Baker Creek Seeds ~ Defeat the DARK Act

Today’s post comes from Baker Creek Seeds’ newsletter. The video offers an old fashioned style educational tool that explains what’s really happening. I have to admit to a real “duh” moment while reading the newsletter and watching the video. I had been thinking of the DARK Act as affecting food labeling in stores but figured I’d continue to grow my own food, so it would have minimal impact on me. Bizarrely enough, it never occurred to me how that would affect heirloom seed suppliers like Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co, where I have bought many of my more ornamental food seeds. As always, please do what you can on whatever levels you feel called.

Clearly, petitions don’t change everything, but sometimes they slow things down. In the long run, it’s much easier to call your Representative and Senator than to learn how to grow all your own food and save all your own heirloom, non-GMO seed, especially if you live in a predominantly GMO polluted area. Just putting things into perspective: I love my garden(s), but the learning curve and time investment towards food sovereignty and self-reliance are steep. Best to shove the DARK Act back where the Sun don’t shine and far, far away from our gardens and organic farms!

Defeat the DARK Act!

Watch our special message featuring Dave here!

To no one’s surprise, the US House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, with no debate, on July 14, 2015 voted to send the DARK Act on, for consideration by the full House of Representatives. More properly known as the HR1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, this insidious piece of legislation has been dubbed Deny Americans the Right to Know – or DARK – Act, because of its draconian implications. Not only would this Act deny consumers the right to know what is in their food, it is a flagrant attack on our democratic institutions.

Introduced by Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and G. K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), developed by food companies including the Grocery Manufacturers Association to further their own agenda, the Act would:

prohibit the states from enacting mandatory GMO labeling laws
prevent states from regulating genetically modified crops, including measures that are designed to protect communities from exposure to pesticide drift from spraying GMO
weaken the FDA’s regulatory framework
create a GMO safety review system based on industry “science”
block all non-GMO claims that have not approved by a new USDA certification program that could take years to establish (so that foods could not even be labeled as “non-GMO” until and unless the new system is implemented)
would allow the regulated term “natural” to be applied to products that include GMO ingredients

If approved by the House, the bill will then move to the Senate for consideration.

We see this legislation as a desperate and blatant bid by Big Food to circumvent growing public opposition to genetically modified foods, and to the movement to require labeling of such foods so that those who wish can avoid purchasing them. It also attempts to preempt states’ rights, which has long been a cornerstone of American democracy and governance. (Several states including Vermont, Connecticut and Maine have already enacted labeling requirements for food products containing genetically-modified ingredients, and many other states are considering such legislation. )

But the underlying implications are more sinister, and are truly frightening. Combined with pressure to fast-track TPP (the so-called Trans-Pacific Partnership), and the recent removal of “country of origin” labeling (allowing US-grown livestock to be exported to countries like China for processing, and be re-exported to this country with no labeling requirement informing consumers of the food’s history), we see the DARK Act as the next move in an unprecedented consolidation of corporate power world-wide. We wonder: what’s next?

If we’re looking at the end-game of a corporate power-grab, then we need everyone to play, and fast! It is vital that you contact your Congressman immediately and go on record with your opposition to the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. Any of the following links makes it easy:

I called my House rep yesterday and the staffer was courteous but very brief and bluntly overrode my attempt to explain why I wanted my rep to vote NO on the DARK Act. I’m unsure if he had 50 calls on the line waiting, or if there had been a deluge of NO calls and the rep is already planning to vote against it. Who knows.

  2. I signed a petition and just sent a VERY strong thought form to my Rep. She is a shameless and vocal Monsanto whore. Every time we drive by her office in Mishawaka, she also gets a big blast of “get out.” They say you use magick when nothing else works. I used the AR Rune (light) to counteract the DARK Act, and whenever I see her name or her office, I envision Jackie Walorski being escorted out of any areas of influence.

I try to restrain myself from imagining handcuffs for treason, and *sometimes* I succeed. I always ask for a reply back so that I can give her the benefit of the doubt if she ever does a 180. So far, no go. She’s proud of her “service” to all the big’s, and so the smalls with the big imagination get to have at her.

Thanks for calling your Rep, whatever the result. Honestly, I think the fix is in, but objection and conscientious objection wield energetic power towards a shift or failure to implement their plan.

  5. Writing or calling your Reps. or Senators seems futile. Most of them are bought and paid for, and most of them know that they are part of a fraudulent system. (www,scannedretina.com). How many times in the last 6 decades have the masses voted against something, just to have it slipped in later on when no one is paying attention. Our current political and judicial system is corrupt beyond words, and until folks realize this dark truth, it will not change. Do your own research, and share what you find with others. That is the only way this travesty will be disclosed. Power to the people means we must be ever diligent.

Let’s not forget that the neuro toxins in our food, air, and water affect the part of our brain that makes us apathetic. No wonder the sheeple won’t wake up. They don’t even know they’re asleep, sigh. Apathy, denial, and fear is why we’re in this mess, and spreading the truth, being active, and doing the research is the only way out. Let’s pray it isn’t too late to turn it around.

  6. Agreed! See my comment on what’s done RE: my own Rep, who is an outspoken and shameless Monsanto whore. Any and all methods are fair game now, and growing your own food is one of the most important steps, on so many levels, including sovereignty, vibration, health, beauty, community, alignment with Nature and more.
