Healing Lyme Disease

January 2019 Update: after another 10 years of sessions and research, I’ve just released “Lyme Journal: A Guided Recovery Workbook,” which you can find here. I’m still working on my book, “The Metaphysics of Lyme Disease,” also based on 17 years as a Medical Intuitive.

Healing Lyme Disease

Several people have contacted me since I announced that my [now ex-] husband had managed to heal from severely debilitating Lyme Disease. I have written on this topic before in my book, If I Only Had a Brain Injury: A TBI Survivor and Life Coach’s Guide to Chronic Fatigue, Concussion, Lyme Disease, Migraine or Other Medical Mystery, available as an ebook and or paperback through me. The book went to print before Stephen recovered, but it does include our protocol from late 2004 until early 2008, when he had mostly recovered. Since early 2009, he has appeared to be completely Lyme-symptom-free, and people have asked if we discovered anything between 2008 and 2009.

I will share some of those things in this article. As I explain in the book and in other articles, Lyme Disease tends to affect people who have big things to offer the world. These people may already seem to be “on their path” and often excel in multiple areas at once, including the healing arts.  What I’ve noticed as a Medical Intuitive, spouse and friend to many people with Lyme Disease, is that the illness tends to appear in people who could go even deeper with their healing and creative gifts but for one reason or another feel locked into their current lifestyle. Perhaps they have unexpressed creative gifts like photography, painting or writing. Maybe they’ve been waiting for life to “let up” before they indulge such longings. I’ve noticed without fail, though, that the creative pursuits themselves offer healing — not just for the Lyme folks, but for the world in a bigger way.

Lyme seems to show up like a roto-rooter, forcing people to dig deep and remove ALL blocks to creativity and healing. To the outside world, these people usually look like they have no blocks because they’re moving so effectively through life, but Life has other plans. It’s as though these people came in with a bigger mission than their current lifestyle or world view allows. They may get nudged a few times, but if they don’t respond fully, then along come some little spirochetes to terrorize the immune and neurological systems into action. Like a guerilla army, the bacteria sneak inside without detection and then launch a massive attack that captures attention through shock and awe.

I have seen many patterns with Lyme patients: brighter than average in both intelligence and spirit, healing gifts that need even more expression than currently allowed, highly creative, and usually highly energetic prior to the Lyme fatigue. Things that do NOT seem related: diet, exercise level, and spiritual awareness. I have seen people catch Lyme while they eat all types of diets: South Beach, SAD, vegan, 100% raw vegan, vegetarian … it just doesn’t seem to matter in terms of who catches the disease. I’ve seen major athletes catch Lyme as well as total couch potatoes who just happened to cross paths with a rogue tick. I’ve seen people who’ve followed yoga for 20 years catch Lyme, as well as people for whom Lyme marked their very first foray into alternative spirituality.

The biggest common denominator seems to be that Lyme arrives when some anger has gone unexpressed and when self-love does not match the degree of love and blessings these folks spread into the world. The anger may stem from an anger at the way society treats the disenfranchised, or it may stem from early child abuse; it may relate to seething resentment from a relationship or series of relationships; it may come from a feeling that life has unfairly passed the person by even though they’ve sacrificed a lot to serve others. I don’t notice a pattern to the cause of anger, but the anger seems consistent among the many, many Lyme folks who’ve contacted me for Medical Intuitive readings. The second common denominator comes from the disparity between all the love going out from these folks and the degree to which they allow themselves truly to receive nurturing and love without a sense of earning it or paying it back. Lyme folks tend to be major givers with high vibes before they catch the spirochetes. Lyme arrives as a chance — albeit a difficult one — to become one with all that love flowing through their words and deeds. It becomes a chance to experience their own love the way others experience it … to realize that the universe supports and loves them and wants them to shine even brighter than they allowed themselves to imagine before.

As such, Lyme remains a very difficult disease to treat. Most of those affected are, in this lifetime or certainly in previous ones, highly advanced healers. This awareness (whether conscious or completely subconscious) makes them adept at sidestepping treatments that would bring about healing before the lessons take root. Intuitively, Lyme sufferers have a sense that something must need to shift, even though they may not realize what or to what degree things need changing.  I find this true of most diseases. Lyme just seems to operate at a faster and more aggressive level, outsmarting anyone who might offer relief before the soul receives its full blessing. I find it incredibly important to examine and treat the soul as well as the body. I wrote If I Only Had a Brain Injury because I know that most people with Lyme, brain injuries, or other medical mysteries cannot afford ongoing sessions. The book allows them to take steps to coach themselves.

That said, I have found a number of supplements that work very well on the physical level — providing the relief needed in order to focus on the mental, emotional and spiritual factors. Please remember, I am NOT a doctor. I am not offering medical advice here. I’m just sharing some things that have worked well for Stephen and/or for other Lyme survivors. I would never want anyone to suffer unnecessarily, so I’m offering some ideas here, which you can research on your own to see if they resonate with you. I am in no way affiliated with any of these supplements.

Prima Una de Gato: TOA-Free Cat’s Claw, also known as Samento. We started Stephen on this in 2006 and found major improvement with his speech impairment (he stopped talking in opposites), memory and some improvement in joint pain. A little goes a long way, and it must be added in gradually in order to avoid a major Herxheimer reaction.

Oil of Oregano This is just a great supplement to have on hand anyway, given all the concern about Swine Flu. Oil of Oregano is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic. Its structure is complex and therefore less likely for the spirochetes to develop an immunity to. The pills tend to make people burp, but the liquid burns going down. Mixed in water with Liquid Chlorophyll seemed the easiest way for Stephen to swallow this consistently. It also offered extra alkalizing effects due to the chlorophyll. Those with respiratory illnesses can also inhale the steam from a few drops in a pot of boiling water.

Teasel Root Tincture This one’s hard to come by, but if you can find it, you may find it very helpful for joint aches. Taking teasel root completely removed years of arthritic symptoms in Stephen’s knees — almost overnight. I’ve heard similar stories from other Lyme folks who’ve managed to grow their own or find tinctures or teas online. You’ll have to Google this one for more info.

Reishi Mushrooms I tried putting Stephen on this early on and the die-off was too intense for him. Once he had improved significantly, though, I put him back on Reishi and his memory completely returned. He now seems sharper mentally than he did prior to his Lyme ordeal, which continues to amaze me.

Host Defense This is a specific blend of medicinal mushrooms. I don’t have Stephen on this now, but he and a number of others noticed major benefits while taking it. Stephen in particular had less joint pain and almost a normal amount of energy while taking this, as opposed to overwhelming fatigue when ill and not taking it.

Maitake Mushrooms Another medicinal mushroom, which seems to work well for Lyme and supporting the immune system. I switched from Host Defense to Maitake and Stephen made a leap forward in terms of energy and vitality. I’ve worked this in as a regular supplement even though he no longer shows any Lyme symptoms.

Resveratrol Found in skins of dark grapes, red wine, and Japanese Knotwood, this extract supposedly offers strong support for the immune system. I have Stephen on this as a regular supplement, and in addition to keeping the Lyme completely at bay, he’s noticed improved vision to the point of not needing glasses with his laptop computer. His periodontist also commented that his gums look better than ever and seem to be regenerating way faster than anticipated.

Nitrous Oxide This one sounds controversial, but we stumbled upon it “accidentally.” I had read that nitrous gets rid of Lyme Disease and Stephen needed some gum work. Late 2008, he was in severe pain and we ended up getting him some long overdue gum surgery. This involved some big rounds of antibiotics (helpful for Lyme, but they hadn’t killed it off over the years) as well as the option of nitrous oxide. He chose to use the nitrous and his symptoms improved exponentially each time he had a dose/gum surgery/periodontal cleaning. It is impossible to calculate how much of his improvement stems from ridding himself of the simultaneous infection in his gums that diverted his immune system from treating the Lyme … and how much direct improvement he received from the nitrous oxide itself. Again, this is controversial, but if you or someone you know suffers gum disease or dental issues AND has Lyme, you might at least want to get rid of the secondary infection.

Heat Some people have been known to inject themselves with malaria in order to overcome Lyme Disease — a fact that gives the unknowing some idea of just how devastating and desperate life with Lyme can seem. I spoke with a naturopath about this phenomenon and he told me that it’s the fever associated with malaria that does the trick. “If it doesn’t kill you, it kills the Lyme.” Some people use far-infrared saunas for similar results. Stephen and I just “lucked” into an odd situation in our new home. His office is on the upper level in what would normally be the master bedroom. While the downstairs stays cool during the day, the upstairs feels like a slow-cook oven. H-O-T, also known as miserably, unbelievably hot, even while the rest of the house stays quite cool in the Northern CA summer. Whatever lingering spirochetes he may have had when we moved in seem to have disappeared the more time he’s spent in the steamy upstairs. For this reason, we opted not to get a window A/C unit. I do keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn’t get heat exhaustion, and I give him coconut water to balance his electrolytes, but oddly enough, the heat seems to have done him a world of good.

Raw Foods As many of you know, I am the author of The Lazy Raw Foodist’s Guide, and in there I share that Stephen is not a raw foodist. He does, however, eat plenty of salads and drink the occasional juice. He also spent years drinking a “witch’s brew” of oil of oregano, prima una de gato, teasel root and liquid cholorophyll. Raw foods and chlorophyll alkalize the system, and Lyme Disease likes an acidic system. As mentioned above, I’ve known raw foodies who got Lyme anyway, but anything that alkalizes does create a less welcoming environment for spirochetes.

Colostrum Stephen sometimes takes this and at one point relied on it heavily. This is not a vegan product, but some vegans have opted to include it in their Lyme arsenal because it does seem to boost the immune system in a major way. Combined with Bach Flower Rescue Remedy, at one time Colostrum would instantly resolve any Lyme rage or Lyme anxiety, both common side effects of neurological Lyme.

Goji Juice High quality, pure goji juice seemed to boost Stephen’s immune system, but we stopped using it because the sugars coated his teeth and aggravated his gums. Some Lyme folks swear by goji juice or goji tea, though.

Probiotics Since most Lyme sufferers get hit with multiple rounds of intense antibiotics, some strong probiotics — from the refrigerated section — help to rebuild the gut. Keeping the intestinal flora balanced helps the body to fight any and all illnesses.

Chaga I have heard good things about chaga — another medicinal mushroom — but I haven’t given it to Stephen since I have him on so many other supplements right now and he’s asymptomatic. From an energetic perspective, chaga does seem to have a polar opposite vibe of Lyme Disease, so finding a sugar-free version may really help. I know David Wolfe has recommended chaga as a rebuilder of the immune system, and I’ve tried it myself. I don’t know any Lyme folks who’ve used it, though, so my comments here are based primarily on my energetic read of the plant.

I hope this post gives some people a place to start. I do not sell any of these products, and I am not wed to any particular brand. If you decide to research the products themselves, please take time to research brand quality on your own. I’ve just listed these items as a service since I know how difficult it can be to find diagnosis and treatment for Lyme Disease. Stephen’s doctors told us that if I hadn’t used alternative treatments on him he might have died before they recognized what was really going on. (He had Lyme meningitis.) His illness initially did not show up in blood tests — very common with Lyme — and no one would prescribe any antibiotics. In the case of Lyme, the antibiotics do seem to help, but the immune building herbs and mushrooms offer extra potent ways of rejuvenating the body and raising it from the realm of spirochetes to the realm of wholeness and bliss. Combined with life-path assessments, anger release and self-love, physical treatment offers real hope in the face of a growing epidemic.

Blessings!

I should also add that Stephen has been the recipient of tons of Reiki, both from me and from my many compassionate students who generously sent Reiki when they learned of his illness. He has likely received at least six healing attunements and dozens of hours of Reiki, especially around the time he had so much pain with his gums. He has also been on my mom’s prayer list at various times during his ordeal. It all helps, and Reiki offers a wonderful chance to relax, as well as a way to give help without attachment to the outcome. Reiki is not about the person giving it. Reiki is universal life force energy or “divinely directed healing energy.” However you translate it, Reiki brings a sense of calm, peace and a deeper chance to heal on all levels.

Thank you for taking the time, deep care, love and compassion to share this entry. There’s such great information we could all use. Not only for the products though. But also for the spirit of hope, faith and exploring avenues that are somewhat hidden at times from our normal day to day awareness. Thanks to both you and Stephen for sharing your story. With Love and Blessings, Giacinta

Thank you so much for this post. I was recently tested for Lyme and was quite surprised as it has been years since I’ve been bitten by a tick, yet here are all these symptoms surfacing. In trying to better understand the “why now” aspect, what you’ve written above is helpful and I find I relate to many of your observations. Thankfully my symptoms are not as severe as it appears you husband had. I am currently working with a naturopath to create a healing protocol (w/o antibiotics) and am encouraged that your husband did not need months/years of antibiotics to heal. Much gratitude to you and continued health to both you and your husband.

    Hi Metta,
Blessings to you on your own journey. Just to be clear, Stephen did take antibiotics for some of that time, as well. We just found that they weren’t completely solving the problem. Once we added the other things, changed some lifestyle aspects and built up his immune system, then he no longer needed the antibiotics. We were then able to rebuild with the probiotics. Some people do heal w/o antibiotics, but for Stephen, that was still a part of the bigger picture.
Peace and good healing to you!

I am hoping that I’ve healed from lyme through addressing all aspects of the self. I have been able to release old anger and resentment and worked with healing old wounds. Bush flower essence and EFT really helped as did Japenese knotweed and teasel (and the rest) Fingers crossed and thanks for your article, nice to read that somewhere someone is making sense of these crazy things that happen to us.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciated reading this post. I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease earlier this year; prior to diagnosis I experienced years of unexplained symptoms that took away a lot of the best years of my life all through my teens and 20’s!

I am now 32 and trying to get back on my feet. It’s hard to be patient but when I read this post I honestly felt like it was the first time someone actually “got” exactly what it was I’ve felt and experienced through out the years and never been able to express. It truly made me feel for the first time like this “curse” can actually be a learning experience asking me to return the love to myself I have always given to others. Having Lyme has certainly changed my life. Many times it has been so difficult for me to see the “positive effects” of losing my job, car, income, home, creativity and vitality. Yet after reading your post I began to feel that it could also be a blessing in disguise and that there could be a silver lining. My prayer is that those afflicted with Lyme continue to grow stronger every day and continue to heal. I believe that overcoming this illness forever is possible for everyone who suffers and I refuse to give up that hope.

Thank you for your thoughtful insights, and for the spiritual and emotional support. I feel that reading this has really made me take a turn in how I view myself and my own personal path to healing. Thank you.

I have been undergoing a creative and spiritual awakening with Lyme and CFS..and I agree with the ‘healer’s disease’ aspect. It’s me all over…everything you said. I’ve become the photographer I’ve always wanted to be, the artist is coming out, the poet and musician in me is finding a stronger voice and most importantly I am becoming close to God and finding the joy in Him. Lyme and CFS has given me the blessing to release all the joy that has been hiding inside me for so long. I’ve experienced many mini-miracles the last few days and now you have confirmed what I needed to hear to set me on my path and stick to my guns with herbal remedies. All is well! Thank you and God bless you. Maria.

I just came across your blog which is wonderful…thank you!! As a Lyme and cojnfection sufferer I feel like I just read about myself. It has been a lengthy adventure that I wouldn’t give back because I have learned so much. I have spent several months working with an energy healer which has benefitted me profoundly on every level. But I am still trying to attain balanced health and I am wondering if I need to dig deeper to learn/solidify the lessons from this. Whenever I want to jump back into my life my health pulls me back down as if to say “not so fast”. Is there always more to heal?
It’s wonderful that your husband has regained his health! Be well!

Thanks, Alex. Yes, I am always pleased when people share their healing stories and that so many have healing stories to share! If life is saying “not so fast,” then perhaps you have missed a part of the healing message. Symptoms generally tend to resolve when we no longer need them as messengers. Sometimes they do act as “bumpers,” keeping people on track. I know with my own brain injury, I live the life of a fully recovered person, but it is a very specific (and rather magickal) life path. I don’t desire to deviate from this path, so it’s not a problem, but whenever I do find myself being inserted into “ordinary” life, very old symptoms pop up as a reminder or notice to get back on the intended path. For me, it’s usually just a gentle nudge, but I’ve come to appreciate the guidance and discipline when “life” might be pushing me in a not-so-great direction. Symptoms can be a blessing when we generally surf above them. But if they are interfering with your intended path, then there is likely still more to unearth. 🙂

Wow! I completely, one-hundred-percent agree with your description of typical personality types of lyme sufferers. I am a sensitive, psychic, gifted healer, with strong artistic abilities, but not confident, so gave these things up for the practical. Then I got lyme. After a short course of antibiotics, I thought lyme was out of my system. Then I got asthma. Now the lyme symptoms are raging, so I realize that I probably never really got rid of it. Strangely, new symptoms showed up during reiki attunements. Perhaps it will bring deeper healing. Yes, anger plays into it. I have so far failed finding a good MD to “treat” me. I pray, eat good fats, do much inner work and feel better. Hope you are right that the healing will come when all lessons have been learned!

Blessings in your recovery! Yes, the healing comes when all lessons have been learned. It can come gradually, though. 🙂 You don’t need to learn every single lesson at once in order to start feeling much better. The Reiki attunement symptoms sound like a Herx reaction to the powerfully cleansing and vibration raising experience. All the things you’re doing are good things. Remember, Lyme is a vibrational disease. Everything is, but Lyme in particular, seems to respond well to raising your vibration completely out of the frequency of Lyme. All the best to you … Laura

i have a son who has lyme
The biggest common denominator seems to be that Lyme arrives when some anger has gone unexpressed and when self-love does not match the degree of love and blessings these folks spread into the world. The anger may stem from an anger at the way society treats the disenfranchised, or it may stem from early child abuse; it may relate to seething resentment from a relationship or series of relationships; it may come from a feeling that life has unfairly passed the person by even though they’ve sacrificed a lot to serve others. YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!! – THIS NOT THE BIGGEST COMMON DENOMINATOR BY A LONG SHOT! and shame on you for even suggesting that lyme arrives (when anger has gone unexpressed)

BE CAREFUL what you suggest to people!! and when you suggest cures! EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! and clearly YOU MY FRIEND – NO NOTHING ABOUT the people WHO TRULEY suffer from this illness!

I know how difficult it can be to find diagnosis and treatment for Lyme Disease. Stephen’s doctors told us that if I hadn’t used alternative treatments on him he might have died before they recognized what was really going on.

i am happy to hear about Stevens treatments helping him! GOD BLESS — BUT AGAIN to remotely suggest that a person could die with-out these treatments IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!

UNLESS YOU MY DEAR have a medical degree I WOULD SUGGEST you stick to ENGLISH and stay away from post a blog that could give ANYONE — FALSE hopes or worse – could do them much harm in thier fight against this AWFUL ILLNESS!

Wow, Russ! I’m sorry you had such a negative reaction to my article. As I mentioned in the article, I am not a doctor and I am just sharing personal experience from my ex-husband’s fight with and recovery from Lyme, as well as the many clients I’ve worked with as a coach and/or medical intuitive. The direct lines from the article are: “Please remember, I am NOT a doctor. I am not offering medical advice here. I’m just sharing some things that have worked well for Stephen and/or for other Lyme survivors. I would never want anyone to suffer unnecessarily, so I’m offering some ideas here, which you can research on your own to see if they resonate with you. I am in no way affiliated with any of these supplements.” Clearly the suggestions don’t resonate with YOU, and that’s ok.

Also, it was Stephen’s doctor who suggested he could have died without the alternative treatments. He had gone to the emergency room with meningitis symptoms and received a shot of Rocephin. When Stephen’s new doctor saw how high his spirochete count actually was — even after he had majorly improved — he apologized on behalf of the VA Medical System, which had previously denied the possibility of him having Lyme Disease. There is such a thing as Lyme Meningitis. Look it up, if you doubt me. Usually, Lyme Meningitis is less severe than other forms, but in Stephen’s case he was very, very sick. The VA gave him the shot of Rocephin because they didn’t know what else to do and his bizarre ER visits for that year tended to lessen if they gave him antibiotics. Since they would not give him extended courses until he paid for his own reliable Lyme testing, his bacteria load needed to be kept in check with herbal antibiotics. Yes, there is such a thing. Again, I am not diagnosing or prescribing, but the facts of the matter are that a) his doctor asked me for my protocol because he was impressed Stephen had survived some of the severest stages of the infection and b) everything I share here is easily enough researched on the internet or in Lyme forums and support groups. I wrote the article as a service, nothing more, nothing less.

If you knew how many private emails I receive from people each week regarding this article sounding like their “own autobiography,” you would know that for most of the people I’ve ever encountered with Lyme (and I grew up in PA and have lived in WI, OR, WA and northern CA — all high endemic areas) the unexpressed anger element is very common. I’ve mentioned that people need to do their own research on all of these supplements and have made it clear I’m not diagnosing or prescribing. Clearly the suggestions and descriptions in this article don’t resonate with you, although I’d be curious to know if they resonate with your son. I wrote the article for those who will find it helpful. Blessings to you and your son. I hope he finds what he needs to heal.

  24. Amazing! I really love it when the universe allows me to find what I need – I just stumbled in and this article has been a great joy for me to read.

I Have always noticed in the past when I have become ill, that there is a great benefit to it. Vibrationally, it launches me into a strong wanting of wellness. (obviously) but the great benefit is, when I start feeling better from the sickness I spring forward into a state of blissful appreciation – for my body, for being alive, for loving so many things… For knowing that the state I truly want to be in – is a healthy one. My intentions and directions become very clear to me and I truly appreciate that clarity.

Now that experience so far has only ever come from something viral or the latest bug going around – but now three months into my lymes adventure, i am almost kind of excited to see where this crazy experience launches me!

Just when I thought I had plateaued on inner work, I am asked to do more, I am asked to reach higher, dig deeper, look closer, quieter – expand more.

Life and all its contrasts are all gifts – you just have to undoubtably always see them that way.

Lots and lots of love to you!!

I was just diagnosed with Lyme Disease last week and given Minocycline antibiotics as well as probiotics and a detoxing formula. The reason my holistic health care professional chose the Minocycline was because it passes the blood/brain barrier and heals much faster. The odd thing on my labs is my B12 was extremely low and she would not let me leave the office until I had a shot and promise to chew 5000 mcg lozenges everyday until that comes up. I have felt pretty whack since beginning this and she told me it might feel like a war going on inside my body for awhile as it fights the bacteria. I know that your article was not by accident and just emailed a Reiki Master friend to send me all the positive energy he could. Any vibrations you are getting on me feel free to share as I am open to what the energies are doing and changing me into. I went from being a driven single mother real estate broker who sent herself thru college evolving into something more creative so you pegged that one as I approach my 51st birthday on February 22. Its funny how our priorities change when its time. Thanks so much for sharing and letting us into your inner circle. Love, light and blessings to you Maria and your family.

Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story and best wishes for your recovery! It is definitely a journey. If you are wanting a more personalized reading you would need to schedule a private session, but the general information covers a lot of the areas affected. I see a fair amount of B12 deficiency and have written on that before, as well as given talks about it. I’m glad your doctor caught that! Blessings and healing, Laura

Thank you so much for the beautifully written article, and I have to tell you that it rings so true for me! I am currently working with a wonderful naturopath and on doxycycline and a host of supplementation while building up my immune system, but I seem to be a stubborn healer. I suffered years of abuse as a child, but did not begin to deal with it until my 20’s….I was a bright, highly creative child, always in the “gifted” program at school, and then around 12 or 13 there were a few highly traumatic events involving adults in my life violating me sexually and threatening me with violence. Because none off the “healthy” adults in my life protected me or sought treatment for me at that time, I internallized a great deal of what had happened to me, and my young life started to spirall downwards…I became a mediocre student, didn’t care about what used to be important to me, but still managed to be as creative as possible, much to the dismay of the adults around me who seemed to have other plans for me. I fell into the hands of some bad boyfriends in my late teens/early 20’s, but then, mercifully, a wonderful man came into my life and we married when I was 25. Ten years into our marriage, we have two wonderfully healthy children, and I have been working on my healing path for about the past 10-12 years (note, it was not until I began to feel I was worthy of it, did a wonderful partner come into my life). Also, right at about this same time, I started breaking out in rashes on my back, chest, and neck, suffering from horrible brain fog, thyroid enlargement, adrenal fatigue and a whole host of other symptoms- it was not until I found my current doc that we figured out there is some lyme in there, as sort of my last roadblock to healing. BUT- what spoke to me so loudly in your article is how I have roadblocked my own creativity that used to be so prevalent in my life- I feel like I will do more when life slows down, etc….wow- that really speaks to where I am at! Amazing. So- I have come very far, but still have a LONG way to go. I would love to find some reiki practitioners in my area. I need to start seeing my therapist again to help to release some of the anger issues that still come up. Thank you for sharing this story that seems to be so very relevant to so many. It is truly a blessing!

Thanks for that…will certainly be looking into some of the herbals you have suggested. i’m wondering if some of the ‘anger’ the Lyme ‘sufferer’ exhibits is because of the circumstances and the treatment they have received before finding the right practitioner for them…just curious..I am too in the healing game and am a painter..and was a surfer and very very active….I too have carried anger..generally expressed and straight back at the perceived cause, in a non threatening way…but definitely acknowledged and expressed..I do get angry and frustrated at the seeming inability of some GPs, and continue my journey into better health than I had before I contracted this..I am combining protocols, have regular body/energy treatments and simply move forward..thanks Teri..:)

      Hi Teri,
Thanks for commenting and sharing some of your story. Yes, I am sure the treatment by GP’s and unknowledgeable treatment providers plays a role in the anger. I have found that there is often a very deep underlying anger that precedes that, though. Sometimes it’s not even from this lifetime; other times from early childhood or a traumatic war experience. I know quite a few veterans with Lyme Disease, and the rage at what they saw and/or felt forced to participate in definitely helps keep that LD multiplying. Total forgiveness and a cultivation of peace seems essential to full healing–for most things, but especially things like Lyme.
      Blessings,

I have had lyme for six years and have taken antibiotics and supplements on and off during that time. I am in really bad shape right now because I haven’t been doing anything for it. I guess I just gave up. This morning I woke feeling so down and after reading your post you completely lifted my spirits and given me the strength to get going with my healing again. Thank you so much.

  31. This article was an absolute blessing to me when I came upon it today. 6 wks ago I was diagnoised at the local ER w Lyme and given the usual 3 wks of Doxcy. I was got labs back from follow up testing and I’m still very Lyme positive. So just started round two of Doxy. I’m actually grateful ny tests were positive VS the all too common false negatives, which lead to months or yrs of sufferring. I’m learning the fact that I was a few wks into the illness probably helped serve me re test results. Even though early treatment is best, from what I read it can later appear that one is Lyme free because the quick treatment doesn’t allow antibodies to show up. So, one ay still have Lyme, but no antibodies=no antibiotics.

The reason I didn’t go to the ER till I was 3 wks or so intomy symptoms is because I simply thought I was havin a flare up of my CFS/Fibro. Since the physical and vibrational felt exactly like Lyme, I’m now asking how related they are. From what I’ve readthey are VERY related. I’ve suffered from acheiness/flu-like symptoms off and on for yrs since the early 80’s. Back then I exercised regularly and wondered if that was the cause. During routine checkups I’d request labs for vit/min levels, thyroid, and also for EBV Epstein Barr Virus which was just making the news back then. It wouldn’t be till much later in life 2004, when I would get a diagnosis of CFS, FIBROMYALGIA, EBV (like I suspected in 82), NARCOLEPSY, both antigens associated with, and lastly antibodies for BARTONELLA, 2 strains of antibodies for a previous infection that was never diagnosed. I’m greatful my recent Lyme labs didn’t show positive for an tick borne co-infecions. However, like you mentioned Laura my vit B12 was low. aka low-normal.

Eventually in 2006, after 2 yrs of positive thinking, treatments, massages, meditation, medication I was simply too fatigued to continue working and raising my then 6 yr old son as an older single mom. (Im almost 54 now, he will be 12 in a few months.) I went on disability, my ID doc forecasted that it would be permanent. In my hopefull thinking, I thought this illness cant be forever…..well, to date I’ve never had a symtom free period, let alone a reprieve where I could consider work even part time. I enjoyed my work too. The bggest issue for me is that even the slighest exertion from basic errands/household tasks bring about a flare up, also called exertion relape, which btw is mental aka brain fog as well as physical. Generally speaking a rare but productive day, or just a ride to a family cookout results in a few days of needed rest, and getting nothin done. I have no social life, and I actually rest up prior to the rare function I may attend. Cancellations are always a relief, that way I don’t have to feel bad for not attending yet another function of people I care about, which leads to guilt and further isolation on my art. People get funny about that stuff.

Over the past 6 wks since my Lyme diagnosis I’ve scoured the web reading anything I can to learn about this disease. I’ve learned about the enept tests, false negatives, the politics of this illness amongst the medical community concerning not Lyme’s existence but Chronic Lyme. I’ve had a crash course in microbiology on spirochettest ;the bacteria that causes horrible Lyme symptoms and how clever they are in hiding, from ,antibiotics and our immune system. They morph, shapeshift and can remain inactive for periods of time….Talk about smart bacteria!

Fast forward to the points that Laura shared, After cramming my head w info, I began asking about the spiritual meaning of Lyme in my life, because I’ve always been a deep, seeker, esoteric type person. As I reviewed myself, I also noticed a reoccuring theme in people on the Lyme forums, They seem smart, caring, capable, talented even gifted, and very spiritual despite their ongoing daily, monthly or even yearly struggle w Lyme. I saw myself in them. I began to review my past friendships, relationships, many had the energy vampire theme. Like the tick, energy vampires feed till they get their fill (like a bl0od bath) then they leave you drained wondering what happened. Similarly to the tick who I never saw or felt! Do I have HOST writen on my forehead or within my vibrational pattern? I think I do. Just the irony of a tick bite struck me, because I barely leave my house due to fatigue. That stood out for me, like it was a messanger from the earth who came to me…..maybe for a reason?purpose? It’s not like I was in a meadow of tall grass! I also read that someone wrote a book about the gift of Lyme and used a similar example of the messanger tick, sorry don’t recall author or title to give credit to.

Also to Laura’s point re: evolved souls perhaps needing an extra push to thwart them forward on their path. How brilliant that an equally evolved bacteria would be needed to assist an evolved human foreward? That’s pretty fascinating to me. Laura I think your spiritual and objective observations regarding the spiritual implications of Lyme disease are spot on! You are so gifted, and your article caused me to sob so deeply and intensely as you validated my exact intuitions. It was a purging and a healing and helped lift me from a slight case of self pity as I go into round two of my Lyme battle. That feeling you touched on re: loving people feeling a little short changed. Knowing how good I am at what I use to dom yet being unable to do it. I also reviwed the reoccurring theme in my life w my other so called “invisible illnesses” and the discrimination that can go with them. I asked myself am I too be an advocate or sorts for the disenfranchanized, just like you said. Even my personal political beliefs contain those sentiments, which is why I get passionate on that topic as well.

Laura, thank you so much I want to pass this info on via your link. Id like info n your private readings. I fel I’m at a point in my spiritual journey where this will make or break me. The battle of fatigue alone will rob my will to be proactive, or my spiritual will, and prayer will lead me to the answers, and treatments that I need to prevail. That spirity served me today when I did a web search :”spiritual implications of Lyme disease” I hope I can alter my vibrational pattern!

    With love, light, and gratitude,

    Marie Sprowl

Just want to say I resonate with your article a lot. I myself have been on a journey of purging deep anger and hatred and a lot of habits associated with protection. We all have strategies that we form I suppose and I had some that were contributing to my suffering daily. I came to find a spiritual practice since I contracted Lyme, and that has eased symptoms remarkably in itself. While I spent years trying every mode of healing or spiritual experience I never settled on a practice until now. I do my practice when I get a flare. Seems to clear much easier. I notice the foods I eat when I have too many feelings coming up seem to arouse the flares. Sugar was one. What I’m getting at is that yes its not just a bacterial infection, but its definitely been a road to awakening for me. As I improve I make deep changes. I am a healer and an artist and I agree that my own stifled creativity has also caused so much suffering and illness as well. I don’t often get to make the Art I long to make because it costs money to get materials to work how I want to work. My job takes all my energy and then I have none left when I come home. Had a studio couldn’t afford to keep it. The list goes on. All great excuses that go a long way to continue to not be doing what I love. ANyway without divulging too much personal history I just wanted to say thanks for writing this article because this is how I’ve seen it and its the first time I’ve heard this perspective so clearly expressed. Many blessings to you and yours….

    about anger,
my life was not so bad prior, and when I got soooo sick with lyme
    my world turned upside down
everything in my life became ruined, I was not in control, finances to get well, etc

so then the anger became of years of such phyiscal pain, etc,
I went to therapy for the stuff in the past, and then I went again when i got sick
but did not know I Had lyme, I couldnt remember much, so that batch of therapy was for nothing. lol

the anger i have is from what lyme has done to me, it has totally destroyed me,my life

so for me, it is a cycle, that , now seems to never end

    😦

Lyme affects everyone differently, and unless one has it, they have no idea

I use to be intuned ,spiritual, and things were going well so, I will never understand how, why I got soooo ill

my kitchen counter looks like a mini health food store

nothing thus far has worked, it is discouraging

but about the anger, lyme, is just not fair….

lyme is it;s own beast, has it’s own negative frequency to it

and so many great people become a host to it

    • I am sorry for your struggles with Lyme. I do understand the frustration of years and years of intense pain, ruined life plans, and no treatment that works, as I went through that with my brain injury and watched my ex-husband go through it with Lyme. There IS hope, though! I have a lot of clients who either called me because they had Lyme or who just happen to have Lyme and wanted help with other things. There ARE people turning this disease around. Finding ways, ANY ways, to move through the anger can help lift you out of the vibration of the disease. Part of the Catch 22 of Lyme is that the negative emotions keep you locked in the Lyme frequency. Whatever you can do to ease the anger, soothe the soul, move through the emotional component, really does help people turn the corner of healing. Blessings to you, Laura

What a bizarre feeling it was as my foot had bloated a few times – real horror show – my foot and leg felt wooden and foreign. After being misdiagnosed then getting the right test done I was given Doxy. On my sister’s advice, I doubled the doctor’s dosage and it seemed to stop the Lyme from getting worse but I was far from feeling better. I found some sage advice that brought me to a good acupuncturist. After two visits I am almost back to normal. One more treatment and I think I’ll be there. I highly recommend the needle treatment but I have to ask Will my Lyme ever go away fully? Thanks for your article and good luck everyone.

  43. Excellent article. I bookmarked it for future reference.
I moved out of upstate NY where I was bit in 1987. My hubby worked in the health dept at the time so got it off and took it into the lab who gave a positive ID for Ixodes Damini.
Long story short, treatment back then was paltry as no one ‘knew’ what was effective.
Fast forward to 1998 when I moved to New Mexico and contracted lyme encephalitis ended up in PCU, to be told I didn’t have the diagnosed hunta virus, I had lyme disease! No fooling? Well who knew what is was there?
I flew back to NY to get treatment from Rich Horowitz, MD a national lyme specialist and who I knew for years. We worked together.
    The cure?
I threw out all antibiotics..Put the herbs on hold; I used the power of Mind to throw out the spirochetes and their co-infectors.
I stopped limping, aching, swelling, and the malaise left.
Whenever I am under stress and I ‘feel’ those buggers wanting to break out of their cysts, I use the Power of MInd again and say as Gandolph did to the necromancer on the bridge, “You shall not pass!”.
It works folks. Takes practice and sheer Will but it works.

  45. Thank you so much, Laura. I’m going to check into getting your book. I’ve gone a number of rounds with Lyme, but like the Mob; just when I think I’m done with it, it pulls me back in, in another configuration, and so for a time I don’t know what I’m dealing with, and then I realize — “Ah…I wasn’t done yet, or it wasn’t done with me.” The current configuration is intestinal, all the stuff happening in my lower abdomen. I had been happily using Teasel Root with great response (so wonderfully put my knee pain behind me), but then it happened that my body would no longer tolerate Teasel. I am learning with this experience. One of the things I’m learning is: who and what do I trust? I trust my experience. Experience is more powerful than belief. Even if the main stream thinks I’m crazy, I know my experience.

Laura, Thank You! I contracted Lyme in March of 2012 in NY. I was very sick within 3 days of the bite and diagnosed on day 3 by an Urgent Care Dr. The Doxy was life changing. I felt clear headed like I had not since middle school. Doxy taught me that I was still an intelligent person AND that something was very wrong and had been very wrong for a long time. Since last spring I have had a few awful relapses and a ‘Positive/Negative we wont give you any more Doxy’ Western Blot. I switched to herbs and then quit in month 2 despite the success. The protocol included many from your list here. I used the excuse of money and loosing my job. However, I feel that you have brought up many very accurate (for me) points. My latest relapse began with pain and turned into an anxiety/madness episode about a week ago. I was left feeling terribly alone, angry, and bruised. I have even been trying to scare off a man from my past because I think he deserves better than someone trying to stay afloat with rocks tied to her ankles. YES I am angry and I have shoved it down to keep a job and try and feel apart of a community. I have visions of the crazy old woman ostracized among the trees racking her fingers into the soil unaware of her bloody nails. I would say that this train you started is on the tracks.

    Thanks Again!

    Hi!
I have recently been through a “mini health hell”, but am now back out and up!!!
I had a Lyme relapse, and thought maybe I had been re-infected by a tick.
Turns out I had an anxiety attack instead, that caused my immune system to go into over drive. While I was having my health crisis, my dog Gabriel got sick too, and I thought he might have Lyme because of his limping and fatigue- turns out he does!
I now have a theory that my dog was empathing my illness, and was depressed at not having more of our regular hikes, in addition to probably having Lyme in his body, as most dogs probably do.

Anyway, in the process of figuring all this health stuff out, I have gained some valuable, practical and assuring new knowledge-
My homeopathic MD, confirmed that I had chosen the right homeopathic remedy for my dog, Ledum, to treat his Lyme. He also said that any time I thought I might have a tick bite that I am concerned about infection from, to do 3 things, as a precaution:
    1) Squeeze the tick bite until it bleeds
    2) Put honey on it and bandage it (do not use disinfectants like alcohol, as this weakens the body’s natural immunity in the skin)
    3) Take the homeopathic remedy Ledum (I am not sure how to advise potency, as he only told me how to treat my dog- ask a homeopath)

My doctor has lived in an area with high incidence of Lyme and has dealt with ticks his whole life and never had a problem.

I just wanted to share this, as I feel excited and empowered to have this bit of information; I don’t want to have to worry or hide from ticks, being a super nature lover!

    • Thanks, Mia, So glad you’re feeling better. I’m going to pass this along to the three friends who went plant hunting in the woods with me, as I was the only one not to get bitten by a tick. Of course, prior to going into the woods, I made certain my vibration was out of tick range, and I had on loads of essential oils, which they don’t like. I ended up with zero issues, but both dogs and all other people had ticks. Many thanks!

Which essential oils work for you? I have tried rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, mint, patchouli- mostly because I wear these normally, but I have heard they work for some people ( I mostly wear them individually, not combined…)
My doctor says I have a certain smell ticks like, coming from my body chemistry…
Until I have changed my vibration, I guess I have to use other tactics/methods.

Just a little update from my homeopath on the Lyme prevention, Tick Bite Protocol-

“Yes, I recommend Ledum 200c if there is a new tick bite. I also recommend squeezing the bite site to express any fluid or serum and then applying a bandage with raw honey on top and leaving it on for at least 24 hours. The honey is extremely important because it functions as an antibiotic, plus it has an extremely high osmotic index that pulls fluids, toxins, bacteria and microbes directly out of the bite site.”

Also, after one or two days of giving the Ledum 200c to my dog, he was back to his normal bright eyed, prancing, happy self! His leg had been dangling with a limp, and he had trouble standing up, as well as lethargy.

    This works!!! 🙂

    “Hi Mia,
That would be fine. Just make sure you make it clear that when you squeeze the tick bite, this is done after the tick is removed!
It doesn’t matter to me anonymous or named.”

I just thought that I would like to highly recommend Dr Ronald Whitmont to any of your Lyme readers who might be looking for treatment.

He is a homeopathic MD, and is a LLMD (Lyme literate doctor), who uses homeopathy to treat his patients.
He prescribes one medicine at a time, which is so nice not to take a ton of supplements, vitamins and remedies every day! (at one time I was up to close to 20!) He is also available for phone consultations for treating long distance.
Dr Whitmont is very intelligent, full of integrity, insightful, a wonderful listener, kind, gives great medical advice and personal advice, and cares for and treats the whole person.
He has been a huge support in my life, and I have made a lot of progress in the past two years with his treatment. I have been learning a lot about myself, and healing, through his counseling, and patient support.
I have a tremendous respect for Dr Whitmont and feel that he is a very valuable resource for people with Lyme; as well as a model of what an authentic, educated, and quality doctor can be. To me, Dr Whitmont, through his personality/style, and education and background, bridges and combines both the scientific/rational/physical aspects of health and healing, with the emotional, mental and spiritual realms.

Thanks Laura, for being such a supporter and resource for Lyme people, and for sharing information on your blog 🙂

Hi Laura~ I hope you’re doing well. I was wondering if you know of people who have fully recovered or mostly healed from chronic Lyme. I’ve had some dramatic experiences and breakthroughs lately with my self/health, but am now feeling so much pain, and I haven’t sorted out what internal and external things are causing this to happen (i have some sense of what’s going on but don’t know for sure)…..I need some inspiration to believe it’s possible to really leave this pain and illness….I so feel like I deserve it, and have worked so hard…. If I were to schedule a session with you, what would be the most beneficial kind, for health insights? Thanks so much, and blessings to you! ❤ Mia

  64. My sister Sara just got the lab results saying she has Lyme Disease. She had been bitten by a tick and saw a Doctor right away. The Doctor didn’t give her enough antibiotics, but made the family feel everything was taken care of. So I didn’t research the illness, and silently hoped nothing would come of it. We forgot, and when my sister started getting strange symptoms, we had no idea why. Now she is taking the best alternative cure (some form of coconut oil, and something to break the cysts). She tells me it is the best alternative cure. She will still take the standard medication. I sent her a link to this page. (If you are reading the comments, “Hi Sara.”) Along with the New York Times article you linked to.

  65. One of my brothers-in law walked around for 5 years with Lyme – completely missed by the medical establishment which had put him through many tests. Once the correct diagnosis was made a little “past life review” on my brother’s part made him realize that 5 years earlier he has hosted a tick for several days before discovery. He had to go through a year or longer on antibiotics – sometimes on IV drip – to get rid of it entirely, but it wasn’t until he also added naturopathic stuff that he really regained some of the functions that had been damaged by the spirochetes.

I too have become a fan of sweating for general health and have one of those sauna tents that is used at least twice a week in the winter. In Arkansas summers just being outdoors makes you sweat enough to feel healthy. I have to suspect that our tropical origins predispose us to sweating for overall health, though there are of course some medical conditions for which it is not recommended. It’s also, for me anyway, a very effective way to control blood pressure by managing sodium levels in the body.

    • Hi Bo, yes, you’re so right about the sweating! We got a BioMat (Mini size) in 2013, and it has settings from almost zero heat all the way up to far infrared sauna levels. When I got Lyme (late 2012), I was able to cure it quickly with both teasel root and spending about three months using the second highest heat setting which is still in that sauna range. I must have needed it, because now (or even winter 2014), I rarely want(ed) to go even to the third level, whereas back then every day, my body just insisted that I go nearly full tilt for at least an hour, if not more, at a time. Sweat cures many things! Glad your brother in law is feeling much better and that you’ve found a natural blood pressure control.

I’m not a doctor, so my work focuses much more on helping people move beyond the energetic patterns, signatures, and messages of Lyme Disease, but it’s good to see someone of Dr. Mercola’s stature and reach addressing LD. Thanks to G for posting this piece, which contains a lot of information. For more on prevention, holistic treatments and energy/life path issues, you can find related articles by clicking here. I happened to stumble on this post, and the entire thread is a great example of the blind leading the blind to potential disaster. The initial article is replete with bad advice, and the responses tend to glorify its uninformed point of view. Lyme disease, a bacterial infection by Borrelia burdorferi, is easily treated with antibiotics, including doxycycline and/or azithromycin. Otherwise one runs the risk of a permanently debilitating infection that can result in impairment of brain and motor functions. Reiki and dietary supplements will have few positive effects on the course of the bacterial pathogenesis.

Thank you so much for this article. I needed to read it. It confirms much of what I have come to believe is true about healing from Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a soul sickness and a path to spiritual transformation. I’m still in the trenches, and I have not yet been able to paint. I found your description of “who gets Lyme” so beneficial. Everything you described is true for myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Please to all relatives ,friends and just people who know anyone with Lyme, BELIEVE THEM. Its like a knife in the hearth when people do not take you seriusly, when they tell you its just psycological. People with Lyme need a lot of love and understanding, many people with lyme kill themselves after loosing hope.

    • Yes, thanks Josh, this is what I told a group of doctors at a Lyme disease conference in 2011. Don’t make people spend their energy arguing for their illness. Believe them so they can put all their energy towards healing!

What are your thoughts on myself and then a year later my two year old getting Lyme from a tick. We live in a tick infested area.

    • Hi Erinn,
I’m not sure what you’re asking. It is certainly a common enough thing to get Lyme disease in tick infested areas, so if you’re asking if it is possible, then yes, it is within the realm of possibility. There have been some studies indicating Lyme spirochete a pass thru breast milk, too. I’m not sure if that is relevant, but some types apparently do transfer that way.
If you would like more specific insights related just to you, that would require a medical intuitive session. This post is just general information. 🙂
      Wishing you all the best,
      Laura

Hi Laura! Thank you for this blog and sharing this information. I know it’s been such a long time since your post and I see you have been SO kind and generous by still answering people. I just wanted to see if you remember the brand of Colostrum he used? I know Soverign Labs is too notch, but boy it’s expensive, any other brand you saw effectiveness with that isn’t so pricey? Thanks for everything 🙂
