While researching licorice as an edible landscape plant in zone 5, I stumbled upon a new (to me) blog called “Temperate Climate Permaculture.” Not only has this blog answered all sorts of food forest questions, but it also includes a delightful post called, “Throw Your Hat Over the Fence” — highly recommended for anyone who feels the tug of the new or the Big Dream without seeing or knowing the “how.” Here’s a metaphorical trick I’ve advised many a client to try and have used in making my own life far more daring and magical than most people might believe.
Throw Your Hat Over the Fence
I don’t really believe in good luck charms, but I’ve had a talisman for almost 30 years. It has been my secret weapon for accomplishments. I rarely shared about it in the past, because I never wanted its magic to wear off.
The secret is a story. And this has been the most influential story of my life. Up until today, I never knew it was inspirational to so many others as well.

Interesting timing, as usual. I have that space in the backyard that wants to be a rain garden and small pond, side by side, but the size (relatively small, all things considered) is daunting. I know I can do it, but time slips away, and the windows in the house absolutely need to be replaced this summer… yet last evening while weeding I found baby dragonflies and bugs of all kinds flitting among the tall (really tall!) lamb’s quarters that keeps coming up, and it reminded me that if you build it, they will come– even in the big city. So I gotta figure out what form my hat will take…

Glad to, but how do I ask? I’m not quite clear about that, and saying it out loud feels silly. Anyway, I had the impression they’re more likely to notice/appreciate actions. 🙂
Maybe I should start with asking to be connected to the right landscape artist. I got a design from one back in April but I didn’t like her plant recommendations and she didn’t seem to get what I had in mind. So it went nowhere.

Just ask them in your head. They do notice and appreciate actions, but when it comes to gardening or creating nature habitats, they also understand they need human help, making this a joint project. You procure the plants and put in the physical effort; they’ll take care of the magic and synchronicities. Mutual benefit!
Also, the Faery Referral Network is the best connection service I’ve ever found when it comes to finding the right person for whatever job. They literally brought my mulch guy down the street by the woods about 2 minutes after I said to them (in my head), “Look, if you want me to create a faery haven and nourish our land back to health, then I need wood mulch and lots of us.” As soon as I got out of the woods, a tree service truck was driving right towards me. I flagged him down and have had probably 20 loads from him, plus, now he has a list of at least 15 households who get mulch delivered to them. He used to need to pay to dump in the landfill, whereas now, there are all these lush gardens around town reusing waste and building soil. Just one example of many …. That’s the FRN!
