded in the history of our own childhoods.”

As children, some of us learned to suppress and deny natural feelings. Some of us lived in a world where our feelings were ignored and denied.

All the beaten child remembers is FEAR and the face of the ANGRY parent, not why the beating was taking place. The child may even assume he had been naughty and deserved the punishment. Miller writes that in the absence of a witness who can empathize with us in childhood and genuinely listen to us, we have no other way of protecting ourselves from the pain but to close our minds to it.

In a bid to blot the fear and pain of our abused younger self, we erase what we know can help us, we can fall prey to the seductiveness of sects and cults, and FAIL TO SEE THROUGH ALL KINDS OF LIES.

Having this information helps me understand why I was “ripe for the picking.” It also goes a long way toward helping me forgive myself and move on in the healing process.

Empaths and Paradise

Just a quick reminder that we’re crossing some bizarre energy ripples right now, which have the power to distort in strange and sometimes scary ways. Whether you call it Mercury Retrograde in dreamy, illusion-inducing Pisces, Archontic influence of off-world beings instigating and surfing negative emotions, or simply empathing some of the intense disaster posturing of our world right now, many people are experiencing flare-ups. Emotions, spiritual issues, identity crises, physical pain that outreaches the actual diagnosis, thoughts that won’t stop recycling: yep. I’m feeling it, and I know so many others are as well, because I’m hearing from you in sessions!

Take a breath.

And another breath.

Release the long exhale.

Now breathe again.

This, too, shall pass. There seems to be some sort of collective die-off happening right now, a global healing crisis in which the human immune system has suddenly realized, “Holy, freakin’ conspiracy FACT, we have been invaded. Our world’s been hijacked by psychopaths, and things seem very dire, indeed.” The good news is: that human immune system has finally started kicking in. I’m saddened that it took the possibility of drone killing American citizens on American soil in order for more than a handful of Americans to care about mass murder, but at least something has triggered an awakening. I’m sorry that it took the possibility of our entire global food supply being completely contaminated, patented and destroyed for people to wake up to the dangers of GMO’s and Codex Alimentarius, and I’m sorry that it took fire coming out of individuals’ faucets in order for people to recognize that fracking is an obscene violence on Mother Earth. But at least more people are now screaming, “No! Not on my watch. Not while I live on this planet. I did not incarnate for this sick version of some psychopath’s master-slave dystopia.”

When an immune system (even a collective one) suddenly realizes that it has been invaded and needs to take action, the initial response can hurt. For those of us empaths, that collective shock and hurt often registers hyper-locally — in our own body, mind, emotions and spirit. I know many, many of my blog readers and clients are empaths. If you’ve ever “felt” someone else’s emotions or physical pain, you at the very least have empathic tendencies. Most people do, to varying degrees. Empathy is actually a normal part of the human condition, since we’re all interconnected by an invisible Web of Life. In fact, a complete lack of empathy is one of the definitions of a psychopath, so empathy is not something to avoid or reject. It is something incredibly human and beautiful. We just need to maintain our own balance in the midst of the intense, rapid and sometimes panicked awakenings around us.

Maintaining balance in the midst of others’ chaos presents challenges, but here’s some more good news to make it worth our while:

1) Empathy resonates with the principles “As Above, So Below,” and “As Within, So Without.” If we find ourselves so overwhelmed by external conditions that our body, mind, emotions and spirit actually begin to suffer and imitate the large outer on the small inner scale, then guess what? We can reverse that trend, too. We can treat ourselves in tangible small ways with the intention of our inner healing radiating outwards to effect change on the macro level.

2) We can remind ourselves first and foremost that any and all symptoms have some connection to outer events. Just asking the question, “Is this mine?” helps us to release the energy of fear that often keeps symptoms around much longer than a quick pass-through.

3) We can also use this period of potent energetic interconnections as a way to expand how we view our world and our place in it. Sometimes feeling like one isolated individual in a sea of chaos feels overwhelming, but if we remember our connection to everyone else and recall that the vast majority of humanity wants peace, prosperity, a healthy planet, good health, loving neighbors, and the chance to shine, then we help to bolster that energy. We strengthen ourselves when we remember how interwoven our lives really are.

Empathing others’ symptoms can feel scary and frustrating. Believe me, I know! Even knowing this I realize that I can do a much better job clearing my own energy after sessions or after dealing with sick or frightened people I encounter socially. But the flip side of empathing others’ conditions is a keen awareness of just how much influence we each have over our environment. It’s not just negativity that leaks through; positivity does, too. Inspiration is contagious. So is enthusiasm. So are ideas. Victor Hugo said, “There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.”

The time has come for many powerful ideas: liberty; sovereignty over body, mind, emotions, spirit, food and medicine; recognition of our planet as a living, breathing being; understanding ourselves as “uniquely you, divinely one”; recognizing Natural Law; a return to balance of all things; knowing that we have the power to imagine, demand and implement an entire reality that honors and respects ourselves and Nature. If symptoms can bleed through, so can solutions. This might feel like a time to hunker down in the faery bunker, but now is also the time to let ourselves shine so brightly that the rest of the decayed and crumbling, ugly, old paradigm fades out of existence, ushering in the new. I pray we use our powers of empathy to build bridges into Paradise, then cross those bridges until they become such well-worn paths that anyone who chooses can easily find the way.

Lightworkers and Abundance

Health, wealth, love — on the personal level, for humanity, for our planet: certain themes have recurred throughout the past eleven-and-a-half years of sessions.

When we hear the term “Abundance” we often think of “money,” but the desire for Abundance really covers much more than dollars or euros. We live in such an interconnected world with so many macro- issues that we can easily become overwhelmed or discouraged, even though shifting our own internal and micro- reality offers the biggest chance of positively affecting the whole.

Whenever we allow ourselves to receive improved health, greater prosperity, and experience more love, we enact a sort of sympathetic magic. Our body, mind, spirit and soul become a mini-world, and each instance of greater Abundance enlivens the collective consciousness. We may not as individuals feel powerful enough to return our government to its core principles, change our sickcare system to one that promotes wellness, or shift our society to one that values love, integrity and cooperation; however, when we reclaim sovereignty over our bodies and our reality creation, and when we practice love, soul integration and community involvement, we become the vehicles for those energies to expand in our world.

Today I just wanted to remind everyone that by refocusing, remembering and reigniting our attention and intentions, we can truly change not just ourselves, but also our entire world. We can do so with Love, and forgiving ourselves for what we have not yet done often allows just the internal shift we need in order to get started where we are.

As Gurumukh says, “You must start wherever you are, because if you don’t start somewhere, you’ll be nowhere.”

In an article called, “When the Fight for the Environment Feels Hopeless,” Jared Michaels reminds us: “If we engage with life knowing that we are the dynamic, ever-changing universe itself, we will find tremendous agency.”

In the Unity book, “Both Riches and Honor,” Annie Rix Militz shares this wonderful observation, which can apply to worldly riches but also to all the showers of “unfair” blessings that good, caring people often struggle to welcome into their lives:

“Worldly riches have been feared, despised, condemned, and even hated by spiritual aspirants, because of ignorance of how to be in them and yet not of them, how to possess them and not be possessed by them. Doubtless this attitude of repudiating and ignoring wealth is less deceiving than the other error; greed and the worship of money and the fear of losing riches. But the really wise avoid both attitudes through knowing worldly wealth to be but a reflection of the real, spiritual riches that must be sought first, last and always. Having found the riches of heaven, you cannot escape the riches of earth unless you purposely repudiate them.”

Having found the riches of heaven, you cannot escape the riches of earth unless you purposely repudiate them. For some reason that line just jumped off the page at me. We live in a world in which so many Lightworkers, healers, and generally kind and loving folks are so concerned about becoming possessed by our positive manifestations that we reject them before they arrive. Each of us does this to varying degrees in different areas of life, depending on our own individual programming, issues, experiences or past life bleed-through. If we can each — today — budge our needle of acceptance just a little to the right, the outpouring of Grace on our planet would be incredible! And after today comes another today, and another after that.

Forced Power

Thanks to Gillian for bringing this important message from Jamye Price to my attention. Regular blog readers know I’m a huge fan of “power to, not power over.”

Jamye Price ~ Forced Power

August 2012 Newsletter | August 2 2012

We are in a phase of release, letting go. It takes a master’s careful observation, patience and courage to assess with honesty. You are responsible for the Self only, and yet part of that responsibility entails the collective, as the Self can not be fully extricated from All Life. We eat it, breathe it, imbibe it and share what we have processed within. The circle continues. When you interact with yourself, you are still emitting vibrational information into the Field of Life. When you interact with another, it seems more impactful because we have something solid in front of us, yet Lightwarriors know better. Creation begins within, in the malleable and responsive subtle waves seeking particle form. It is here, within, that control has its benefit; though that control is merely focus, and that focus is Love.

Forced Power, or control, has been the norm for millennia. If we control the actions of another, we have a sense of power. If we control the emotions of another, we have a sense of peace. If we control the environment so that temptation is abated, we have a sense of piety. With Forced Power, we are actually avoiding the real empowerment, which is a focused perspective of Love within – when all experience is at the very least tolerable, but ideally exciting new balance. When you control the circumstances outside of yourself, you are not exercising your inner muscles, therefore, you have less capability to withstand the challenges. A Lightworker’s job is to shine Light where it is most challenging, within the depths of fear, anger or abuse. You do that in many ways, but the most liberating is within, and from that space of enduring bright Love Light, you shine unto others the reflection of their inner core. Freedom and unity are the result.

As we sit to Blast Forced Power, we are releasing the need to control the world and easing into Loving the Self so deeply that Love becomes visible in All around you. We are allowing the world to find its liberating equilibrium from pain by showing the new way of Loving Life so deeply that even a challenge is a mirror of freedom. We are controlling the mind’s focus into the peace that passes all understanding, as Freedom becomes so powerful within that life becomes an exciting adventure. Blast on!

DL Zeta — Activating Timelines of Oneness and Inner Unity –28 July 2012

Thanks to Lucas for bringing this one to my attention! Below you’ll find a straightforward article by DL Zeta detailing steps you can take to activate positive timelines in your life right now. As within, so without. I’ve been prepping all week for the Atlantis, Avalon and 2012 workshop I’m teaching tomorrow, so this post dovetails nicely with pondering Golden Age societies. Shirley Andrews calls this concept, “Studying the past to survive the future.” I call it, “All time is now. How do we access the most positive timelines and realities available?” In any case, DL Zeta provides a nice list of suggestions:

DL Zeta – Activating Timelines Of Oneness And Inner Unity – 28 July 2012

As old ways of being fade from your rearview mirror, you’re able to bring your full focus and attention to new visions and inspirations that stretch before you. This year marks the ultimate new beginning as the song rises within many to unite in a vision of oneness for the future. This vision allows us to become one with our higher self and move forward as a whole, unified being. When we become one within ourselves, we are able to unite with others in unity, harmony and oneness.

In this new time the energies of high-vibrational timelines are more accessible than at any other location in human consciousness. All we need do is perceive with our imagination new timelines of inner unity and oneness stretching before us in all directions and set our intention to align with these. By entering a relaxed, meditative state, we are able to sense the frequencies of these timelines entering our energy field. These frequencies have the ability to raise our vibration to allow stronger communion with our higher self. Over time this communion allows us to become telepathic to our higher self.

We offer here additional steps to activate timelines of inner unity and oneness:

One) Create inner harmony. Bring to awareness any aspects of yourself that are at odds. Ask these aspects to join together to support you and your new goals and vision. By entering the highest vibration you can access, you’re able to create a space where inner unification can take place. Meditating beforehand and chanting OM are two ways to help create this space, as does listening to music encoded with notes that simulate high-vibrational states.

Two) Make a list of everything you’re grateful for. Look at everything and everyone in your life from a place of gratitude – even those people and situations you feel have caused you the greatest pain. Every avenue of forgiveness is an opportunity to become a greater facilitator for harmony and oneness on the planet.

Three) Meditate on love, releasing all past definitions of love. Unconditional love is the purest vibration in the universe. Find within yourself the pure vibrational essence of love that is beyond all words and definition.

Four) Observe the symbols around you within every moment. As we learn the universal language of symbols we’re able to better commune with our soul and receive its messages. Dreamwork is one way to become attuned to the language of your soul. Journaling and automatic writing can also be helpful tools in learning to decode the symbols of both your sleeping and waking dreams.

Five) Ask questions of your higher self and trust that answers will flow into your consciousness as they are needed. When we release the need to micromanage the events of our lives, we enter a natural flow where everything happens easily and effortlessly.

Six) Spend time taking 15-minute sun baths, allowing the sun’s essence to enter your physical system. Take walks in nature to free yourself of any energies of divisiveness or separation. Spending time near water allows you to more easily align with universal flow.

Seven) Pay attention to your emotional landscape and the people and events that trigger challenging emotions. These triggers offer insight into the nature of your sacred wound and steps you can take to heal it. Once we heal and release our sacred wound, we are able to clear away anything that stands between ourselves and direct telepathic communion with our higher self.

Eight) Remember to eat light – taking in significant amounts of raw food, green juices and high PH water that helps alkalinize your physical system and allows you to become a stronger receiving station.

Nine) Write a spiritual autobiography detailing the blessings and gifts of the most memorable events of your life – including the events that seemed traumatic or difficult at the time.

Ten) Make time for creative play and developing your imagination. Creativity is the doorway through which all new ideas, visions, innovations and works of art arrive in the world.

These are just a few steps we can take in this new time to leave behind old ways of separation and disharmony. As we take these steps, it becomes easier to open to allow a new way founded in oneness with all-that-is and inner unity.

Become the Higher Self for Aspects not yet Aligned with the New Time

There may be parts of ourselves not yet on board with these changes. These parts will want to hold back from living at this level. Become the higher self for these selves, nurturing and loving them and bringing them to a new level of understanding. As you mentor and love these selves, they are empowered to support you in your vision of oneness and inner harmony.

If you focus dislike and judgment on these aspects within your being, (or upon what you do not like out in the world), you will only create more dissension and disharmony within you and around you. Become a force for love and harmony in the universe by loving all that comes before you. In this way, your energy creates a field around you that others can access and utilize to raise their own frequency to the level of harmony and oneness. This is the intent and purpose of the new time on planet Earth.

Happy Sovereignty Day

Happy Sovereignty Day!

May it be so.

On this July 4, 2012, we find ourselves at an interesting juncture in our world and particularly in America where a new study at Homeland “Security,” concludes that if you are “suspicious of centralized federal authority,” and are “reverent of individual liberty,” then you are an “extreme right-wing” terrorist. Thank goddess for reincarnation, or the Founding Fathers of our country would be turning over in their graves to lock and load.

We don’t need a bloody revolution, though. We already have too many wars to count inside ourselves and across our world. What we need is a LOVEolution — another step around that (r)evolutionary spiral. Yes, some things look eerily similar to 1776, but we’ve been there, done that. We live in a world and on a planet deeply in need of healing, love and self-respect. “The kingdom of heaven is within you,” “and the truth shall set you free.”

As fireworks celebrate American “Independence,” I thought I’d share some words from Susun Weed’s “Wise Woman Herbal Series.” I only recently discovered her work, and it resonates with me big time. All of her books are incredible, but I think “Healing Wise” is my favorite. This passage comes from pages 26-27 of Healing Wise. Please take a moment to consider how these words apply to your own life, to your country, as well as to our larger world:

“Unconditional love that nourishes the inner being does not tolerate abuse, ugliness, lies. Unconditional self-love brings self-respect and demands it of others. Unconditional self-love knows that it is unloving, of anyone, self or other, to allow abuse to continue, no matter their age or circumstances. Loving ourselves unconditionally strengthens our power to say ‘no’ when our heart knows that beauty and truth are not present.

“The wise woman understands that, for most of us, saying ‘no’ is hard to do. We’re afraid that if we say ‘no,’ we won’t get enough love. Or worse yet, we won’t be allowed to give our love away, and we need to give our love away so we can expect to get love from others. The wise woman understands that we expect love to come from outside, not inside. She knows that this expectation, this assumption, this hope — that love comes from outside — prevents us from speaking our truth when our heart demands that we say ‘no.’

“Loving ourselves, generating love from inside, not trying to get it from outside, that is the Wise Woman way, a way that allows ‘no’ to reveal its loving nature.

“Become aware of how often you do the expected thing, the good thing, the right thing, says the Wise Woman helper, and acknowledge the part of yourself that is a liar, that is afraid to say, ‘no.’

“Truth and unconditional love support each other. To love yourself unconditionally, you must tell yourself the truth. You cannot hear your own truth if you are lying to others. Begin to tell the truth in the smallest thing. This brings you wholeness. Tell the truth often and you will be filled with beauty. You will have health. You will walk the beauty way of health/wholeness/holiness. Your truth will bless all you encounter. You will be blessed. Do not be afraid to reveal your own uniqueness, for that is part of your blessing.”

May it be so.

Active Hope

Last evening, David and I attended a lecture by author, translator and activist Joanna Macy regarding her most recent book called “Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy.” Co-authored with Chris Johnstone, this book takes an unflinching look at what Joanna describes as three streams: 1) the increasing fascism and control/destruction of individual rights and our environment; 2) “The Great Unraveling,” as these structures begin to suffocate under their own weight and insider exposures; and 3) “The Great Turning,” also called the Awakening, the new environmentalism, the Golden Age, and many other things.

Joanna’s talk discussed three aspects of activism, corresponding to these streams: 1) political/structural attempts to ” “slow down” the devastation, using the system to improve the system; 2) development of creative new ways to solve problems, such as the many eco-friendly and community-based start-up endeavors; and 3) a return to Old Wisdom and complete reconnection with Mother Earth — a recognition of our own hands as full of stardust and full of Earth.

Here’s the description we received from the Madison Area Permaculture Guild:

“Joanna Macy, world renowned deep ecologist and eco-spirituality elder, will be in Madison and present a public talk at First Unitarian Society. For decades, the octogenarian Macy has been spreading the word of the needed Great Turning from an Industrial Growth Society to a Life Sustaining Society. She teaches practices to help bring this about, starting with spiritual awakening. This is her first time speaking in Madison and an amazing opportunity.

http://www.activehope.info/index.html

“Active Hope is about finding, and offering, our best response to the crisis of sustainability unfolding in our world. It offers tools that help us face the mess we’re in, as well as find and play our role in the collective transition, or Great Turning, to a life-sustaining society.

“’Books about social and ecological change
too often leave out a vital component:
how do we change ourselves
so that we are strong enough
to fully contribute to this great shift?
Active Hope fills this gap beautifully,
guiding readers on a journey of gratitude, grief,
interconnection and, ultimately, transformation.’
~Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine.

“At the heart of this book is the idea that Active Hope is something we do rather than have. It involves being clear what we hope for and then playing our role in the process of bringing that about. The journey of finding, and offering, our unique contribution to the Great Turning helps us to discover new strengths, open to a wider network of allies and experience a deepening of our aliveness. When our responses are guided by the intention to act for healing of our world, the mess we’re in not only becomes easier to face, our lives also become more meaningful and satisfying.”

Amazon’s description of Active Hope follows:

“The challenges we face can be difficult even to think about. Climate change, the depletion of oil, economic upheaval, and mass extinction together create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. Active Hope shows us how to strengthen our capacity to face this crisis so that we can respond with unexpected resilience and creative power. Drawing on decades of teaching an empowerment approach known as the Work That Reconnects, the authors guide us through a transformational process informed by mythic journeys, modern psychology, spirituality, and holistic science. This process equips us with tools to face the mess we’re in and play our role in the collective transition, or Great Turning, to a life-sustaining society.”

We found ourselves recognizing a kindred spirit in Joanna, as she expressed so many of the ideas that David and I regularly discuss. In particular, she assessed that political and community activism and new projects cannot by themselves overcome the challenges presented to humanity right now. They can slow things down and sprout new ideas, but those new ideas will wither without good soil and an internal shift that changes the way we view our world. As within, so without. As a Buddhist, Joanna discussed how her faith has helped her to engage challenges, and she giggled at the irony of a Buddhist writing a book about “hope.” The concept of Active Hope as something one does, rather than just a passive wishing or attachment to results, brought a sense of groundedness, mindfulness and empowerment to her activism. She shared the idea that Active Hope occurs moment by moment as we choose which kind of world we wish to engage and nurture into being.

She also reminded us that we can never know our own ripple effect in the Universe. We can never truly know how those moment by moment decisions affect another person, animal, being or the entire, integrated collective. But we can know what feels better moment by moment, and we can continue to choose the world we envision and love. Joanna gave a call to Visionaries to hold the vision and to transform ourselves from within so that we’re ready to manifest that vision. We loved her talk, as did the packed sanctuary at the First Unitarian Society, also known as Frank Lloyd Wright’s home congregation.

We also loved the fact that she’s in her 80’s and continuing to travel around the world and inspire local projects. She acknowledged how Madison has sparked imaginations and hearts around the world, modeling peaceful, high vibe activism. She reminded us not to give up. Just because people experience a setback or a discouraging moment, doesn’t mean to throw in the towel. She exhorted those in attendance to keep going, keep shining, and keep bringing in the world we wish to create: “the world is watching Madison.”

Another highlight of the evening was Joanna’s reciting of some Rainer Maria Rilke poetry she had translated from the original German:

I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one
but I give myself to it.

I circle around God, around the primordial tower.
I’ve been circling for thousands of years
and I still don’t know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a great song?

~ Ranier Maria Rilke ~

(Rilke’s Book of Hours:Love Poems to God, translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy)

She finds poetry speaks to our times much more than prose and also recited a poem by Milwaukee resident Susa Silvermarie:

A Thousand Years of Healing

From whence my hope, I cannot say,
except it grows in the cells of my skin,
in my envelope of mysteries it hums.
In this sheath so akin to the surface of the earth
it whispers. Beneath
the wail and dissonance in the world,
hope’s song grows. Until I know
that with this turning
we put a broken age to rest.
We who are alive at such a cusp
now usher in
one thousand years of healing!

Winged ones and four-leggeds,
grasses and mountains and each tree,
all the swimming creatures,
even we, wary two-leggeds
hum, and call, and create
the Changing Song. We remake
all our relations. We convert
our minds to the earth. In this turning time
we finally learn to chime and blend,
attune our voices; sing the vision
of the Great Magic we move within.
We begin
the new habit, getting up glad
for a thousand years of healing.

I will leave you with a video: Active Hope Show 1 – The Shambhala Warrior Prophecy

Joanna Macy tells the Shambhala Warrior Prophecy, twelve centuries old and from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Introduced by Chris Johnstone, this is the first episode of The Active Hope Show, which explores insights and practices that help bring out our best responses to the planetary emergency we face.

Aho!
