The Hermit Archetype in a Time of Social Distance

As large swaths of humanity practice “social distancing” and “voluntary quarantine,” it becomes clear why The Hermit keeps knocking on me to become the next portal painting. This has been going on for months, but I always let paintings announce themselves in their own timing. Today, I got out nine (for Hermit’s #9) Tarot decks and pulled the Hermit card from each, so I could explore the archetype itself.

I laid them out on the mandala rug in my office and found this image so emblematic of society right now:

All the individual Hermits doing their own thing, shine light outward, but they also blend into a larger, connecting mandala. These larger, magical connections become more apparent (in focus) the more we each “blur” our usual perspectives and go deeper inside ourselves.

I felt led to post a lot during the early stages of the US crisis, and yes, I’m still doing sessions and March Specials still apply. If it seems like I’ve pulled back from blogging, though, you’re right. When I create a portal painting, I dive into the energies of that project. The Hermit will be Divine Doorway Number 21 in this series. A canvas awaits this painting, so I’ll need to create my own “door” on it. We’ll see what kind of light comes out of the solitary darkness. It feels like pondering and painting The Hermit now may somehow assist collective energies in pulling the deepest wisdom from this time apart.

Meanwhile, here are a few favorite links about the Hermit:

Enjoy this sacred time and milk it for all it’s worth. This is a golden opportunity for the collective to receive wisdom and blessings before harsher circumstances force even more isolation. I pray enough people embrace the not-so-gentle nudge to go deep inside and see what they find.

    Hi Laura,

I had a vision last night that I thought I should share. It happened several times until I “got it”.

It was the image of a right hand, covered in something white (light?), that was suddenly cut open/cut down by something I couldn’t see. The Hermit cards above reminded me of it, as all of them show him holding a light in his right hand.

I’m not sure what to make of it, but it felt very ominous to me…

Tangentially related, but your collection of Hermits reminded me of a card that’s not included in your nine (that I can tell anyway), and that is The Hermit card of Joanna Powell Colbert’s Gaian Tarot. I don’t have this deck myself, being content with Robin Wood’s deck for –OMG 27 years– but I remembered JPC’s website had screenshots of various cards. So I went to look. The one I wanted wasn’t viewable, but she hasn’t been idle…. look at what popped up!

Blurb: The deck and book set explores the relationship between herbs and how people use them for medicine, creativity, ritual, and spiritual guidance. It also considers herbs as archetypes and explores our partnership with the botanical realm. The Herbcrafter’s Tarot is an engaging introduction to herbalism and plant spirit magic, and can be used as a profound divinatory tool.

me again: I had been asking for something like this, and indirectly you led me to it. 🙂 Wow! Thanks!

    • Awesome, thanks Kieron! We do have the Gaian Tarot, along with many other decks. I just stopped at nine for the Hermit’s number. 🙂 We have an almost embarrassing number of decks, LOL, but I still mostly use the Robin Wood one, and lately I’ve been using the Fairy Lights Tarot for my own personal use. 🙂

I finally got started on the Hermit portal today. My goodness, as the world went into hermit mode, I got super busy! While rumblings to reopen society get louder, I feel like this Hermit portal has now had enough time to incubate. The bottom quote changed at least five times, and I received an extra month of Dreamtime instructions. Today, as the Sun crosses 15 Taurus, the actual crossquarter day of Beltane, I designed and sketched the outline and filled in the sky. The lantern of wisdom begins to shine its rays in the darkness.
