What a difference three years has made! Happy Beltane from Faery Hof and Haus Am See, where the red tulips are *still* blooming their hearts out, and unlike this 2013 post when the faery haven yard existed primarily in my imagination, we have flowers and trees and abundance everywhere! Beltane Blessings to the Land and Her people!
Today I had one of those afternoons that reminds me of being a little girl. I spent time with my favorite 82-year-old friend in Goshen at her lovely lakefront home. Before heading over there, I had a real flashback to childhood May Day celebrations when, for some reason, I always felt compelled to gather violets into old strawberry baskets handwoven and tied with ribbons, delivering these in the predawn hours on neighbors’ porches. This afternoon, I gathered a salad full of wild violet leaves and flowers for David and me, but then picked another bag to gift to my friend. This extra bag of edible flowers and nature’s tender “lettuce” was an even bigger hit than her requested bag of dandelion greens!
Unbeknownst to me as a little girl, May Day represents a celebration of flowers and ribbons, and Beltane’s fire festival honors the Earth in preparation for an abundant…

I so love that image of you as a little girl, gathering violets. The significance was “Unbeknownst” to you as a little girl, but of course you were impelled from another piece of your soul’s latent wisdom, that was just waiting to fully blossom in your consciousness in the right season, when you were seasoned. In my own childhood, growing up on the farm, we had a gravel drive that led up the little hill upon which our farmstead sprawled out. On the edges of the gravel drive little gullies would form from the spring rains. In those gullies would be the finest of sand, and from that sand violets would sprout and bloom. As a little boy I was also so enchanted by those violets, perched in gravel gullies in their soft beds of sand….

Oh, how lovely! We had a wild violet and danelion and homegrown lettuce and spinach herb salad yesterday. It was so joyfully yummy. There’s just something about violets! A farmer came to our home last weekend and just could not contain her delight over the huge, lush patch of Violet’s by the tree stump out back. Happy Beltane!

Again, not everyone who celebrates the turning of the Wheel of the Year and the various harvest festivals is a Satanist! Far from it. I am not a Satanist; I am aware of their existence and that they co-opted and perverted most of the ancient holidays. No blood is required to honor the Earth, although blood and bones are typical soil amendments for people who don’t know how else to fertilize their soil.
Really, though, please educate yourself that Christianity invented “Satan” and perverted all the old feminine festivals to turn into something “evil” like women in general.

Happy Beltaine! 🙂 I’ve been remarking on the simply boggling number of volunteer plants that are coming up in unexpected places where they must have seeded themselves. Even things I didn’t think would spread by seed are popping up. Oh, and the little gift exchange I told you about in a private note seems to be keeping up! 😀 A dainty little tea party dish turned up when I was weeding, probably something that got left unattended and got swept up in last fall’s leaf gathering activities. I thought it was cute, and set it in the same little space where the other items were found. We’ll see if anything new turns up. 😉
