Why Telepathy Makes People Mad

With the growing interest in Animal Communication, uber-bloggers like Steve Pavlina talking to spiders, and more people embracing higher vibration foods, also comes a backlash from people who would rather maintain old boundaries and a “comfortable” sense of separation.  Anger, outrage, scorn and disbelief explode as those who accept (or at least explore) ideas of Oneness make their voices heard in larger and different ways.

Despite diatribes against talking to ants, I really don’t believe people hate bugs that much.  They just don’t want to think of bugs as sentient, conscious beings, because, let’s face it:  if the bugs have feelings and respond to us, then what does that say about animals and humans?  And what about “no see ’ems” like angels, extraterrestrials, spirit guides, and disembodied souls?  When you start talking about bugs as conscious beings with whom we can communicate, you open a whole ‘nother can of (potentially thinking and feeling) worms!

This polarization occurs in areas besides Animal Communication.  My deaf niece Amanda recently received a cochlear implant and for the first time in her life has begun to hear.  I have several contacts in the deaf community, and from what I understand, cochlear implants have become incredibly controversial.  Parts of the deaf community feel that hearing will rob children of the gifts of being deaf, while others laud how technological progress opens possibilities.  Many people have so appreciated my sister-in-law’s careful chronical of Amanda’s journey, because it brings this controvery back to individuals simply documenting their experience.  Their blogs acknowledge the challenges but also share a sense of joy and liberation at Amanda’s growing ability to communicate in different ways.

The controversy of cochlear implants has actually reached the national level, as advances in hearing technology have literally changed expectations and responsibilities for educating the deaf.  Teachers who cannot hear and who communicate with ASL (American Sign Language) only, must now find ways to help students with CI’s embrace other languages and techniques.  People who have never used their own voice must now teach others to use theirs.  How do schools find a balance among so many different levels of hearing, speaking and awareness?  What does it mean to be deaf in 2008?  Emotions on both sides mirror what’s taking place in the world at large.

Consider how communication has changed and expanded exponentially in recent years.  When the World Wide Web initially appeared, some people “got” the potential, but very few could predict just how much it would revolutionize our world.  Within a few short years, “everyone” was online.  Communities like MySpace, Facebook, GI2MR, Twitter, eHarmony, and others have practically eliminated space-time restrictions to communication and relationship.  It’s no longer unusual for folks to have friends on several continents, even if they’ve never left their own country.

The advent of blogging and e-books has further crunched time and space.  We no longer need to wait for publishers and printers to release our messages.  One click of the “publish” or “post” button does the trick, making words, sounds and images immediately available to millions.  Translation software turns language differences into a non-issue, and viral videos like Dancing with the Universe go beyond words altogether.

Even the news media has had to reckon with YouTube.  Primary debates allowed videos from actual voters asking questions of the candidates, and today’s presidential race dodges daily influence from blogs, pirate videos and online fact-checkers. Today, I saw a political analyst on TV, superimposed by his Twitter account with viewers asking him “real-time” questions.

For those of you not familiar with Twitter, it differs from email in that everyone can follow your conversations with everyone else.  Talk about communication transparency!  If you sign up to “follow” someone on Twitter, you can view their “tweets” all day long, along with online archives of all correspondence.  In a sense you merge your consciousness with theirs, past, present and with the opportunity of future tweets. The catch?  The messages must be conveyed in 140 characters or less. Thus, shorthand and abbreviations dominate, just like in animal communication sessions or sign language.  Oddly evocative of Haiku, Twitter encourages its “tweeters” to convey much with little.

Major news programs now request photos and text messages from ordinary people’s cells and Blackberries.  Why?  Because it’s faster; they get immediate coverage. Thus, the desire to crush time as a factor in communication has democratized the news.  Significant enough numbers of people have tired of the elite forms of information distribution.  En masse and individually, they have finally said, “No, thank you” to old boundaries, hierarchies and separation.  They have reclaimed and/or invented new means of communication that transcend the bounds of time and space. The more this happens, the more we’ve moved into COMMUNicatION.  Crunch it just a little more, and you get COMMUNION.  Oneness.

So, why does telepathy make people mad?

Because telepathy means change.  Mainstreaming telepathy means an inevitable collapse of all the boundaries, fences, walls and judgments that keep things separate.  It means lies we tell ourselves and others will become more transparent.  It means intention becomes a more powerful and obvious force.  It means that those whose power comes from secrecy or fear mongering will eventually lose their sway.  Because individuals refuse to be silenced:  man, woman, child, animal, bug, angel, extraterrestrial … they’re all exploring new ways to hear and help themselves be heard.  The intense emotions and attacks in the deaf and Animal Communication arenas only amplify what’s happening everywhere else.

The writing is already on the wall.  And in the blogs.  And paintings and tweets and chat rooms.  I’m reminded here of William Wordsworth:

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
The Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.–Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

In reality, we’re really not that far from universal telepathy. Think about it: fifty years ago, few people thought the deaf would ever hear; fewer people imagined sending “Instant Messages” to people in different time zones; and almost no one expected someone named Steve Pavlina to talk to spiders!

Whether or not people “believe in evolution,” we’re all in it.  Right this very moment, humans and this planet are evolving.  The Mayan Calendar, E.T. channelings and the New Age movement all suggest a movement to the 4th dimension, one in which time functions in a very different way.  One which emphasizes timing more than time.  Synchronicity.  This shift involves a change of vibration, perhaps the very vibration heralded by raw foodists and long time meditators.  In the end, though, it doesn’t really matter which route you choose, because the tide is strong now.

You don’t need to read esoteric spiritual teaching to recognize the forces of change.  Turn on the news.  Look at the stock market.  777 point drop on 9/29?  The US Financial Market in a shambles?  The barriers have already begun to crumble.  CNN’s feature on raw food generated unprecedented interest.  We have a black man in the running for president.  Oprah’s talking about past lives.  You can “tweet” from anywhere.  Technology, Telepathy, Synchronicity, and Oneness. “The Word is very near.  It is in your mouth and in your heart that you may observe it.”

Isn’t it time we do?

  1. Laura —

    Great post here!

    I talk with “no-see-ums” all the time — in fact they call themselves the Communion of Light. And the interaction (I like to think of it as blending) is so powerful and wonderful and helps so many people in numerous ways.

    We are definitely evolving. And it is happening faster and faster. The Communion likes to remind us that the advances in communication are a result of our evolution. We are desiring to become more and more of our divine selves in action, and so we are bringing forth numerous opportunities to connect in ways both seen and unseen.

    As for Steve and his spider buddies, I’ve had my own experience with ants. Based on the writings of Machelle Small-Wright, I learned how to communicate with nature, including insects. Ants are a hive. Individual consciousness is subsumed to the collective.

    A few years ago, some ants decided they wanted to get water from my tap. I gave the colony notice that they needed to move to someplace else. Gave them two weeks and then said I would bring in the Combat disks (which I really dislike). I set out the disks after the two weeks were up and they were still coming around. They were gone the next morning. Which was amazing — it wasn’t the disks (they take several days to work). It was the clear communication.

    I wanted them to be free to go about and do their ant-ly things. And told them so. Just not in my kitchen. So they took off for parts unknown…

    Others may scoff. But if you have had the experience (particularly if you have it day in and day out), then you know it’s real.

    Much love and appreciation,
    Frank

  3. That was mostly a solid article, and thanks for the link, even though I am coming from a “diatribe” that was critical.

    One thing I think your missing is that it is not an issue of being angry, nor does it have to do with the fact that I would feel overwhelming sense of guilt if, in fact, bugs had feelings. It’s more like incredulousness that anyone would think they can.

    I’m someone who doesn’t consider myself even athiest. I am aspiritual. I don’t believe in any of it. I actually think it would be cool if there were any such thing. I think it would be cool if there were any ability to communicate in a psychic fashion, but it is more likely the result of assigning inaccurate cause and effect to occurrences. I have never seen even the slightest shred of evidence to support such claims. And I have TRIED. There is nothing.

    Additionally, history is littered with the remains of those who thought that this was the end times, or the dawn of a new era. It’s just the way people think. A certain segment ALWAYS thinks this is it. This is the great prophecy, and it NEVER has been, so why would today be suddenly different?

    So, why does telepathy make people mad?
    Again. Not mad. Incredulous. Why would something that doesn’t exist make me mad? How can something that isn’t real effect me? It can’t. But I can be astonished, perplexed, and shocked at the fact that otherwise highly intelligent and articulate individuals would continue to adhere to mythology and superstition to explain the complexities of nature. Sometimes it even puts me at a loss for words to think that as advanced as our society and technology have become, people still are quicker to explain seeming coincidences with superstition than with scientific investigation, or at least critical evaluation. But it shouldn’t surprise me.

    The most accurate statement I have ever known in my life is “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” I just wonder if we’ll ever get past the point as a species that we will realize the keys weren’t where we left them because our memory is occasionally unreliable and we didn’t leave them where we thought we did, and it wasn’t because a mischievous fairy moved them.

    So if I’m “mad” about anything it is the lack of critical evaluation. A number of your assumptions are based on the concept that I am refusing to believe something because the consequences of that belief would create a negative and adverse effect in me, but that’s an entirely incorrect evaluation.

    PS, your link to Dancing with the Universe is broken.

    @Julia: Thanks for dropping by and sharing more of your comments–also for the heads up on the broken link. It should be fixed now.

    You’re right that most of these things are very difficult to “prove.” All I can say is that experience and experiment share the same root, and I encourage you to keep experimenting. For the record, I used to be one of the BIGGEST skeptics, despite having a very in-tune and intuitive mindset. For me, a brain injury worked wonders in knocking out the rational side long enough for me to have so many mystical and connected experiences that I could no longer deny their existence (at least in my own life) even after my rational side returned in full. (And it did return; I have the objective tests to “prove” it left and then returned.)

    Yes, you’re absolutely right that “history is littered with the remains of those who thought that this was the end times, or the dawn of a new era. It’s just the way people think. A certain segment ALWAYS thinks this is it. This is the great prophecy, and it NEVER has been, so why would today be suddenly different?”

    Good, completely valid question! Just for clarity, I’m not saying this is the end. I don’t have that sense at all. Sometimes things flip, though. Sometimes your whole perspective and life alter in an instant. Again, head injuries work wonders. They leave survivors indelibly marked with just how fleeting and alterable our “realities” actually are, although such shifts can come from anything that affects your physical vision to such a degree that your world LOOKs different. After awhile, it BECOMES so, and this occurs even on the physical level. Your body, the way you navigate life, your ability to handle stress or multi-task, your personality: all of these things shift when your vision changes. Again, there are documented studies and “proof” of these sorts of changes, along with measurements of things like visual field, binocular function, nistagmus, etc.

    That’s another post because it’s an area I needed to study, practice and experience in order to get my vision corrected, but I actually have clients whose physical vision has shifted to the point where they no longer need glasses, without doing anything but shifting their mental/emotional/spiritual outlook; similarly, I’ve known people’s worldviews to change due to physical changes in their eyesight. I don’t profess to have a solid explanation for exactly why that occurs, but it does, and people have had the tests, etc. to “prove” it. All of which is a long way of saying that just because something has “always” been a certain way, does not guarantee it will always stay the same. Our sense of reality is WAY more vulnerable than most people believe.

    Here’s a line from page 220 of Daniel Pinchbeck’s book, 2012. (I was reading it as research for my novel.) Pinchbeck’s talking about Walter Benjamin and this recurring idea of a redemption that never happens:

    “History, perhaps, is not just a deterministic accident, but a loom of resonance, a sorrowing dreamsong, a chant calling us into awakening. ‘The past carries with it a temporal index by which it is referred to redemption,’ wrote Benjamin, who believed that every generation was endowed with a ‘WEAK Messianic power, a power to which the past has a claim.’ The time has always been ‘ not yet’– but that does not mean the time is never. It is not — is it?– inconceivable that a day might arrive when the time is now.”

    I wish you well on your journey, wherever it takes you, and hope our paths meet again. Peace, Laura

    I am an animal communicator and I can promise anyone that all creatures do have a conscious awareness.

    It is the ego that has man believe that he is greater than our wonderful friends.

    Your words are so beautiful. I talk to people who aren’t “there” all the time, and even those who aren’t actually “here” any more. It’s good that we can choose who to talk to, whenever we want. And the more we silence ourselves in the non-talking time, the more we hear back. Either those without voices in their heads are a bit bonkers, or they haven’t caught up yet… Love x

    I’ve never done this before… smile! Very interesting. I am a mother of an intuitive little boy who finds communicating with speech quite bothersome (don’t get me wrong he’s quite good at voicing his intent as well… smile)… I just think he figures it’s ineffective. He uses telepathy at a much higher level than I. I get frustrated with myself when I am not able to communicate at that level with the same ease as him. I do believe that the world is ending as we know it. It does appear that human and animals alike (or maybe it’s just us humans getting our egos out of the way) are becoming more sensative to vibrations around and becoming more in-tune to things beyond what our human eyes can see! Of course, I realize from reading everyone’s comments you are all much more experienced at this sort of thing than I. I do think that the idea of telepathy is frightening for our human egos as you mentioned… there is then no where to “hide”… as mentioned above all your deepest thoughts would be exposed! But then , if such were the case, wouldn’t that make us all much more honest and loving with each other and our animal friends here on earth and else where? It’s rather exciting when you think about it…. !!!

  17. Really enjoyed stumbling upon this reading very interestin particularly like the response to the person who felt everything in life is rational or set in stone, in my view that seems like fear. that is nothing to be frightened of rather embraced and dissolved. Of course we can all hang on to old ideas for dear life if we wish but it is so much nicer to go with the flow. In going with the flow I retain my own ideas also nourishing my soul. As i am always learning every minute of my life.

    from what I’ve experienced. telepathy is a form of communication not a form of mind reading.. and what telepaths hear is what you were about to say anyway. and was queued to the very front of your consciousness not your inner intentions.. not even your subconscious- sure they can read your facial expressions way better than most but that isn’t a definite intention revealer. you still have your privacy. people are all too paranoid about something they do not understand and do not try hard enough to understand or explore. only time I’ve ever heard anything from someone is if they were thinking of saying it .. and not all the time jsut occasionally say if I ask them what was that word or who was that person or what was his/her name? then the name etc pops into my head out of the blue then they say it just as I was about to say I remembered never mind.

  20. […] The other day another Abraham quote jumped out at me: “There is a bery big vibrational difference in your thoughts of appreciation of your mate, and in your thoughts of what you would like to be different about your mate. and your relationship with your mate, without exception, reflects the preponderance of your thoughts. For, while you may not have done it consciously, you have literally thought your relationship into being.” Extrapolating from this, we have, collectively, over millenia, created all the active relationships on this planet — including power struggles with the Council on Foreign Relations, New World Order and whatever other ways these manifest. Sobering, yes. But also POWERFUL. […]

    I am sure you will not read this, but for what it is worth, at one point in my life I didn’t believe in God. Naturally, I am a very spiritual, but no matter how much I prayed for guidance in the path I should choose none never came. Talking to angels the only answer I received was “soon.”

    When nothing materialized my faith fizzled out. I became distant to even these I loved while trying to be independent. Looking back I realize that the person I was wasn’t me. I was ill, and had been for a long time. Angels were not the only thing that had visited me. Some were quite bad.

    It would be easy to say that the whole experience was crazy, that I was not talking to angels, but delusions. I was mentally ill after all.

    Then in my height illness all reality changed. As Laura has similarly experienced, I discovered how thin reality really is. Slowly, I returned to my old self.

    Then the icing appeared on the cake. The angel who asked me to guess his name so many years ago (I said Raphael) turned out matching other people descriptions of Raphael. I wasn’t completely insane.
