Laura – you and many of your readers might be interested in the site http://www.earthship.com. The architect has been building these very interesting, almost totally off the grid, houses and teaching others worldwide to do so for the past 20 or so years. Among other things, if I’m remembering correctly they use the water 4 different times, passive heating and cooling (even in very hot or cold climates), indoor gardens, etc. Although it doesn’t necessarily help those of us who have conventionally built houses to retrofit them, it does give some wonderful ideas of what’s possible. Really inspirational!
Thanks, Linda! Yes, David made me aware of these back in 2010 and we’ve talked of possibly building one some day. I know some people who have lived or stayed in Earthships before. They are not perfect, but are really, super cool and efficient! Thanks for the link.
