Thoughts on Turning Fifty

Yesterday, David and I celebrated my 50th birthday, and I have to say it was my favorite one yet! Thank you to everyone who sent texts, emails, cards, calls and more. I don’t know why, but I have never been so excited to turn a year older.

Aging is such a paradox for me, because I look way younger than my years, but I have always felt ancient. I’ve communicated with the dead since my best friend Grandpa Frank died when I was three. I then became best friends with his widow, my Grandma Van. Wherever I live, I tend to have at least one dear friend in her eighties. I have many clients in their seventies who send me “Mother’s Day” greetings, and my own mom often introduces me as “the best mom” she could ever have.

I recall loads of past lives going back to prehistoric times, and I experience these memories as one, long, continuous life. I remember dying in different ways, have previewed and empathed many people’s deaths at the time they died, only to learn later that this was not my imagination. I’ve had way more near death experiences (NDE’s) than most people. I always get sent back here, but I feel SO OLD most of the time. Not old, decrepit–old like a tree that bears witness to the rise and fall of empires. That sounds dramatic, but it’s how I experience “life” on a daily basis.

Throw in precognitive dreams and visions, and I’m simultaneously ancient and sometimes a decade ahead of the calendar. Clocks on my nightstand don’t work. They always run way fast, even if we reset them to the proper time.

Added to this mix is my May 19, 1998 car accident, which served as a not-so-subtle end of an era. This occurred three days before I turned twenty-five. I received a great big traumatic brain injury for that birthday, and I became totally disabled like an old person. Memory problems, balance issues, constantly in the doctor’s office, couldn’t drive anymore, lost my independence, retired from my career … and I have pretty much reverse aged since then. Now I regularly shock people who think I’m in my twenties, thirties, or–if they kind of know that’s impossible–then people like my shocked nephew think I’m forty-two.

David and I tend to celebrate “birthday month,” since his birthday’s May 7th. We took a beautiful three-day weekend up in Traverse City area for his, and for mine we did little day trips and outings around Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. David took me to the farmers market and various plant stores, and I got the rest of the garden planted up this weekend. We tried some amazing (and new to us) vegan food, and yesterday we spent the day in Ann Arbor. David arranged it all, hitting a perfect balance of bookstores, crystal shop, and a French cafe, followed by Mother Nature.

We took a lovely walk–almost a hike–in Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, followed by a delicious meal at the vegetarian restaurant, Seva. I’ll share a few photos from our day, since David documented it for Crazy Plant Lady, who is now–finally–“in her fifties.”

They have a huge collection of peonies at the botanical garden!

From the botanical garden, we moved onto diverse trails of the arboretum. My knee has recovered enough to hike almost three miles, including lots of hills and steps.

As usual, we saw a lot of owls, including this one:

My mom’s happy birthday text revealed that she had heard an owl hoot when she awoke yesterday. You also might have noticed (in the first photo) this gorgeous owl and moonstone pendant birthday gift from my sweet faery “twin” Tania Marie. She has a matching one with rabbits!

We saw more owls at Seva but didn’t document those since we were busy enjoying our meal. Presence is important, even for people as temporally challenged as I am. Take time to stop and smell the rhododendrons:

  8. Have an enjoyable new year of life, Laura. It is so nice to be born in May, both you and your partner! I recently read of a medical study that examined patients born between 1900 and 2000; the conclusion was that May-born people are at the lowest risk for disease. That may not mean that there are no challenges whatsoever, or any health problems at all, but it indicates that the constitution and vitality of people born in May is (for other ⊕︀ than astrological reasons) the best. That is good luck, on top of good luck.. of being born in May. Many blessings!

    • Very interesting! Well, between Taurus and Gemini, David and I have things covered. He’s got four planets in Taurus. I have four in Gemini. His start at 0 Taurus, and my Midheaven’s at 28+ Taurus. My Gemini Sun’s at 1 Gemini, and his Venus is at 29 Gemini, so we’ve got both, start to finish. 🙂 As you say, though, probably not astrological. Maybe it’s the warmer weather?

      • Yes.. I thought about mothers during the pregnancy and what they experienced (particularly internally) and the baby’s first impressions about life, both of which are subconscious, preverbal, nonverbal … but must affect constitution, vitality and outlook in the person.

The weather in spring, the longer day light and nature being abundant and full of scents and sounds from birds and wildlife can be grouped into the very early impressions about what life is about.

Good luck in your new year of life. 🍀

Jupiter in Taurus will affect your partner (positively) in this transit, as Jupiter is the benefactor, expansion and fortune — a good influence that he can claim!

Everyone else will be affected by this transit to varying degrees, but if we translate Taurus to “mother earth energy”, we can conclude that all these good things will be enhanced and can become auspicious to us, if we let them.

        • Yes! David also has natal Jupiter in Taurus, so he’ll be having a Jupiter Return later this year, very close to the exact sextile of Saturn in Pisces and Jupiter in Taurus. I’m looking forward to increased beauty in our world.

  9. YAY faery fifty twin powers activate! Form of ancient soul ageless body wonders ✨️💥🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️ LOL
    Looking good L!

Besides wanting to be natural, the reason I love having my silver hair is to bring through some of that ancient because most my life people always asked me what school I go to when I was way beyond that age and the book wasn’t matching the cover. It’s only funny when it isn’t lol That’s T Cappy for you!

Glad you loved birthday gifties and that you had such a good birthday celebration weekend and month. I’m still celebrating here because I feel the same… have been so excited for the big 5-0 and now can’t wait for 55!! My favorite up ahead! Love our matching portal friends pendants.. messengers from beyond.

As I mentioned, these photos remind me of the ones David took of us in the garden we walked when I visited you in Goshen. Seems so long ago!

Hopefully we’ll get to celebrate some birthdays or life in person again soon. Have a fun 50 month and year!! So glad we found each other again. Love you!

    • Yes, I was thinking of all of these things, especially the gardens on your visit here in 2015. That one garden was actually in Michigan, just over the border.

As to hair, you know I have henna’d for something like 18 years, and it’s a whole ritual that feels so good on my brain. Without the henna, though, I still have very few grays, and most of those are underneath. An occasional white hair, too, but mostly, this is my hair.

So glad we are in each other’s lives! Love you, too!

      • Hehe! I still vividly see those photos in my brain from that trip.. each trip so shifting!

Yep you are the henna faery! One of those self nourishing body and soul things indeed!

I do think about the days of fun colors in the hair like expression styles, kind of like your glasses too. Now I do so it with clothes and tattoos.. for the first time in a while I started thinking about new tattoo possibilities. Not sure I will but you never know!

        Weeeeee sure have fun!

Happy 50th Pleiadian birthday! May life get sweeter for you! I spent your birthday at an eye clinic…my Dad (birth date 1st April) was there (from the afterlife) around a natal 4th April optroptist who let that info slip through. I spent the next day in shock! I’ve been trying to paint away any signs of glaucoma. So family history strikes again around the 70 year mark.

    • Thank you, Cynthia! I love when that sort of thing pops up in “regular” medical appointments. I’ve had some rather funny and unexpected discussions with optometrists and opticians over the years. People who work with vision often have more awareness of other types of vision than just the eyes. Wishing you good healing!

Thanks. I can see the hunched old owl more clearly now! And I have an appointment with an eye consultant who does space research ie. effect of space travel on the optic nerve…just like when a car is flying in space during an accident?

  15. Congratulations on reaching the half century mark! And Happy Solar Return! Your Dream Self might seem ancient, but you’re actually timeless. Especially in the midst of the trees and flowers in those pics, you still fit the description of being “a very poorly disguised Faerie”. Card 50 is the 10 of Cups, so this all portends well for you.

    • I love it! Thank you, Tim! Hehe, yeah, that reminds me of a 2010 appointment I had with a shaman in Canada. After about two minutes she cracked up and said, “Well! They made a good approximation with you.”

      I asked, “Approximation of what?”

“Of a human. It’s like they just slap dashed you together, but it’s all for show.”

We proceeded to have a VERY interesting discussion. 🙂 Looking forward to my 10 of Cups year, as I look at my 10 of Cups portal while typing this.

Welcome to the club, and you look great!. 😀 I’m a Scorpio Sun, as I think mentioned once, so my entrance was 6 months ago, but being a Gemini Asc really leavens that Sun intensity and the Cap Moon heaviness, and lends a more youthful appearance with very few grey hairs, yet. 😎. I always read the Gemini description for transits, since it is so much more accurate and up to date than transits ascribed to Scorpio.
