I love this post, and it explains to me one of many reasons I elected to be born in Pennsylvania — Penn’s Woods, founded by the Quaker, William Penn. i’ve always felt so aligned with the simplicity, mysticism, respect and sincerity of Quakers, and some of my favorite people in Elkhart County also happen to host a Friends Meeting in their home. Thanks for this historical perspective!

My wife is descended from the “Boston Martyr” Mary Dyer who was so influenced by George Fox and who was hung for her relentless adherence to freedom of religion in the colonies – a trait of character that was often associated with witchy “possession” in those days. Her mother’s maiden name is Dyer. You don’t want to mess with any of the Dyer women.

I meant “hanged” though “hung” might also apply. LOL

Here is a short little gem of a book about Mary Dyer which gives a feel for what was happening in the colonies at that turbulent time. Dyer’s painted image looks uncannily like that of my wife who is distantly related.
